Funny thing, I've been getting tatted for about 25 years. I cannot remember anyone ever giving me any of this advice (eating a good meal, getting enough sleep, etc.). Through the years, I pretty much figured out some do's and don't's, just by trial and error. I appreciate the fact that you're advising people who may not know! What a great upload dude!!!

I had my first tattoo, which is the start of a sleeve, two weeks ago and I didn't really bring anything with me other than headphones and a chocolate bar. I ate a huge breakfast an hour before my appointment and really I was full for the entire tattoo. I went into the tattoo not knowing what my pain tolerance was and the tattoo was from my elbow to the top of my shoulder. Honestly it was no where near as bad as I thought it was going to be. The only painful part was close to the armpit. I never needed my chocolate bar or my headphones. I kinda just sat there, talked with the artist a few times and mostly watched the other artist that did three tattoos that day. The day just flew by even without any entertainment (I only checked my phone when we took a break). My artist ended up saying that was the best anyone has sat for their first tattoo in 10 years for her, so that was pretty cool.

that area of the body is one of the easiest places get tattooed, but even then it's hard to sit for an all day session. you'll prolly end up being heavily tattooed lol this is how it starts

I just got my first one 4/21/2024 and I was able to sit there and just listen to music and stayed relaxed and I actually kinda liked how it felt the artist and my mom thought I was fucking crazy and also thought it was pretty funny too and we only had to take 1 small break for me to go to the restroom and he got it done pretty fast and it goes from the beginning of my right shoulder and just before my elbow

The entertainment factor is where I can struggle sometimes. Don't want to be rude to the artist by not talking or joking around with them but when getting work done I like to get my headphones in and get into my zone. It's nothing against the artist just my way of getting myself comfortable.
@JamesWithee
@JamesWithee 4 жыл бұрын
Ryan nothing wrong with that. Being able to listen to loud music in your headphones probably helps with the pain too. A couple of people have asked me if they can wear headphones. I don’t take it personally and mostly assume that they are either in pain and can’t talk at the same time or don’t like hip hop, which is mostly what I have playing when I work

Oh how I wish all clients were like you guys.. it's,so off off putting and distracting when clients keep talking, especially if they're someone who talks with their hands (hand movement expression alongside speach).. I had a guy the other day where I kept stating how important it was that he remain still, especially when I'm trying to execute straight clean lines.. he managed about a minute, at best.. Some people talk out of nervousness I find.. it doesn't matter how much you try to set a relaxing atmosphere.. it's a deeper issue than ambient music But.. all in all what a fantastic job we tattooists have hey.. I love it

I brought a nalgene water bottle to my first tattoo session, but when I got there I realized I was gonna be tattooed laying down on my stomach. Luckily my friend who accompanied me had a water bottle ready for me that I could drink from while laying down (like a hamster...lol). It's good to bring a friend who is tattooed and can think of the little things that can make your experience better.

I'm so glad I have a great tattoo artist. He knows I can't sit long due to my bone cancer that I fought for 3 years. I told him my story and he took me in like a long lost family member. He keeps my appt times small in 3 hr range. I also had to wait a year after my chemo treatments and other things. He also let's me get up because he knows my bones are still healing and I can't sit long. I can lay down for a longer period but be knows I've had a partial hip replacement from the cancer so I can only lay one way. He's the freaking best but I also pay him more because of the time. He of course never asked but anyone willing to give me my sleeve and jump through every hoop to make that dream come true will get as much over as I can afford.

It's so interesting to hear the experiences of tattoo artists. The artist who did my second tattoo has a hardcore "no friends/other people" policy due to some of the issues you mentioned. I completely get that - when I get a new piece, I want my artist to be as comfortable and happy as possible so we're both pleased with the result.
@JamesWithee
@JamesWithee 4 жыл бұрын
alleycatfire yah some artists are definitely more strict on it than others. There are a lot of reasons we don’t prefer a lot of company besides what I mentioned in the video. It can become a circus real quick if there are several friends accompanying the client
@aquana
@aquana 4 жыл бұрын
@@JamesWithee It's weird because my tattoo artist seems to enjoy having company while working - me on the other hand, I absolutely *hate* it when I'm expected to talk while being tattooed. Like... man, you're hitting my ribs with what feels like a jackhammer, I just want to focus on getting through it, I don't want chitchat!
@JamesWithee
@JamesWithee 4 жыл бұрын
aquana your artist could be pretending because they don’t want to be rude or because your friends are potential clients and they need more business. Or maybe they just genuinely don’t mind. Everyone’s different but in general what I said is very true. And yeah I can understand not wanting to talk if it’s on the ribs. Talking could make u move more too cuz you’d be breathing less steadily

@@JamesWithee Ah sorry for replying so much, the stuff you say is really interesting :) I don't really bring friends but sometimes people stand around to chitchat and he genuinely seems to enjoy it! I dont recommend carb heavy meals, you will crash and then get hungrier from the insulin spike rebound. (Btw, sugar is a carbohydrate). A better way to stay full would be something high in protein, fat, and fiber. So for example, a big steak, plenty of cooked vegetables, and maybe some whole grains like some quinoa or blue corn. Thanks for the video btw, good tips for getting tattooed

One thing I wish was more common was the transparency in prices and time for different tattoos. Instagram is great for finding artists, but I wish I knew how much each piece costs and/or how long it took. I hate reaching out to artists and not knowing the price ahead of time. Idk maybe it’s just me, but even if I have money I would like to know so I don’t waste my and the artist’s time.
@JamesWithee

i understand your frustration. to message an artist and have no idea if you can even afford to get tattooed by them is a waste of time for both of you if the rate isn't right. it's hard to say how much someone charges just from their ig cuz there are so many factors at play. i have a whole video about how an individual artist determines his/her price. check that one out and it'll prolly help, in combination with your experience after inquiring with several artists of differing skill levels in your area.

At around the 23 minute mark: my most current artist free hands everything so we decide together what would look good while he sets his station up and I actually like it better that way. We have a dialogue about it and we must be on the same mind wavelength because our ideas always line up so perfectly. Then he pulls out some reference art books (I’m doing a nature “life comes from death” sleeve on my right arm and he is using native WA state plants / flowers for it) and goes to town with sharpies on my arm (he is like an insanely talented tattoo wizard). I’m pretty sure I’m going to be sticking with him for a while because I really do enjoy being involved in the design process and I’ve never had an artist free hand anything on me. He’s also the owner of the shop I go to so we have a private office away from the hustle and bustle of the shop so yeah. Very relaxing to be tattooed by him. I am sticking with him for a while.

Great advice to review before any session. No matter how used to being tattooed one is, preparing appropriately is important. I appreciate your time and honesty. Wake care, be well, and many blessings. 👩‍🎨🎨🖌🌺🍀🦓🌈 Liz in CA

You're so right! Always good to get those reminders! I'm heavily tattooed and it's easy to get kinda lazy about preparing. I have had a few surprises though 😂 My thigh caught me all the way off guard. You just never really know when your soul will try to leave your body so it's best to be rested up and have a full stomach 😂

bassguitar1919 Unfortunately, my first session was postponed because of the quarantine that is happening right now so I am still waiting to get my tattoo. I decided to go big and get a sleeve on my right arm. The entire theme of my tattoo is The Day of Dead, in color and the style I chose was traditional. Since I haven’t gotten my tattoo yet all I can say is take your time and look at different artists and find someone that does your style. A tattoo is a piece of art so be willing to pay a little more for it. Good luck.

I'm curious about tattooeing experience when a tattoo artist is getting a tattoo- Do you ever watch how it's done even when you yourself have done it so many times? Like, technique or the care before and stuff like this? Or do you just sit there and talk? And these are very good videos as I'm soon going to my very first consultation and I'm kinda nervous person :D
@JamesWithee
@JamesWithee 4 жыл бұрын
Lucia Szocsova good tattooers watch other artists tattoo as much as possible because it helps us learn. So I try to watch if possible while I’m getting work done. Gotta be careful with watching during a session though because it’s easy to move more if I look away abruptly

Amazing tips brotha. Just had an appointment yesterday and went in on no food that day. Was only 3 hours but didn't think much of it. Also, cool point about shaving. I shaved for mine in consideration for the Artist but I used a buzzer so I pretty much just took a majority of the hair off so it's not so nasty for them lol

Hey I was wondering if you could do a video on touching up tattoos. Like making aged tattoos new again. Since I know all tattoos get a little or a lot blurry over a long period of time, I wanted to know the different outcomes of going back and getting it touched up. If you have had experience with that or generally know of it. It doesn’t have to be an entire video on it because I don’t know how much you could possibly go over. I’m into really detailed and realistic tattoos and I wanna know for the long run is it worth it if there’s a chance to “make it new” again.

Good information. Especially with the identification, ive worked at a couple shops and u would be surprised at the amount of potential customers that came through and after going through the process and then they dont have i.d and hes right about licensed shops having to send business away because of that, i seen people put all cash on counter , like thousands, and still get denied over i.d

Could you make a video for people like me who are watching all your videos researching for their first tattoo and are just about to book an appointment having found an artist with a very basic breakdown of the equipment you use and the needles and the type of ink you use and how are you know how deep to inject so A totally basic video as your presentation style would be perfect for this. I.e. clear

the part about the shaving was very helpful for me. i had an artist shave me terribly once for a neck tattoo then put deodorant over it, and it honestly hurt way more than the tattoo itself.

Velo damn that sucks. We fuck up and cut ppl every once in a while, especially in the beginning. Deodorant for a stencil isn’t very common anymore but used to be the go to for a lot of tattooers. Surprised your artist used that
