My background in a nutshell. Retired 5 years, 45 years in the trade. Tool and Die maker, prototype R&D machinist manuals. Back to school spent the last 20 years as a manufacturing engineer process planning , programming (mastercam), tool and gage design (solidworks), and onsite with customers doing design for manufacture anyalsis for Boeing and Honeywell Aerospace. I think you are doing a wonderful job that is so needed for todays up and coming machinist and the industry. Keep up the great work. My story is similar to yours way back when, glad your here.

I just retired after 47 years and half a dozen shops. Wish I had found you years ago. I ran CNC intermittently, and the material list was constantly being added to. I used the net to help figure out some tough situations. You are by far the best I've seen at explaining some of these hard to run materials.

OK, this is amazing. I have spent many many years learning on my own because of 60-year-old "expert" machinists who thought that I would steal the trade or something. Me also having a M.Sc. in engineering made me sort of a double-whammy of dislike for them. And having experienced what I call "seal-the-trade" mentality, seeing a video like this with so much info on the nuances of Inconel and holding tolerances there... This is invaluable!!!
@GUNNER12R
@GUNNER12R 5 жыл бұрын
To a 60 year old tool and die maker you did steal their job. Being caught in the middle of a craft changing technology like an old school machinist verses a new school CNC operator was a very cruel place to be. Far too old to relearn the trade and becoming worth less by the day. It was and is a very sad situation.

Currently in my final session of Machinist trades school up here in Alberta, Canada. We are focusing on CNC Milling (something I have very little experience with as a lathe guy), so this video has helped me understand a bit better what I am not quite understanding in the classroom (it helps to get a couple perspectives). Also, recently dealt with inconel, so maybe I can machine it better next time the job comes up.

I am machining inconel on a manual lathe. Had problem with melting the corners off a 3/4" drill running at 200RPM... I found drilling further with a 1/2" drill at the same speed was much easier. I'm finding this stuff easier to machine if you go much slower than nornal. It's a bit like drilling into a very tough stainless steel, like a piece of Cutlery. Sometimes if I accidentally work harden doing a 1/8" hole I have had success breaking through it using some little single flute carbide router bits... I've even had success grinding a masonry drill into the shape of the tip of a normal drill to get through something that's work hardened

This type of intelligence is the type that we in the U.S. need badly. I believe we still have the heart to make the world a better place. We can't do that without this type of genius though. Smaller societies with much less population are doing better and that's a shame. Design a ship to go to Mars? Or a vehicle that lasts forever and runs on a "universal energy?" Who do YOU think will build the parts? Not even pandering here, honestly. Think and then think again about the process, our accomplishments and what we have to do to get back to working on the goal. THE goal actually.
