I was thinking about taking up woodworking, only using hand tools. After watching this I have reservations.

Excellent tutorial! After watching, I did realize that I knew what needed to be done, but didn’t know the correct order it needed to be done in. Thanks for going into such detail! Super helpful!

Great follow on video. It’s good to see you describe the reasons both why and how things are done. Thinking about the temperatures, originally thought about converting garage into a workshop. In Aquitaine, temps get into mid / upper 30’s through summer so decided to convert part of the cellar instead.

Great video,John. Good presentation. First video I’ve seen with minimum hand tools for squaring stock…and I have all the tools except I use a #5-1/2 jack plane.

How long did it take? My first 500mm board took me around 5 hours. Second one bit faster, will probably become quicker as I get experienced

Question for ya John, what finish did you use on your bench? Have a enough kiln dried beech to make the top and some pine for the legs etc but it will be in a very old cavity block shed with a tin roof so humidity etc is a factor here in Ireland

Boiled Linseed oil, does the job easy to apply and you can apply another coat whenever you need.

What degree micro bevel did you use in the low angle jack. And did you use different bevels for different jobs.
@JohnMcGrathManInShed
@JohnMcGrathManInShed 4 жыл бұрын

Jesus John..... you need to rehydrate 😓. That looked like hard work. I would have folded and hit the thicknesser as soon as possible.... but that's not the point 🤔. Looks like I need to get myself a decent Jack plane and get shaving. A great way to appreceated your stock before you turn it in to "a thing". Keep up the great content 😁👍.
