Here in Mexico Iron man is always pronounced "Eye-ron man", so I was mind blown when I heard "Mining is how iron a living" Thanks for clearing it up!

What I want to know is which dialects/accents are 'ion' and 'iron' exact homonyms? They certainly are in British RP, and I think Australian. But I'm less sure about American, Irish, Northern irish, Scottish, which all pronounce 'iron' with a bit more 'r' in it, but then maybe they tend to put the same sound into 'ion' too? This matters when trying to describe batteries as both 'lithium ion' and 'Lithium iron phosphate' are types of battery, and it's quite confusing.

There isn't really a "proper" way to say the name of a country. ;) It depends on which language you are speaking. For example, Germany is "Deutschland" in German, but we would never say that in English.
