Interesting that you reference clay as a uniform material. Around here expansive clay is a big cause of floor slabs cracking - the clay under the edges of the slab is exposed to much more wetting and drying than the middle of the slab, which just tends to slowly dry out over time. When the clay under the edges wets and expands, but the middle is still dry, that's prime conditions for cracking. If it doesn't go the first time, the process of the edges lifting and dropping according to soil moisture changes will crack it eventually.
