Great video, good job. When I'm using a vacuum sealer on moist products, I will fold a clean paper towel into a thin strip then place in the bag edge to edge crossways. The towel will suck up any moister as it is being vacuumed keeping the moister off the seal. Always a good idea to double seal regardless.

Tip for moist foods, lay out on a sheet with wax paper and put in freezer for 30 minutes to an hour. Take it out put in sealer bags and vacuum seal.

Good job Sherlock. Get all the way up to the important part about pressure and you neglect to say WHAT THE PRESSURE IS! TOO BLURRY TO SEE EVEN SCREEN SHOTTED! Waste of time without this vital info.😢 No subscribe and no thumbs up.

I don't do vinegar on the rims of my jars. Paper towel or linen cloth and hot water works fine. This vinegar thing is something new to us old canners lol

Haha yes, water works great. I tend to reach for the vinegar when I feel like I need to cut through oil. I never have sealing problems with it. A lot of things I do just use water though.

Tessa, question, we take crab all the time freediving, but it is rock crab not dungie. We have chickens too. Any issues with the crop being damaged from the shells? Or in your experience do the chickens clean only shells and leave them? If so then what do you do about the shells AKA raccoon attractants?

I’ve never had an issue with crop damage from the crab shells, nope! If you think about it, oyster shell is probably even harder than crab shell. Their crops and gizzards are tough!

I am not a fan of canning with lemon or vinegar in foods that are not supposed to taste like that, and what ever it is will taste like lemon.

Hi Teresa! That’s how I always eat my crab, dipped in hot lemon butter 😋. I love the lemon taste in my crab. Additionally, some acidity is required to can crab. I believe you can use citric acid as well but I’m not a huge fan of how commercial citric acid is produced. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for sharing your bounty through this video. However, please consider the following: It's great for you that you were lucky enough to catch 40 crabs, and that you know how to preserve the meat after eating some and sharing with family and friends so it doesn't go to waste. However, you should take into consideration what could happen if your luck continues. While it may seem lucky now, continued crabbing like that could result in the crab population dying out. Overfishing or overhunting an area can drive the population of a target animal's numbers down so far that they can't breed fast enough to recover. Like what happened with the dodo bird, the carrier pigeon, the Tasmanian tiger, and so many more animals. If that happens, you'll eventually have no more crab to catch. As a homesteader, you are surely aware of conserving wildlife so that there will always be useful numbers of plant and animal resources for you and your family to draw upon both now and in the future. I know that 40 crabs aren't really that much compared to commercial crabbing boats, but the above thoughts occurred to me as I watched your video. This is not meant to be a criticism or scolding, just a reminder. Again, thank you for sharing your bounty through this video. I wish you all the best and continued success in your homesteading endeavors. 👍

@@MrGoathouse Yep. I'm definitely a nerd. But I'm also into homesteading, too. Responsible homesteaders know to be careful with their fishing, hunting, and foraging. If they aren't careful, they'll eventually have to give up a big part of being a homesteader because they'll have stripped the area in which they live of resources. If they do that, they might have to purchase food that they could have gotten for free. Granted, homesteaders grow a lot of their food (fruit, vegetables, farm animals), but they supplement that food with what they fish, hunt, and forage. What happens if a homesteader has a bad year (or even a couple of bad years) with his crops and animals? He'll become even more dependent on the resources in his area. But if those resources have been depleted because of his foolish carelessness... He might have to give up on his dream of being a homesteader. So smart homesteaders manage their area responsibly.

Hi Jim, Thanks for watching another one. I don't think anyone cares more about local resources than locals who dearly cherish those resources. There are a plethora of regulations in place to ensure the continued productivity of the dungeness population. They drop 'test pots' to check and see what the crab situation looks like before they even open crab season. There are limits, commercial season doesn't even open for a while after sport opens and, yes, my 40 crab is measly compared to commercial fishing or even some other sport fisherman who have gone more than I have. But, that's fine, the populations are more than healthy enough to sustain that. We threw back probably 3x what we brought home. Probably 2/3 of those were because they were under 5 3/4 inches and the other 1/3 was because we had even bigger ones. Trust me, the crab are doing just fine. Those who do fish, hunt or forage are far more intimately aware of the condition and health of those local resources than those who don't. As Steven Rinella said, "I don't think anyone loves deer as much as deer hunters.". I feel that sentiment is 100% true.

Please, realize and trust that someone with Tessa obvious experience and professional level information is conscientious enough to not need the 3rd grade lecture. The video was incredibly well done, and nothing was wasted. No need to preach about the environment to homesteaders. Head on down to Seattle and preach it to the open drug markets and superfund sites they create with their needles and meth. There's a windmill for you to charge.
