How to Propagate Artichokes

Artichokes are tasty treats and full of nutrition. The artichoke (Cynara cardunculus) is a perennial thistle whose flower is harvested for food before maturity. Easy to propagete. Nutrient dense. A great vegatable for the garden or landscape.

❤ thank you for the amazing extra info regarding homegrown foods. I needed to hear this as ive swayed away by (bad planning) not eating much veggies this last 2 years. I got chickens and they free range. ( need to stop that!) Gardens will save the pocket and good mental health. And im a pancreatic cancer survivor of 11 years❤

I really enjoyed this video! Thank you for sharing the health benefits. This is my 1st year growing artichoke, I was growing it only for the beautiful flower I heard it makes but you've got me excited about how good it is for the body so Thank you so much for such an informative video! :)

Thank you for this. I have oregano and I have Cardoons (a close artichoke relative - so close they have the same botanical name) - I think dividing the oragano is easier. For oner it isn't as spikey. Thank you for sharing this video as you have now made the prospect of dividing the cardoons less scary. Glad to know that they can be transpalted to pots as the bed mine are in needs to be reworked (the people who had the plot before put landscape fabric down 6 inches belot the surface - I found this out after I sowed the seed)

I planted seeds last year and this year we had so many, then the mother plant fell over and I cut her down to stump and then within 2 weeks we had ssssooooo many pups.... I didn't realize I could separate them, so I am definitely going to do that this next week :) thanks for the information :)

If one of the new separated plants has not many roots, would you ever consider reducing the leaf volume to match?

I was given some artichoke pups in a bucket. Split them into 13 plants, some of which I reduced down to one central leaf as not all had a good root system. Planted them out into new berms and within a couple of months, the ones with stronger roots are already putting out pups. They do wilt off a fair bit and ones with small roots need plenty of water, but I only lost one plant. I hope you have plenty of space, because once these start sending out pups you are going to need it. Good luck.

How long does it take for a plant to get this size? I love artichokes!

I have Artichoke starters in 4 inch pots after 6 weeks I can plant in my garden, than 4 weeks later you can start to fertilize with 20-0-0 every week, the are heavy nitrogen feeders and water as well, will be about 6 months for 1st harvest, unless you missed the season will take longer.

it looks like he may have over wintered them and is dividing them up in spring. But I see pups develop in fall sometimes too. I bet it could work both ways

Taz you can divide at any time. They are very resilient. Either way the outer leaves will die back. Just keep it watered and it will return. They are VERY hard to kill.

@@hokchigardensandhomestead6797 Another channel cut off the larger excess leaves and used as chop and drop for mulch around the plants. No waste
