I teach using just one of many accents in the world. Please only learn it if you like it and if you are interested in learning it. I do not believe there is one “correct” accent or manner of pronunciation and I fully encourage EFL/ESL learners to expose themselves to as many varieties of English around the world to become accustomed to the beautiful variations of this world language. I focus mostly on teaching “Modern RP” (I may just say “RP” in my older videos, but to clarify, I do specifically mean “Modern RP”), however, you will hear a lovely little Yorkshire twang to my accent from time to time too. Please LOVE and BE PROUD of your accent. After all, it is part of your identity and makes you unique. 💚

Hello Emma! First of all thank you for your videos! These are extremely helpful for an English teacher in training who struggles with her pronunciation. However, I still struggle a lot to pronounce the difference between w and r. It might be something related to my accent, but it would be great if you could give a small hint how I can better distinguish it while speaking? For example the words rich and witch sound pretty similar when I say them. Thank you so much in advance! I want to try my best to become a good teacher, thus, I need to be a role model to the students.

This is a very fundamental question. Japanese do not have the consciousness or habit of *recognizing consonants alone* as speech sound. So when listening to *"light/right"* , we (I) do not recognize the sounds *"l"* or *"r"* alone, but rather *"la"* and *"ra"* combined with vowels. In other words, we recognize the *INSTANTANEOUS EXPLOSIVE SOUND* of the *TRANSITION* changing from a consonant to a vowel. I think/doubt that native speakers recognize the consonant alone before the explosive transition. *LA = lll la aaaa, RA = rrr ra aaaa* where *"la"* and *"ra"* express an explosive transision Since I am Japanese, I cannot hear *"lll"* and *"rrr"* part and hear only the very short explosive part *"la"* and *"ra"* . Do You, native english speakers, really produce/recognize the preceeding part *"lll"* or *"rrr"* ? Or you also produce only after *"la"* and *"ra"* part as Japanese? I think the short explosive part *"la" and "ra" are similar even to native speakers* and it can be a main reason that Japanese can not distinguish the two sound "L" and "R" in English. It also explain that Japanese are bad at distinguishing explosive sound *"ba"* and fricative sound *"va"* . I think Japanese people unconsciously recognize the parts that are close to rupture and ignore the important sound before it. These short explosive parts are similar. To sum up, *MY QUESTION* is whether *ENGLISH NATIVE SPEAKERS PRODUCE/RECOGNIZE A CONSONANT BEFORE THE EXPLOSIVE TRANSITION "LA" AND "RA"?* Some people respond and some don't, and I want to ask many native speakers, so I think I'll post the same question in several movies in KZbin. I apologize to those who find it annoying to see similar comments multiple times. The following is Japanese version of the above comment for Japanese people. これは,根本的な質問です. 日本人は子音単独で音声と認識する意識と習慣がないので, light/right を聞くときは,l や r 単独の音を認識することはなく,母音と合成された la と ra を認識しています. *LA = lll la aaaa, RA = rrr ra aaaa* where "la" and "ra" express an explosive transision

I don´t know if you have explained RP but it is important to emphasize that it is not a question of status but of universal clarity since it is accent free. RP can of course be defined as an accent onto its own but this is not strictly true since it is not bound to any specific region and is not tied to social class as for instance aristocratic forms of English. No language in the world is so dependent on an accent free version and strict grammatical rules. American English is deeply flawed with very incomplete use of adverbs for instance, and phonemes are often very inaccurate, no differentiating between "cant" and "can´t" etc.
