My biggest reason for learning German besides visiting Germany again someday is to help myself pronounce German names correctly. At the same time, I always wish everyone outside of China and Taiwan can easily pronounce Chinese names in standard Mandarin correctly, at least by minding the tones by saying the tonal pronunciations correctly like how native speakers of standard Mandarin do.

I always remember when I was a child and Michael Schumacher was driving and the Finnish commentator on TV got his name wrong every time and my dad would "correct him" every time. It's sad that English pronunciation rules and conventions have confused so many Europeans and French, German, Italian etc. names are lost to them.

Unfortunately English is not a phonetic language. Add to that the fact that English has many dialects. There is no common standard, like Hochdeutsch. But at least English does not require the memorization of the gender for each word in the dictionary, as with the Latin, Germanic and Slavic languages.
