Also want to say: You make the rule very clear to understand. I was listening to something in French online, and was confused since the speaker pronounced the S at the end of PLUS. ( I thought all of letter "S" at end of words were *silent*) When I looked up the question, the search engine brought me to your page here, 😊

Salut Dylane. here I'm confused! plus que deux jours d'école; et si je dis: plus de deux jours d'école= more than two days of school. dois-je prononcer le S ou non? Et merci pout tout.
@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane4 жыл бұрын
Salut Kamel. Technically you should say pluS, with the S pronounced. But it's a weird way to say it. We would say "encore deux jours d'école" or "un peu pluS de deux jours d'école". I hope it helps 🙂

I love the way you sometimes say Plus when without the S. It comes out as a sort of soft sigh at the end , should us students of French try to emulate that ? or is it a feminine/ regional thing ? I've also noticed a similar sound with words like Tu from some other french speakers.

Great video Dylana. I even have not paid attention to pronunciation of "plus" till now. But it really confusing as you said. So, I wonder how rude or incorrect will I sound if I don't stick to this rule. I mean, is it crucial for native speaker to understand me?
@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane4 жыл бұрын
no Asif it’s not crucial to be understood and you won’t do a faux pas by mixing them up don’t worry 😉 with time you will get it right, no need to force it

The problem is the French often don't use "ne" so j'en veux plus could mean either I want more, or I want no more. Why does every french youtube channel ignore this? No one uses "ne". If they did, there wouldn't be any confusion whether or not "plus" means "more" or "no more" Je n'ai plus de temps = I have no more time J'ai plus de temps = I have more time. But they drop the "n" and just say "J'ai plus de temps" This is where they typically pronounce the s if they mean "more", and drop it if they mean "no more" J'ai pluS de temps = I have more time J'ai plu de temps = I have no more time. Using examples with the "ne" isn't that helpful because it doesn't mimic real life.
@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane3 жыл бұрын
Not correct. J'en veux pluS = I want more J'en veux plus = I want no more. The rule applies even if we don't add the NE. Which I talk about a lot on my channel, but I am not going to repeat it in every single video. I teach academic French, I am not going to make a video without the NE and make people fail their exam. Also we do use NE when writing, but not when speaking. Having a good foundation allows to change it later on when you feel comfortable. Feel free to start your own KZbin channel if you aren't happy with what people teaches you for free online ;) And please don't say "the French" but "French speakers", as many other countries speak French. Thank you. Oh and "je n'ai plus de temps" - Nobody really says that.
@KaraLey98 Жыл бұрын
You are so right TommyJules902... I was reading an article which said that the young people today, and even the older people do not say "Ne" anymore to denote negative, just a real loud "PAS", so it is with other words which also call for the "Ne" in front of the verb.. Makes it so difficult if you have a habit ot using "ne" and you now must get rid of what you learned so many years ago.

But I detect an "S" sound in your speech , even when you claim that the "S" is silent, such as when it denotes a negative. Certainly it does not as loud or crisply pronounced as the other "S" which you demonstrate, in the "positive" or the "SZ" sound used before a consonant, but it is there.. It is a hissing souind, almost like you put your tongue in back of your lips to "shush" the S from being FULLY pronounced.
