Hi Mrs Laura and Mr Arnie. Im sorry to bother you more, but thank you thank you THANK YOU for these videos!!! I don't think y'all know how SERIOUSLY GRATEFUL I am for these videos!!!!! I have been looking at my pictures of my cakes and re-pricing them the way you have taught and I could have charged at least $700 for some of them! I wish I could show you a picture of some just to get your opinions. The level of intricacy chart is ABSOLUTELY what I needed to understand how to charge! God bless you both for explaining this to us!!!! When I watch y'all's videos I tell my kids im taking my online class, lol, because I have learned so much and I even bought a notebook just for this series. I am also so grateful for the encouragement you put it me! You are so powerful and motivational! This sounds stupid, but I'm starting to tear up. You have given me so much courage and CONFIDENCE to charge correctly! I know my worth now and I give thanks to yall for that! Agaib, thank you thank you.

Love you guys so much! I've been taking all your pricing strategies and applying them. I have a few different recipes that I use so I've now priced them all out and have them all in charts, this way when someone orders from me and it's different flavors or different types of icing, I can just find them on the chart and easily quote. I can't wait to add all the decorations and all the 3D model decor. Thank you so much for all these videos!

Love the chemistry in you guys. I just took a basic baking course which I so love an i know there is much more to baking than just cake an frosting but my question is to launch yourself into this business do I need any insurance to assure clients don't come back to you for any issues? I am also a nurse an i think about allergies... thanks once again.
@krazykoolcakes2 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome Vivian! I've never purchased any cake business insurance. In the 16 years I've been in business I've never had a single person complain about an allergen or anything like that. The person ordering needs to make you aware of any allergies. That's their responsibility. Then at that point you decide if you want to take the order. I purposely don't do diabetic cakes, egg-green, gluten-free or any of those types of cakes in order to avoid those problems. I hope that helps and I hope your business is going well. God bless you! :)

Hi Laura and Arnie. Just to add to what you guys were saying about doing cakes and decorations for practice. I think if you say as a new or inexperienced cake artist, instead of charging less or underpaying yourself for "practice", you should get Styrofoam dummies and practice on. At least at the end you will have invested in your cake business as now you have a display cake to add to your portfolio. Thanks for the videos guys. Stay blessed

Another great video! I'm curious......do you usually pattern your cake decorations after pictures that clients bring you or that you find on-line, etc. or do you come up with the designs from your own imagination/creativity? If it's a combination of those things....which would you say you do the most?
@krazykoolcakes7 жыл бұрын
Thank you Joann! Usually the client knows which characters they want on the cake so I look up pictures online. I like to sculpt after the actual photos of the characters and not a photo of someone else's topper. As far as cakes, they usually have a photo, but I mostly redesign and make it my own as I don't like to replicate others' cakes. :)

Thank you soooo much for the advice and tips.. I needed to hear the validation that it is crucial to value your worth and artistic quality and detail.. People just don't get it.. Our work is an art and everyone has their own creative process and skill. I live in South Africa and customers more often than not supply me with images downloaded from Pinterest that come from famous international bakeries, and expect to pay the same prices as they would pay at the local supermarket... It is a challenge to get the client on board to pay true value for my work whilst trying to keep their budget in mind.. With that said, I have had a few projects where i'm given artistic freedom and received new orders based on that.. Blessings..

I'm sorry if I'm jumping ahead, I'm just excited with everything I'm learning from you both! I havnt even finished this video yet lol. I find out this weekend if I may be able to transition from my day job and home baker to a full time baker in a commercial kitchen, at what point would you make the decision to hire help, I have the fear of being unable to handle the work load alone, we'll with hubby as well. #scaredbutexcited 🤗
@krazykoolcakes7 жыл бұрын
Hi Tina! So happy you're excited about what you're learning! That's awesome! :) First of all, don't be afraid of not being able to handle it. You'll actually cause your own downfall by being afraid. So let's get rid of that before you even begin. Next, you definitely want to first do it on your own for a LONG time... Just you and your hubby. If you charge WELL for your work, you may not need to take so many orders that you both can't handle it. If you continue charging correctly for your work and you begin to get more work, then that's the point you'll want to look into hiring someone to help you. You'll be able to afford to pay them well and not have it hurt you financially. If you hire someone just to help you fulfill a bunch of orders that you're not charging correctly for, you'll very quickly realize you're in a downward spiral. I wish you and your business much success! :)

Y'all are so amazing I'm so grateful for these videos. They have taught me to be more confident and be able to not worry what people will say about my quotes to them. My questions is with other products how would you price them out such as cupcakes and cookies. Thank you again 🙂
@krazykoolcakes7 жыл бұрын
Hi Mercedes! Thank you so much for your kind words. Glad you are enjoying the videos. You would price them the same way. It's easy once you know what one hour of your time is worth. Just like we did in a previous video where we figure out what our "base price" is for a cake, you need to do the same for cupcakes for example. Figure out your out of pocket cost for a dozen cupcakes for example, and figure out the amount of time the cupcakes alone cost with a buttercream swirl for example. Then, calculate what you should be paying yourself for the amount of time it took you to make the cupcakes. That is your base price for the cupcakes alone. So you know you need to charge MORE than that to make a profit on the cupcakes. You decide what type of profit you want to make on the cupcakes. If your cupcakes will have decorations/toppers, you need to figure out the cost of each decoration separately like we do the cake toppers/decorations. How much time will one topper take you? Multiply that amount of time by what you feel one hour of your time is worth. Then mark up by 50% to make a profit on that one topper. If you'll be making a dozen, you multiply times 12. Add up the cost of the cupcake with the cupcake toppers and that is the total cost for your cupcakes. Do the same with cookies. How long will it take you to make a batch of cookies? How intricate are they and how long will it take you to decorate each one? As you can see, it all comes down to your time and making sure you're not just paying yourself for you time but that you're making a profit as well. :) I hope that helps Mercedes! :)

This is very helpful thank you. I have since calculated my time and cost and changed my prices especially my cookies they take a lot of time.

Hi Deb! Thank you for your kind words. Giving your work away for free is the BEST way to learn how to charge. Why? Because if you do that long enough, you'll get burned out quickly and you'll realize that you've been working your behind off for absolutely nothing. If you want to get past feeling uncomfortable taking money, hoping is not going to do the job. You have to do more than just hope. You have to take action and CHOOSE not to work for free. You either are doing it as a hobby and only for fun, or you're going to take it seriously and turn it into a business (and still have fun). I made cakes for cents on the dollar for years and that is how I learned how to charge for my hard work. I think you definitely need to avail yourself of my Cake Artist's Guide. It will help open your eyes so you can see just how much time and money your cakes are costing YOU (and nobody else if you're giving them away). If you'd like to check it out, please visit www.krazykoolcakedesigns.ecwid.com I wish you the best and thank you for watching. God bless you! :)

Hi Basirat! You're VERY welcome! Glad the videos are helping you! As far as including the ingredients in the price, make sure you watch our video on how to charge per serving for your cakes. HI Joy! Yes we do send an invoice that describes the cake design, flavors, etc. in detail, down to colors. etc. But, we do not specify a cost for each decoration. Hi guys! I am having a bit of a hard time understanding the profit portion of charging above my time spent for my work. I think it is because I work full time and I get paid hourly. And what I get paid is what I get paid. Doesn't include a markup for profit. Can you explain why there would be the difference here in a cake business? I'm just really having a hard time wrapping my head around it. Thanks so much!
@krazykoolcakes7 жыл бұрын
Hi Terri! Thanks for your question. :) Yes you're right. On your job, what you get paid is what you get paid. You're not making any "profit" from having an hourly job. That job is only paying you for your time (per hour). When you have a business of your own, you have to make a profit, or I should say, you should WANT to make a profit. Not just be paid for your time... I hope that makes sense. People are in business to make a profit, not to break even. People that have wage jobs are being paid for their time only, and all they do is break even. Zero profit. Your boss is paying you a $ amount in EXCHANGE for one hour of your time. It's an "even trade". I hope that makes sense. A lot of Cake Artists not only do they NOT make a profit (only break even), but the MAJORITY of Cake Artists undercharge for their work. That means they are in the RED. They're actually losing money and not even paying themselves for their time. They are basically donating their time or paying the client to allow them to make the cake for them. These videos hopefully will help our fellow Cake Artists learn how to NOT JUST break even, but how to make a profit. If there is no profit Terri, how will our income, life situation, and circumstances ever improve financially? There needs to be a profit if we want things to improve. Only paying yourself for your time will cause things to always just stay the same. I hope that helps clarify. Please let me know if you have any other questions. God bless you! :)

Hi Laura and Arnie! Love you guys! I'm in East Texas. I have to say I almost had a heart attack on the minimum for Princess Poppy lol. I'm curious what the total price was for that entire cake. Do you figure each decoration and then add on the cake amount for your final price? By the way, Wow! Beautiful job on the decorations y'all! Thanks for the video.
@krazykoolcakes6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Christina! Love you too! :) Yes, a lot of people do freak out when they know the price on that. LOL. I have that very same Poppy polymer clay cake topper for sale in my Etsy shop and once in a while I get an email asking "Is that price right? Or is it a typo?". As if I'm going to answer, "oh yes, I'm sorry. I accidentally added the zero". LOL! Really? LOL! $45. That's just somebody who is clueless as to the amount of work involved. Not their fault though. They just don't know any better... Yes, if you'll continue watching the videos, you'll see that that's exactly how we calculate the cost of a cake. You charge for the cake itself (according to intricacy), then you add on the cost of the decorations to give you the total cost. Glad you enjoyed the video! :)

I was wondering about the medium used for Poppy. It makes a lot more sense when you think about being able to keep it as a decoration in your home than just something to see then eat. :) Thanks for the reply!

@krazykoolcakes6 жыл бұрын
Hi Basirat! "Mark up" means to increase the price by a certain amount. Typically large companies that use machines to build/make their products "mark up" their prices by around 30%. Since yours are handmade and they also involve artistry, we recommend "marking up" (or increasing the price) by much more than that. Remember your cakes and decorations are a LUXURY and not a necessity. So happy your confidence is building up my friend! God bless you and the work of your hands! :)

What about customers who get the quotations then change what they want?
@krazykoolcakes6 жыл бұрын
That's an easy one! LOL! You just give them a NEW quote. Every time THEY change something, the PRICE CHANGES.

That's a lot for the topper. No??
@krazykoolcakes7 жыл бұрын
To some people who may not be able to afford it, OF COURSE. But not to the Cake Artist who spends all of those hours hand-sculpting it, like ME. LOL. That topper is worth every cent (it's actually worth more than what we mentioned in the video). Not at all "a lot". :) In this video we only used $20/hr as an example for a Cake Artist who is just starting out. We pay ourselves more than that and have clients who are more than happy to pay. :) The goal of these videos are to help you see that it's not about "a lot", it's about being paid what the work is REALLY worth. Thanks for watching! :)

Did it really take you 15 hours tho or were these examples not realistic??
@krazykoolcakes7 жыл бұрын
LOL. It took me more like 20 hours like my hubby said in the video. As aforementioned in the previous comment, we only used the PAY PER HOUR as an "example". You need to fill in the blank for what YOU feel one hour of YOUR time is worth. Yes it did take 20 hours to get the Poppy cake topper to look like the actual character. Others may take a lot less time with it and the outcome of course may be different. :) Hope that helps!
