Helpful video! I had to move quickly as soon as the TV came on to use channel up to get it to turn off and then to set up the input for everything to "stick" . If I paused in the steps at all, it no longer recognized that I was pressing the power button. Once I went through all steps in the sequence, all is working well--tv power, volume, and input. You are a lifesaver...My Life!!! We have been on Direct TV for 2 months and using one remote to turn the TV on/off and for the volume. And the Direct remote to change channels, record, etc. Kept misplacing the on/off remote. It's hard to keep track of two of anything. So-o-o I thought I would surprise my husband and program the Direct TV remote to handle everything. UNFORTUNATELY FOR ME...I tried to do this the night before Thanksgiving and all his football games. I used the instructions that Direct TV posts on the internet. I Got the DT remote to handle the sound, but when I tried to program it to turn the TV on/off, the TV screen jumped to grey. No picture. What a mess!! Needless-to-Say, my husband spent Thanksgiving at someone else's house. After I was over the shock of the biggest argument we have had in 30 years of marriage, I found your You Tube posting. And followed your instructions. Your step-by-step directions were right on. We are now watching TV again in our house. And we wonder what our pioneer fathers did before television? Of course, that was also before football...so nobody really cared. Thank you again and again.

I could not get this to work, but I have a helpful tip for those who have the receiver programed to the remote but not the tv, like I did. Go to MENU of the receiver on the Directv remote. Go to Settings, then Remote Control. Select to program the TV option, then enter your TV's brand and model. The remote should then program itself to your TV.

+Kim Costello I doesn't program itself, it gives you menus to follow for your brand and shows codes that could work. Program each code until you find the one that works. Then you slide the selector from TV back to the DirecTV logo and you're done.

This Emerson TV, is also made by sylivania and like 5 other companies. I know because mine is the same TV and even starts the same exact way, same plastic shape same stickers, just a dif name. I cant find it for my tv, BUT FYI for people with this TV, In the back there is one Capacitor 200V 270 or 220 UF, that capacitor will fail, its cheap crap, so find a VCR, rip it apart and get another cap, when it fails, its in most VCRs. Just a good thing to know.

So when I did this I got the TV to shut off and turn back on but I couldn't figure out how to keep the remote programed, so I read the instruction on the directv setting and you press select AFTER u press 'channel up' and the TV turns back on. Just a little heads up incase it doesn't work for others.

If it's not working for you, hit select after the procedure in the video, it should blink twice to confirm then your good to go.

I found the code on the second part & everything seemed to be going fine but when I turned TV on to try to change the channel 4 asterisks popped up in squares and it said enter password. I have no idea what they want. I wasn't made aware of one and don't think I ever made a 4 digit one.

Once you have gotten the tv to turn on by pressing down, you dont need to press up,.. INSTEAD,.. HIT SELECT.that enters the code you scanned in. i did that and THEN the input code worked.
