How to preserve our past

Video description: Cleaning and conservation of antique wood planes.
This video shows the process of cleaning and preserving antique wood planes.
The first step is to thoroughly clean the planers of dirt and dust. This is done using fine sandpaper and a sanding sponge that does not damage the wood.
The next step is the treatment of parts attacked by wood-damaging insects using microwaves or chemical preparations against wood-damaging insects. This is followed by infusing with linseed oil and coating with beeswax to protect them from further damage and deterioration.
After cleaning and conservation, the planes are ready to be displayed in a museum, where they will be open to the public and serve as a display of historic woodworking tools.
This video is a useful resource for anyone interested in antique woodworking tools and their preservation.

beautiful job restoring these wonderful old molding planes - they’re good for another hundred years now. i love that you don’t try to make things look brand new again, as many restorers do, but rather honour the history of the tools and machinery. my grandfather had a cool old molding plane with interchangeable sole plates and blades, so you could use the same body to make numerous different profiles

I have been many old buildings and lived in many old homes that have moldings made from planes like these and I never knew how they were made. I thought it was section by section. Wonderful restoration! Tools of the trade get a new life! When I see old tools like these I have to think about what all they have created , what the master wood worker felt as he made things, the hours spent, the pride that went into his work and the trust he put into his tools. There is a better way to clean up old moulding planes, scrubbing with a mix of boiled linseed oil and turpentine, using a medium grade wire wool. It doesn’t remove the patina or round off the profile the way sanding does. Nice to see old tools restored 👍

Wow! It's amazing what treasures are still out there. Thank you for restoring this item. As I read in other comments this was special for a customer but I can't imagine how you felt to have the privilege of restoring it. It's a weighty responsibility but makes you feel so good when you've been able to accomplish it. Am I right in thinking each planer had a representation of the design it made both on the bottom and on the side? Makes me wonder what the original tools looked like.
