Hello! I'm John Russell.
Let’s continue our exploration of common words, phrases, and questions in American English.
In a recent lesson, we explored how to ask about directions. In order to give directions, there are two important words we need to pronounce well - left and right.
We covered “left” in our previous video, so today we will cover “right.”
Let’s start by breaking the word into its individual parts.
We have one vowel sound and two consonant sounds.
We can notice a similarity between “left” and “right.” Both end with this consonant sound: -t
Repeat after me:
-t
-t
-t
Then we have the vowel sound. Watch and repeat after me:
i
i
We can now combine our vowel sound and consonant sound. Watch and repeat after me:
-ight
-ight
-ight
Finally, we arrive at our first consonant sound. This one can be a bit tricky, so be sure to pay close attention to my lips.

After all that work, we can put together all of our individual sounds and pronounce the word together:
right
right
right
That’s all for today! Keep up the good work.
