Great video ,am watching from south Sudan so I will never have this problem but it was great knowledge to learn nevertheless especially with cooling water for central hvac systems

I just got two more of my water supply lines to a sink switched out for PEX. Going to get my washer supply lines replaced with PEX below the floor into the kitchen, to avoid freezing.

I actually have to leave my kitchen sink cabinet open all the time. I never realized the main shutoff was under there next to the hose bib. The old owners put insulation ON THE INSIDE of the pipes, trapping it against the exterior block wall with the hole from the exterior bib. I got VERY VERY lucky that my main didn't actually split. I caught it probably moments before it was going to break that day. It was -64F out that week and I woke up and went to get a glass of water and nothing came out of my sink. I happened to trace it back and see it went behind the insulation. Pulled the insulation and buried down behind the cabinet was my main. Needless to say, I repositioned all that insulation BEHIND the pipes, isolating it from the outside wall. I also packed that hole from the outside the bib went through. I honestly wasn't surprised. This house used to actually be an old pipefitting shop (house over storefront antique design from almost 100 years ago) not a residential space and the previous owner made pretty much nothing but questionable decisions (like the number of windows he walled over but didn't bother sealing, after 20 years, so much moisture behind those walls).

I live where it really gets cold 0-10F for a whole month, alll exterior water pipes are buried at least 6ft or below the frost line. Water meters are inside the house so there is no exterior box to freeze, and the main shutoff requires a tool with an 8 foot shaft to furn it off or on. Then there will be no need to worry if the exterior pipes will freeze.
@aurumdream969315 күн бұрын
If the exterior pipes freeze, there is no water coming in, then the standing water in the pipes will freeze up eventually.
@ecybernard-com15 күн бұрын
@aurumdream9693 look up the frost line concept, below the frost line the heat from the Earth's mantle will prevent ground below the frost line from freezing ever. Depending on where you live the frost line maybe shallower or deeper

Lived in Alaska for a little over three years and Tennessee most of my life. There was about two weeks in the winter where AK was 32 to 49 F degrees and TN was -1 to 20 F. Prepare for the worst no matter where you are. Prepare and spend a little more $ now to save that chedda spent on the emergency situation.

We're in the process of getting our house ready to sell in Ohio have the gas off ..water is shut off at the main(not at the road) ..I was thinking about opening the lowest point faucet and letting all water drain out of the lines..do you think that will be sufficient till we can get the home sold? ....the lowest line is in basement Hot/cold for a washer probably..there are washer hose lines attached to the spigots dropped into the sump basin.. Hot water heater is still on(120 gal electric)

Is this the same thing for shared well water? I live in a mobile home.

NO, Heating tape would not work when your house lost power, particularly for several days during the hard freeze like 4 years ago in S Texas.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and did you forget last year in Texas? Y'all got a deep freeze hittin ya, and there were a lot of burst pipes. View insulating your pipes as a way to save money on energy. Your water will stay cooler and warmer depending on which temperature you use
