Perfec explanation. The E in then is clear for Spanish ears and doesn't change. The A in than changes between accents and stresses in the sentence but it's not difficult to get the subbtle differences and it's a good word for a good start in the nightmare English is. Thinking of the A in than, either English and Spanish in America are more relaxed, not as dry as at this side of the pond. The Southern, the mooore laaaid baack

Stressed means the word gets more prominence in that it is louder, longer, higher in pitch.

It depends on your accent, I moved to California and many people here pronounce "than" as "then" and "can" as "Ken" (not similar, but exactly the same, with the same vowel length). However they pronounce "can't" correctly. I'm not sure how many "a" vowels are pronounced as "eh" it certainly doesn't impact all words. It must be confusing to people learning American English to hear Native Speakers using these non-standard pronunciations.
