In this video I will be talking about some common reason as to why people early extend in the downswing and what you can do to prevent this from happening.
Many people are not aware that this can be caused by different body parts besides the hips and that there are multiple ways to prevent this from happening. If you know that you are struggling with this issue then perhaps some of the ideas in this video can help you.

I need that Titleist bag asap! Jonathan is the best instructor on KZbin. I've worked with enough coaches for 100 people from my days as a junior to my time playing for Clemson University. I'm here to tell you this dude is the only KZbinr you need. There is about 5-10 swing instructors I have seen on KZbin teaching correctly.

That is one of the best lessons on early extension because you go into the reasons why we do it and not just modify swing , this will be very helpful as I am a notorious early extender , thank you

You Sir are a genius , finally after one and a half years of constantly topping my driver today I got all my shots off . So simple all in the set up and little to no swing thoughts . I am most thankful for this lesson , the first pro who has sorted it .

Please do a video on weight shift during the transition, which actually starts during the backswing, before the backswing is even finished. Hard concept. Most people complete backswing and THEN start weight shift, which is too late!

That movement "against the wall" was really clear to see on Tiger's swing. Now I know why 👌 He was obsessed on keeping his butt against the wall in order to avoid early extension.

Jonathon, some people say that early extension is not a root problem but actually a needed cure for golfers with an early release so they don’t hit the ball fat. Could you do a video on this or comment on it? Thanks

When I keep my butt back, I can't get any forward shift. Weight gets on my heels and I can't shift forward.

I am also doing early extension perhaps because of two reasons, one is more focusing on my swing and secondly a fear of duffing..

What do you think about Collin Morikawa’s swing? His leg and knee kicks forward towards the ball while still staying in posture.
@alexandermayer2026

Love your stuff. This one is a bit confusing. With all the discussion of ground force and with the undeniably greatest source of power being leg extension, it seems the modern swing almost appears to be a jump. I guess Lexi Thompson would be the best example of this. The old school concept of bowing down to the ball seems to have disappeared. Screwing yourself into the ground and using leg force downwards to undo it would be probably the best description of what I thought makes sense. Tiger's blowing out his knee with hyper-extension is another, probably bad, example. In doing this, I definitely have the sense that I am moving upwards away from the ball. Please contrast early extension with Lexi's move. Thanks.
@konnorkanetani6414
@konnorkanetani6414 2 жыл бұрын
I think if you watch a slow mo of Lexi's swing you'll see her hips have already rotated and cleared before her 'jumping' motion to generate power. In the case of early extension it seems that the player 'humps' the ball before/during the rotation causing mishits, duffs, etc.
@alexandermayer2026

@@konnorkanetani6414 interesting comment but pretty much impossible physically. Screw your self into the ground loaded into your right side. Now try to clear your hips without pushing down on the ground, which is the mechanism that clears the hips. I teach tennis and the same concept holds.
@sonnyspade1
@sonnyspade1 2 жыл бұрын
In order to launch off the ground well you need to load into the ground first. For example, you jump a lot higher when you crouch first as opposed to from a standing position. Early extenders never load down into the ground. So you are correct, ground forces = speed, but if you've extended from the transition, you have nothing left to launch with into and through impact.

I worry that by driving my butt, back into the imaginary wall..( set up showing the noodle at 6:05 ) I will begin to hit fat shots, or too much of the ground with my irons.....thanks

Hey, thanks for the video. Can I just ask - in your "actual" golf shot around 7:45 - you don't seem to be hitting that noodle when you push your butt back. In that pump drill you illustrated, you do, but then in the actual shot, I don't see you pushing back towards the noodle. How come?
@CThienV
@CThienV 10 күн бұрын
Maybe because it's a drill that exxagerates the technique for those who don't push back at all.

Question: regarding a good setup position … Should the clubhead be FLAT on the ground at setup? (heel & toe) It seems during the swing, because of centrifugal force, at impact the club shaft bends down a bit and therefore the toe of the club also bends down (true or false?) So, at setup, should the toe of the clubhead be slightly up off the ground? I add least wondered about this 🤔
@JKMGolf
@JKMGolf 2 жыл бұрын
the club head does not need to be flat on the ground at address but it is important at impact
@beakie27
@beakie27 2 жыл бұрын
@@JKMGolf but if you do not have a club head flat at address, wouldn't it come down not flat at impact too? if you flatten it during impact, wouldn't that mean you are messing around with your wrist angle just before impact?
