I just retired from a career that started as a freelance illustrator and ended in numerous areas in the advertising/marketing industry. Even though I was an illustration major in college, I would seriously advise budding artists to be business majors and take art classes along the way. Your advice is spot on! In my retirement I’m getting back to non commercial art and will be using your ideas to market my work. My little piece of advice for artists new to this is to paint more so that the sheer volume keeps you from falling in love with your own creations.

my sister was like that. She was an amazing artist but couldn't part with anything! She was in a financial pickle, and I bailed her out, but she insisted she paint me something to pay for it. She did! then later asked for the painting back because she missed it, lol. Her house was completely covered with her paintings when she passed, and all were just amazing. She just couldn't part with them! Her ex got them all, including the one she had painted for me.

To be honest your success is all because of that positive karma you build for yourself, you give so much that other artists would be too selfish to do (as myself, maybe it's because I'm young and still have a lot to learn), you inspire so much, you reply every time, you radiate positivity and for just the few weeks that I've been following you I feel so inspired, motivated and grateful that I've stumbled upon such an amazing human. The square inch method works only if you paint more or less same sizes. If you offer different size ranges, this method will not do justice to your smaller work. For a miniature of let's say 8x8in you would charge just 32 bucks. Not every smaller work is done faster than a bigger canvas. So, you won't be willing to use this square inch method. Way more consistent and with a lesser spread is using the perimeter (or just length+width) and a multiplier (factor), which you adjust as your prices grow. For example, your 30x30in x factor 7,5 = 450 USD, and a 8x8in painting with the factor 7,5 would cost (8+8)x7,5= 120 USD, which is a more coherent and consistent way to reflect your sizes.
@lorimirabelliabstractartist3 жыл бұрын
My price per inch for smaller pieces is higher...you are absolutely correct that keeping it consistent doesn't translate. I forgot to mention that in the video. and........then ready the rest of your message my eyes glazed over with the math 🥰😊😂😂😂

Good advice. I have been a professional artist for a long time but just entering the painting arena, not sure why but it called. I know I will have to start from a humble place, this is new to me. The exciting part is knowing I will grow and there is so much to learn. I love the learning part. I sadly have seen so many "artists" over the years get excited about the money and think they can slap a fat price tag on a piece of art and that is what will make it good art. So many people thinking that this is all some kind of game you just have to find you way into. It can be but an artists doesn't paint for money, they make art because they can not, not make art. It is a part of who we are and we do it even if money doesn't follow. Business sadly is a part of the process, and as an artists you have to find a way to get comfortable with it.

I want to add that if you are curious you can always keep a journal, it could be as simple as a grocery bag and marker in your work space, list the project(s) you are working on and write down the hours or minutes you gave to that project from designing to shopping for paint. It doesn't have to be perfect but it gives you and idea of the time you have put into a piece of art. It doesn't have to affect your pricing but artists after they have finished are like women who have given birth, they get amnesia about the 9 months of growing a human and the hours and pain spent in labor, all they can see is the product of that work, nothing else. With a baby its unconditional, love. With a painting not always, and not so much. We sometimes have in inner critic who takes over and we can devalue that work. Reminding yourself about how much you put into creating sometimes helps keep you from undervaluing what you have made. Just a thought.

I am going to start on line with etsy. At 75 I don’t want to do shows. Your recommendation for for pricing by square inch is great. Another great point is not to price yourself out of the market and then trying a fire sale which will negatively hurt the people who bought from you at your original price. Your current prices are much higher than the 50 cent per inch. You obviously have earned that price point. Great advice.

Thank you so much for this insightful video. I'm a new gallerist and I struggle with a few of my artists that are not realistic about their price points. I will be sharing this video with them. My more successful artists follow the square inch rule and are priced fairly and their art sells. Our clientele notices and responds. What's very frustrating for myself as a gallerist, is trying to justify an artist's inflated price. Collectors know what to look for and ask questions such as, what publications are they in? Are they in any museums? Are they in any other galleries? Have they sold any work at auction? If an artist hasn't achieved any of those things, and they want say...$10.00 a sq inch, I cannot have them in my gallery because I cannot justify a good reason to the potential buyer. We have rent to pay so every inch of my wall space needs to be reserved for art that will sell and isn't overpriced. I've found that some artist's ego gets bruised when I bring this issue up to them, but at the same time, even they can't get a solid justification for their pricing.

I read a lot about square inch method but not much about how any other costs that should affect the end price. Framing for one. If an artist doesnt frame any works or if they could frame any size pianting the same way and could break that cost down by square inch maybe that could work. Professional picture framing is so varied by method and style that end pricing for for framed art could be hundreds of dollars different for two identical sized pieces. Also, if one doesn't do commission work you could price lower but if you are too low it will be hard to get enough compensation for the extra effort and demands of creating work for clients. And lastly what about any other costs of doing business, profit & living expenses, studio expenses, insurance, income taxes, and more? The fact is, if you are hobbyist then these may be out the window but if one really wants to be in business as an artist...paint and sell if you can make enough money but if one can't- one should find another line of work. I would rather not waste my time talent, and money creating a product I can't sell for the price I should get toake a good living.

most people artist start as hobbyist. Just like an athlete starts off running a race for their high school team. The more they work and dedicate time to their sport the further they will go. You don't just start off running a race in the olympics. It's the same with being an artist. You don't just start selling your stuff for $1000's of dollars...you have to work up to that. So per square inch method im referring to here if for my style of painting. Unframed acrylic or oil on canvas. 😊

I have watched two of your videos, and appreciate your candor and nervousness! Being an musician and an artist I'll admit this whole online "pair of dimes" is a bit confusing. Self promotion can be a bit challenging. You lay out solid steps, thank you.

Thanks Lori! That was so helpful as I am now building my “body of work”...and you were the one, who just by saying “you need to have a body of work” has really gotten a fire going under my “beehind.” Yes, I’ve got things I can sell, but not enough...plus I’m going to be redoing/renaming my website. So pricing is something that I’m gonna be facing soon. I really appreciate the practical advice. Take care.👍🤩

You're right, I don't want to over price and then hurt sales so it's been an issue at times for me. Always good information. I appreciate you sharing what works for you.

When you talk about increments are you talking about a jump from say twenty-five cents to 50 cents or just a 10-cent increase at a time?

Blast it! I just took all my awards/ shows and articles off my website as I thought they were too much (I hear my mu saying 'don't get a big head young lady) lol. Over the 35 years I've been doing this they add up. I love your common sense approach and your normality. Thank you.

The arts is the profession where you get to share all of your achievements.😂 I would rather it be written on my website as I'm not one to speak of them in person.
