I asked you guys on Instagram recently how much you spend on ads for your music, and the average came out at $1 a day, so I have come up with a strategy for the best way to spend just $1 a day on advertising to promote your music.
If you want to learn more on the specifics of how to run ads, then check out my Music Business Academy, which has everything you need to grow your music career.

👇 ABOUT ME:
Hey! I'm Damian Keyes and I've worked with musicians every day of my life for the past 20 years. The internet is deeply untrusting understandably and here is my background so you can have the full picture.
When I was 18, I was signed to a major label (dropped 6 months later) and at 23 I co-founded a Music University in Europe called BIMM (valued at $300M). I’m also a bass player, I’ve played for a number of artists including Eric Clapton, Alanis Morrisette and Billy Cobham. I initially retired at 30, but realised that life gets boring if you’re not building!
I have always been in-between the music industry and education which is how I ended up building my KZbin channel - I’ve been teaching artists how to release music long before it was a ‘niche’! I now educate artists around the world with my Academy, KZbin channel and I work directly with labels internationally alongside owning a live agency and management company.
It’s great to meet you and looking forward to working together on your music!

Damian - dude you rock. You've quickly become my go to source for all Indie musician insights. I've learnt more in the last few weeks watching your vids than a couple of years of reading music blogs. I've got a question - I know you're super busy, so I laid out the answers below. You only need to type one letter. The question is, I am creating rock oriented instrumentals - what is the best way to promote that type of music without touring. I'm a one man band: a) Don't bother and don't give up your day job. b) If you don't have a day job - friggin' get one. c) I've got no idea - Spotify get's 40,000 submissions a day - what do you want from me? d) are you taking me for some sort of wanker? e) Well actually, there is a bit of a niche for instrumentals and this is what I'd suggest...... ( I know it's more than one letter but I sucked up pretty good I thought)

I would like to see an in-depth video on the differences between an ads campaign and boosting a post and what the ideal situation is for doing either of these. In the past, I saw a few videos saying you shouldn't boost a post in favor of making an ad, but now I've seen people mention that boosting a post can produce good results too.

Thanks for another one Damian! I've been going through many of your videos and starting to get a hang of it. Or at least that is the illusion I live in. I made the first successful Facebook ad recently and I believe it's thanks to sharpening the focus via your advice. It's not like new fans are pouring in the doors and windows BUT we are gettiing actual responses and likes from people that none of us in the band know of. I've set up 5 day and even a 1 day campaigns with a bit more money but maybe I should try something with a longer running time to let Facebook do its learning. My question is: you can set up a button in your ad like "message" or something else, I forget what. What should I make that button do? Another thing I don't know is how to guide people towards a spesific action after they've seen the ad, how do I suggest to push the like button or something else? I don't like begging so I've just presented us and what we do and I leave it up to the viewer to decide what they want to do next. Maybe there are subtle ways to ask for things? Also, the difference between different campaigns is a bit confusing to me, though you touched on that in this video a bit. Thanks!

You are so right about seeing the wrong ads on Instagram and Facebook. I have a couple of questions - what is the difference between running a Facebook traffic and a Facebook conversion campaign? Also what is Facebook pixel?
@DavidTheni
@DavidTheni 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul ✌️ I think I can help here! 😊 Traffic is about how many people will simply click on your ad... Conversion is about the lowest cost for somebody to PURCHASE or take a specific action...like buy something in your merch store, online business...Facebook pixel is a tool that allows Facebook to track their users once they've left Facebook and they're on your website. Best way to get that data and for re-targeting 😉 hope that helps ✌️

Great tip In using the lifetime amount for a fixed length of time rather than a daily. I have been busy for the last year putting out content, music, KZbin vids, fb and insta live-streams twice a week , a podcast “Quizz the Musicman” and vlog and now am starting to prep ads and begin to really engage and manage socials. Also, I recommend using a “fan finder” ie running multiple ads targeting different similar artists. For 1$ a day each you can see who’s fans like your music and then specifically target those fans. Interestingly my ads were the most popular with fans of James Taylor, Robert Mayer and Ed Sheeran !? Now to put some of your advice to work. I will let you know the results. Thanks for the videos and advice!

Hey Damo! Great video as always :) My question about ads would be this: how would you go about promoting a band thats hard to categorize? lets say an trap deathmetal band. theres just no chace to get the right audience for this because theres just not enough similar artists out there to put in as "common interests" and if you just target either trap or deathmetal on its own both dont seem to get any real traction.

I'm in the same boat, my music is all over the place - one track is ambient electronic, the next is acoustic piano+vocals, the next is industrial bellydance.... very hard to target people like that! So I end up targeting people for that particular song, but then the next song comes out and it's not in the genre they like so it's useless... And I can't stick to 1 genre, that's too boring!

@@thesuncollective1475 I'm with you... you need to stick with one genre, at least until you establish a die-hard fanbase. Look at Calvin Harris for example, the guy spent over a decade producing mainstream electronic music and acquired millions of fans. Now that he has decided to switch to a more underground/house sound, he created an alias and that alias has now hundreds of thousands of followers. Why is that? He established himself as a good DJ/producer and has a die-hard fanbase that is willing to listen to whatever new he comes up with.

This is very useful! You always find new things to suggest and, I think I speak for everyone when I say, we really appreciate your videos! ❤️ So would you recommend this strategy in general or does your approach evolve as budgets increase? If so, what sort of budget would you say is large enough to depart from this method? Thank you again 🙂
@DavidTheni
@DavidTheni 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there 😊 I think I can give you some value here. The thing with Facebook ads is that the algorithm needs a certain budget to learn. Learn what audience your piece of creative works with best and so on...that's why FB ads have so called "learning phases". It's also important to keep testing different pieces of content because a certain video might resonate more with your audience than others. So yes, budgets are important but depending on the audience size at some point Facebook has shown your ad to everybody who is likely to watch it and is cheap...so that's when your costs go up again. 😊 It usually takes a while to get to that point tho 😉 hope that answers your question ✌️

Never boost a post. Even if you only have a few dollars you’d be much better off running a video views or brand awareness ad through ad manager. Then you can trace data and retarget in the future. Boosting posts is basically like flushing money down the drain. You can’t retarget boosted posts.

Spending time as a kid knocking on doors selling people water heaters taught me that out of 100 people's door you knock on 3 will say yes no matter what. Great content man, it’s a real help! How do you deal with trying to advertise a niche artist? I’ve been told I sound similar to some artists who aren’t available as an interest on Facebook ads manager so end up widening the net to artists that don’t really have a synergy to what I do.

Thanks dude, niche audiences are perfect for this day and age but the key is in 2 things. Playing to your niche and really showing off and representing everyone in that demographic. Like creating a party for anyone who loves that style of music. 2. Hyper targeting so if you do any ads it boosts make sure you really double down on targeting specific people in that niche. You’re not trying to get in front of 1m people .. just a few who are defo Into the same thing 😊😊

Do you recommend to release old songs again on spotify? we got about 30 songs online and never promoted it the right way. is it a good idea the release everything one by one whit a new artist name whit a marketing's budget? How about starting whit our 6 best songs?

Damian, what software can you use to permanently save all the people and conversations that you generate from the cash spent on those Fb ads?

A way to do that is by getting them on your mailing list. Find a way to direct your audience to a sign up form on your website.

There is a lot of wasted money on Facebook ads so make sure you really go to town on hyper targeting and also decide what you want to achieve with the money 😊😊

Scott's Bass Lessons is spending a bunch on KZbin advertisements. Do your own distribution and spend that money on advertisements. That way you are still even. Probably do better than distribution and prayer model.

Awesome video as always Damo! 🙏☮️ Immediately my question is, can we covertly send people away from Facebook in order to spread the word more? For example, if we choose video views, but then give a KZbin preview and put text on the video reading "For full video visit [Artist Name] on KZbin." Would this work as a way for artists like me (with names that aren't super hard to remember) to be able to gain a little more bang for the buck?

Yes but not effectively for $1 a day, my ads courses will break down how you can take people away from the platform 😊
