Paid a "painter" to do my van and I specifically said I didn't want a flat paint job and wanted a factory acceptable orange peel finish which he agreed to it. After 7 weeks of work i was left with a van with a paint job so cut back and flat (likely to hide defects) with deep polishing swirls but the primer showing in many places in direct light. Even with all the cutback he did there are still heaps of orbital sanding swirl marks(dont think he had a DA) from his prep work, paint runs and panels that are inconsistent in appearance plus over spray on suspension equipment. im now having to sand it all back and learn the best way to do some work myself as I cant afford to pay another 6k+ for a painter to do the work...sigh... Thank you for sharing your knowledge to help people like me in my situation. Just about to order a few different lengths and flexibility dura-block's for sanding it correct as there are heaps of defects....just watched your gun review of the DeVILBISS FLG5 1.3. Would it work to spray the 2k primer build myself to sand back. If feeling confident with spraying maybe do the top coat as well. If not feeling like I can trust myself I will pay someone to topcoat. Thanks again.

Another awesome vid. Keep it up! Have a quick question. I have a brand new fiberglass hood and fenders from ford, for a raptor. Was wondering how I should prep them. It says it has a Cathodic electrocoat coating and not to remove it. Can I spray base coat over that or should I prime it first and block sand it. If so what type of primer do you recommend?
@TheGunmanChannel10 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, I usually sand with 320 orbital sander and interface pad then prime with normal polyurethane automotive 2k primer then re sand and pick up any pinholes and re prime if necessary because fiberglass is prone to air pockets that open up in to visible holes. This video will be perfect to answer your question kzbin.info/www/bejne/e36blJV8eqh5hMU

Hello Gunman. When re spraying a basecoat clear coat the same color, do I need to prime the whole car, or only spot prime areas that have been repaired or broke through to metal. I have bought a devilbiss tekna gun and want to respray my 2007 Dodge Charger that is brilliant black. Thanks for all the great videos, best place on the web to learn!! John.

Fine throw sander or regular orbit? I wish you would include more audio of the air sander. I'd love to find a better technique to use less sand paper (800 grit) on panels. I have a 3/16" throw MAC DA sander and a 3/32" fine throw snap on sander. Haven't used it much at all. Found it wasn't aggressive enough for body repairs and feathering paint to steel. Would it be nice for sanding with 800-1000grit?

Great video and congratulations regarding opening your own shop! Let us know how that goes. I have a couple of questions if I may about laying down dark colors. One sedan I need to paint black. I've read that black is the hardest color to paint. Why is that and how can you do a good job with it? Lots of practice panels? The second car I'd like to paint midnight blue metallic with a hint of pearl in the clear. I've read that adding pearl to clear can also be a difficult proposition, and that it's best to put it in the first couple of CC but then do at least one CC with no pearl in it for buffing/polishing. What is the difficulty with putting pearl into a CC? Thanks Gunman!
@RPMX410 жыл бұрын
My 2 cents for what it's worth. Above all, batch mix and NEVER mix or add pearls to each mixing cup as you go, as you cannot maintain the same mixing ratio and that will show from cup to cup when sprayed. I always mix an extra pint for touch-ups so we don't have to match if there is later damage. Black, because of its high reflectivity, shows defects in bodywork, dust, dirt etc... much more than lighter colours. BUT, it is the best and easiest to get full coverage as you will see the lighter primers bleeding through the black. Harder to see that on whites and lighter coloured cars. Myself, I love spraying darker colours. Pros and cons. I'm sure G'Man has the "best" answer. He always does. :) Also, in the booth once, the painter didn't have his cup secured onto the bottom of the (siphon feed) gun and the cup came off and dropped to the floor. Paint didn't hit the car luckily, but if we had only mixed enough paint for the job, we'd have to try and match the first batch mix. Another good reason to mix extra. At least one cupful anyway. LOL Again, will yield to the G'Man for the "pro answer".
@RX7GSLSEowner10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply RPMX4. I don't understand the part about the inability to maintain the same mix ratio when adding pearls as you go. Do you mean adding pearls into the *same* cup? If so, I could understand that.

Hey Gunman, I've been watching tons of your videos. I"m a huge fan! I'm about to paint my fiberglass bodied car. I have to smooth out some seams and I'm pretty sure the sanding will cut through the gel coat in some areas. Do I use gelcoat to seal the fiberglass and then do a normal application of filler? Or do I just go right to body filler? I hope you can help.

If you are going to do paint graphics on a large hood, where existing paint is okay, would you said the whole hood first, lay your fine line tape, paint graphics, remove tape and clear the whoe care. Or would you lay out the graphics and try to just sand inside the fine line tape where your graphics are going to go?

I have been painting my fathers hj kingswood..its a show car 486ci and im happy with the job but 1 area I used primer on a flat area rear quarter i used 320 with a block and to the touch it was perfect..then I used 400 over hole car before paint...all went well looks like clear ice on e painted but this one primer spot has the big primer ring lines around it when I painted it? So I did it again...and it felt even better to the touch and didn't show up when I used guide coat just to see if it would show high spot ring...didnt show anything but when I painted it it showed up again and noticeable...colour is custom crazy plumb purple..Similar to the ba falcon but with more pearl...any help gunman

Some say it is too coarse but it works a treat for me every time, go to 1000 if you aren't confident using 800.

In this particular occasion can i.. lets say go over the primed area directly with the orbital sander and 320, and then again with the orbital sander and 500 over the entire panel? And after that procedure to go over the entire panel again with some grey scotchbrite? Will it do the job? Are the scratches from 500 going to be visible...? Thank you.

500 is usually enough for basecoat

Hello Gunnman, I'm verry passionate about this trade. I work @ home with a friend i have bought a old CMC Mirage downdraft SprayBooth. I have a Devilbiss Startline 3 guns kit (0.8/1.3/1.6) And a FLG5 witch is in for a repair (spray pattern is crap). I have just bought a 7,5 KW compressor and a old 500L Air container so air is not a problem. I would like to make a investment and buy 2 GTI PRO LITE watching your videos i have seen that you apreciate the TE20 Cap @ 1,3 fluid. What do you think about (PROL-HV30B-1,3 Base and PROL-TE20C-13 Clear)? I REALY APRECIATE YOUR WORK. Keep it UP! And Hi from Romania!
