Using Agrolab (Delaware) for my Maryland soil. Their $20 test includes all macro- and micro-nutrients, similar to Spectrum Analytic’s T3 level. Found AMS now at Newsom but check out Farmers Coop in Frederick Md.

Cam, Newsom now has Ammonium Sulfate again. I found a lot of agronomic fertilizer at Farmer’s Coop in 50# bags at very resealable prices.. including AMS. Mostly straight fertilizer ( not slow release) Gerry

I watched that also. Yep, very interesting positions. There is more than one way to do lawncare. I believe in having the data to assure my decisions are correct. I do agree that you probably won't see much change year over year which is why soil testing is good for 3-5 years. I believe the cost/effort of a soil test is a small price to pay to help "resolve a turfgrass problem" if it arises during the season. I understand and respect his positions.

The KBG does well. It stays a little greener than the fescue this time of year. I used the Mountain View Seed 365SS from Newsom when I overseeded last fall with the TTTF also.

Good info here Cam. So I never did a split pre-emergent app before and sounds like a good strategy. Should the 2 apps be put down at 1/2 the label rate. Wanted to apply this season when soil temp gets just over 50 and then again when crosses 70.

So typically our area we want about 6 months of coverage before overseeding time (Mar-Aug). I base my amounts on the duration of coverage that I need to have. My first app is a shorter duration (about 2-3 months) then my second app is the remainder of duration I need (3-4 months). Duration is dependent on weather of course but this is my approach. This year Im cutting down the total amount that I'm applying to what I explained above. Previously, I had the same split app approach but I would apply at a higher rate, not exceeding the total yearly rate.

Not really. Make sure your ground is not frozen to get proper depth for your sample and that you have not fertilized in the past 45-60 days. Which most people haven't at this point in the season.

I installed a new lawn this past fall... and I think that I'm going to skip the pre emergent step this spring, what are your thoughts on that idea . I think that o will deal with the weeds as I see them in the lawn this growing season.just curious on your thoughts. Thanks for the video and take care.

You could do that and deal with weed post emergent. I do not have a problem with using a pre-emergent the following spring on cool season grass. I use lower rates and use Prodiamine over Dithioypr. I've done it on every renovation that I have ever done. They continue to grow and establish just fine through the spring and summer.

You should skip the pre-emergent due to the fact that you dormant seeded. That seed will not establish if you apply a pre-emergent this spring when it germinates.

Is it possible to damage the irrigation system using the soil probes while taking the samples?

Its possible but highly unlikely. Depending on your local irrigation laws, most lines should be deeper than you are probing for a soil sample. You only need to probe about 4" deep for a soil sample. If you do happen to damage your irrigation soil testing, don't bother playing the lottery anytime soon...luck is not on your side 🤣.

Cam! I think I messed up! I had a great fall renovation last fall but the weather has been so crazy this winter with the up and down temps that I’m now seeing weeds growing in spots. Can I save my lawn or did I mess up not putting out prenemergent? I didn’t expect to be putting it out on February

Seeing weeds this time of year is not unusual especially with the warmer winter we had. You are probably seeing some winter annual weeds poping up. You can put down a post emergent herbicide with your pre-emergent application. Thats a benefit of spraying your pre-emergent. You will be fine just get that application down.

@@TriniDB I have not used that combo before so I recommend doing a jar test first just to make sure before you mix up a full batch. Take a quart jar add water and the proportions of each product and mix. It shouldn't have any clumping or gelling. You can not apply fertilizer until March first in Maryland also make sure that your lawn is starting to green up.

There are benefits to knowing that data for things that you could even cut out or adjust in your current program to save on some money or stop putting down unnecessary/excess nutrients. Hey, its your lawn your approach but thats not the way I operate. Make sure you are following the laws of your state with your applications and I hope things continue to work out for you.

@@russell311000 I appreciate the recognition on the content 🙏🏾. You just stated one of the reasons why you should get a soil test, you only need one every 3-5 yrs. I don't know what your current program is but if you did a soil test and find out that you have sufficient P and K nutrients in your soil. You could run a N only program which could be one of the cheapest programs to have! Again, I don't know what your current program is, you may be doing that already.
