Hello Lee. The pronunciation will sound very different in parts of Britain and Ireland due to the many different accents and dialects we have speaking English. It makes it most fascinating.
@Esther198704 ай бұрын
I’m here because as a native Londoner who works in a museum (so lots of tourists) I’m constantly having to repeat myself when I tell people they “can take photos” I’m forever asked “can or cant” and it’s becoming tedious lol. I was so confused because when I say these words they sound completely different and didn’t understand how they could be mixed up. I tried to change it up to “you are allowed to take photos” but was disappointed when they starting asking “are or arn’t” HELP!! 😂
@Pronunciationwithemma4 ай бұрын
Better to say 'YES, you can take photos' so they at least hear the 'yes', maybe? 😅
@Esther198704 ай бұрын
@@Pronunciationwithemma Haha I wasn’t expecting a reply. It’s a small museum and I tell every person on the way in to take their time and that they can take photos, so whilst it may be a little odd to start a sentence with “yes” I’m going to take that piece of advice and say “and yes you can take photos” along with my over exaggerated thumbs up 🤣 if it works it’ll still stop the confusion. I asked some Americans earlier how they pronounce the word can’t and they had no idea what I was asking lol, to be fair though I am extremely cockney 😂. Much appreciated!

Ema, I came here to learn the difference between Can and Can't when they are pronounced by the native. You taught very excellently but unfortunately, I failed to concenter my mind. Do you know why? It's because of your beautiful eyes. I have never seen such beautiful eyes in my life. They are as blue as like ocean , as big as like sky.When you smile, It seems that all beauty of the heaven and earth are come out from your facial expression. I would really be very fortunate, If I could build a friendship with you.

This was really interesting. In American English, people make an "a" sound, as in "cat" when pronouncing "can't". On the other hand, when they want to say "can", they just make a schaw sound. It's always great to learn about those differences. Thank you teacher Emma.

OscarG We use a schwa in British English too for “can” (never for “can’t”, as negatives are never weakened in rapid speech). American English is a whole different kettle of fish in terms of pronunciation too, but it’s just as interesting! 😁
