In this video I show you my emersed Anubias grow setup and I show you how to propagate Anubias. This hydroponic system is cheap and easy to setup. It also grows Anubias Incredibly well! Below are links to all of the products featured in this video so you can setup your own grow. In my opinion Anubias is one of the best aquarium plants and something that everyone should try in their planted aquariums!

Hmmm.. You've given me an idea for my own setup.. I wonder how much it would cost to set up a small mister inside a large tank on a timer. You could recirculate it if you added a little more water and raised the plants a little bit. I love projects like this, thanks for video!

Excellen tutorial, i'm going to try it out myself. I think i will use expanded clay instead of hydroton media as its not available in my country. I try to propagate epiphite plants on soil for home plants but it doesnt work too well. I i will definately try your emersed anubias way :) Thank you!

Really awesome tips, man. Thank you! This method of anubias propagation is very popular with the Russians (they're passionate about anubias) & probably the best method since hydroton is pretty much sterile. Thus, minimizing chances of the dreaded 'anubias rot' disease from taking hold due to microbial processes that lead to septic conditions. Personally, I prefer this method of propagation since its sterile & trust me when you're dealing with touchy nano species e.g. Anubias 'pangolino' & A. 'chilli' hydroponics is the way to go.

Awesome video Mike. Thanks for sharing 👍👍👍👍 Just a few questions 1. How long does it take plants to reach saleable size from tiny shoots? 2. Can cocopeat or small gravel be used instead of clay pebbles? 3. How long daily do you recommend having lights on them? 4. Is there a requirement or standard height the light should be above the plants? I've a diy short height tank approx 12 inches high and wanted to know if it can work? 5. Can plastic wrap be used if have not lids?

What you reckon the maximum temperature the anubias can tolerate? Plan to put them in my antic, with window light. Worry it might be a bit hot, summer it can reach 40+C
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. I would try to keep it no higher than the 80'sF personally. 40c would be about 104F, I would say that's probably too warm. They would probably be okay from time to time, but I would be concerned if that was regular temps.

I am currently experiementing with Buce, once I have enough useful information you can bet Ill have a video (or entire series) specifically on Buce! I haven't noticed a whole lot of anubias melt transitioning from submersed to emersed myself. You need to make sure that humidity is as high as possible. A lid with little to no ventilation and periodic spraying should help with this 👍

hi, nice video again! im a fan from Thailand and i am just a little curios about what you did there. so when you first plant your anubias, i assume the roots wont be as long as 1/3 of the cup like you mentioned. so in that case, did you put water higher than 1/3 of the cup so it reaches the roots?

You said you placed the rhizome on top of the substrate but they look like they are down an inch or two. Do the rhizomes rot like in soil if placed too deep?
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab Жыл бұрын
Don’t bury the rhizome in emersed setups either. The rhizome is only the thickest horizontal piece that should stay on top of or above the substrate, the roots that extend down can go in substrate both in aquariums and in emersed setups. In my opinion a large portion of the roots should be in substrate. They will form fairly extensive root systems and acquire nutrient from those roots just like most other plants do. 🌱

For fertilizer can I use a fish safe one to start growing anubias emersed? I'm thinking easy green from co op since it's snail and fish safe
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 2 жыл бұрын
I would go with hydroponic ferts. While you won’t want to use hydroponic ferts in an aquarium with fish, the plants you grow will be perfectly fine to use in a fish tank. In fact most commercial farms grow hydroponically. While easy green would work, you will end up spending more and need to use a lot more of it to achieve the nutrient concentrations the plants need for optimum growth. I used to use 50 ppm nitrate as a rule of thumb. Now I’m using a solution of well over 100.

I would start fresh. Hydroponic nutrient solution is pretty cheap. I would use the old stuff in hour plants. You really shouldn't need to drain it that often, maybe once every couple of months.

Great guide thank you. I've been experimenting with Anubias nana but in a greenhouse outside using natural light. Can't say I'm having much luck as its winter here right now in New Zealand. I have my tank on the top shelf getting the most light so thinking about moving it down a shelf where it is more shaded and getting a solar panel light so at night the plants get light rather than during the day. Still trial and error.
@mooncricket16
@mooncricket16 3 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend a regular led light, you can get cheap ones online and they do not cost much to run, also I'd advise against leaving. Grow light in at night, because that would ruin the plants rest cycle

Hay could you give me a tip on propagation when it comes to Java fern? So my Java fern always drys out every time I try doing this so how can I prevent it from getting all shriveled up? Or is that normal?
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 3 жыл бұрын
Some shriveling is expected while the plant converts to emersed form, but it shouldn’t be too pronounced. Do you use a lid? I use a lid and don’t have any vent holes.

@@AquariumPlantLab thanks! Honestly I didn’t expect a response! But thanks for responding! I did use a lid and I was just worried because of shriveling so thanks that makes me feel better! Do they grow faster in water or on land? And also do they convert well back to immersed?
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 3 жыл бұрын
They convert very well. I have some videos about that topic from awhile ago. My tip is to watch for new growth. If the leaves are shriveling but no new growth is coming in then you have issues. I would say growth rate is definitely faster emersed but the main benefit is that the growth is algae free, larger, and generally healthier. Almost all aquarium plants are grown emersed at commercial farms.
