Lets propagate Elderberry! Its native to America, and one of my favorite native plants! There's so many benefits of growing elderberry, it has medicinal purposes and the honey bees love elderberry flowers! Did I mention how easy it is to grow elderberry? Just 3 easy steps! I will never buy elderberry plants again, but I will sell them!

Thank you for sharing how easy to propagate your elderberry canes. I like the angle cut because it is easy to get confused about which is up for me.

Greetings from Jasper, GA! I went out a couple of weeks ago and harvested some wild elderberry stalks and did exactly what you did here. I have over 50 cuttings that have all rooted beautifully. My burning question is, how long will it be before they actually go to flower for me? I am very excited! Woo-hoo!

You should be able to look at a cutting & tell which way is up. Water roots are tender & will not grow in soil as soil roots do, the cutting may survive, but there is a lag, that you will not get in sand or poting mix.

Thanks! Probably to late to propagate this time of year, but I bush hogged a small elderberry patch last year by accident and now it’s back in full force with tons of elderberry pups sprouting up! Hope your enjoying life a little further down the mountains of nc!

I have read that you can take the cuttings in the winter and jam them directly in the ground skipping the mason jar step. I'll probably try both ways this year.
@WhistleThicket
@WhistleThicket 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I have used both methods. If you have lots of starts then go for it, if not I would root then first

@@WhistleThicket Thanks for the advice. I actually went out and took some cuttings today. A bit worried it may be too early in the winter but we will see.

I am late to this video but still trying to get elderberries established on my land (it's rather dry and degraded so they struggle but once established I hope they will be part of the solution). My concern about rooting them first is that they will awake from dormancy and you say you plant them outside in March but my problem with that, in my area at least, is they might get hit by frost AFTER they have already started leafing out and breaking dormancy (though if it works for you then I can't really argue). But I've stuck dormant cuttings in the ground in winter and it's worked fine and I feel like they establish roots and then wake from dormancy in their own time which increases their survival rate, especially since my part of the world can get very hot and dry very quickly in spring and they need to be well-established in the soil. I guess this year I will try both methods and see what works. Perhaps they root well before they start leading out? I know elder will start budding VERY early in winter, especially if it's mild, so I guess it can take some frost.

Do you know what type of Elder you have? I've heard that different types should be pruned differently.

Is February the only time to get the cuttings? I just found this after finding a plant last summer, missing harvest because of the birds, then noticed it has a little baby plant growing beside it, and decided to look up to see if I can make more! But they already have the little things they get before the flowers, is it too late? Or can I do it in the fall?
@WhistleThicket
@WhistleThicket 4 жыл бұрын
Probably too late for cuttings. I would wait until next Feb/March for cuttings. If the main plant has produced pups, you could probably tranplant!

I had bought a black elderberry plant last spring and thought most of it was dead during the winter now it is the 23 of March the snow has gone of the part of the lawn I broke parts of the branch off and thought was dead found it is a life the branches 3 six inches I left out parts of the ground yesterday so I picked them up now to know the elder plane is alive while part os it was dead I just put them in water in a small plastic small dish and will try to stick them back They are still green I have soil for them.
