As a non native English speaker, your explanation and pronounciation makes the most sense to me compared to other teachers. I do hear the difference when you say those words, but when I try to pronouce them, it is just difficult. I always thought dr/J are pronounced in the same way, until people look confused when I try to say "Jane" but "drain" came out. Now I know what I need to do to improve, thank you so much.

Thank you! I have a question. Why is Chicago pronounced [ʃikɑ́:ɡou]? Not typical CH sound.
@tarlespeech7 жыл бұрын
Jihun Bak good question. I didn't know. Here is what I found: " "Most sources agree that the present-day pronunciation of 'Chicago' derives from the variation of a Native American term by early French-speaking settlers, but there's also evidence to suggest the distinctive 'shh' goes back to its Indian origins," says Tim Samuelson, cultural historian for the City of Chicago. He points to an early 19th Century source that describes the Native American pronunciation as "Shig-gau-go" and defines the name as "the skunk."
Tarle Speech & Language Services - English Pronunciation it is multicultural. Thank you for long explanation. ^-^ sometimes I find there are some confusing pronunciations. Ronald Reagan is a typical example. It sounds like 'reigan'. Avril Lavigne is pronounced 'lavin', not 'la-vi-g-ne'. Some words are deleted in pronunciation. It is difficult but makes English interesting.

As R in TR/DR cluster is in the beginning of a word, does it have the shape of a beginning R sound, meaning the lips come into a tighter circle like in "red" ? It seems like you just have your lips flare as /ɚ/ though. Thanks!
@tarlespeech4 жыл бұрын
They do "flare" a bit. R in English varies slightly depending on the sounds around it. This makes it very difficult. Hang in there!
@janeliu17254 жыл бұрын
@@tarlespeech I'm just wondering if you make this R sound in cluster by having the lips come into a tighter circle like in "red" ? Or is it the same way of making BR, SHR, etc? I feel like it's much easier to make the R sound on its own, which is the same as the /ɝ/ sound. In this way, we'll keep the lips the same position, which is always flared. After making the CH sound, then we just need to flip the tongue tip up to make the R sound. Do you agree? Thanks!

Pronounce the letter “C” as an “S” sound if the letter “C” is followed by the letters “E”, “I”, or “Y”. This is true in the words “central”, “city”, and “cyst”. The D is different than in the word I'd. The R here is quieter and not as strong as in I'd.

I think that what most people mean when they say that the "ch" sound sounds like "tr" and "j" sounds like "dr" is not that "tr" and "dr" literally sound like "ch" and "j," but that the resulting blends of "t + r" & "d + r" end up sounding very close to something like "chr" and "jr". At least to my ears, there's literally zero difference between chRain and train or jRaw and draw (when spoken fast). If I pronounce everything very clearly then yes, the sounds are different.
