Propagating Impatiens plants from cuttings couldn’t be easier and you’ll soon have homegrown Impatiens to share with friends and family.
The first step in growing Impatiens from cuttings is selecting a healthy ‘mother’ plant to take cuttings from. Avoid weak and diseased plants as these traits will carry into your propagated Impatiens plants. In this video I used Impatiens Auricoma x bicaudata, a vigorous shrubby Impatiens hybrid who’s parents originate from Madagascar.
Look for healthy fresh growth on your parent Impatiens plant and make your cut using clean tools. Always cut below a node as this will increase the chances of your cutting forming roots.
Impatiens cuttings lose water through their leaves and will quickly dehydrate so we need to take action to reduce this process. Remove all but the top two leaves from your Impatiens cutting, you can punch them off or cut them away using your clean secateurs. If the remaining two leaves are large it’s recommended that you cut them in half as this will further help reduce the amount of water lost before root formation.
If your Impatiens cutting is producing flowers or flower buds then you will need to remove these. Producing flowers consumes vast amounts of the plants energy reserves and we want to encourage all that energy to go into root formation.
Finally, sit your prepared Impatiens cutting material in a glass of fresh water on a cool windowsill. Change the water every two or three days to prevent stagnation and rot. In 3-6 weeks you should see plenty of healthy young white roots growing out from your Impatiens stem.
Pot up your rooted Impatiens cuttings into 9cm pots using multipurpose compost and your new Impatiens plants will quickly grow away.

Truly helpful video with simple and insightful explanations. Wonder if you can advise us please. I was given an impatiens ( possibly Niamniamensis- based on photos online). About 6 months ago It got knocked and a branch snapped off, I stuck that in water and roots grew so I potted it and gave it to my daughter. In one respect it is doing very well. But it has shot up so ( IMO) is a bit weedy and now needs a stick for support. And it remains only one branch. My own is multiple branches from base. It had big growth spurt after reporting ( only one size up) and this has meant it has thinned out. Is there anything that can be done for either plant to get them to bush out more? I have punched out the tops of mine to stop it growing further upwards. Thank you for any advice

Hi. Not sure if our plants had the same problem, but just wanted to mention I had an Impatiens arguta ("purple parrot flower") whose leaves were turning yellow at the bottom and falling off. This was a couple weeks ago. I decided to repot it and discovered it was extremely root-bound already and one root in particular was very long and had wound down around the bottom and even looked like mold was starting to grow around some of the exposed roots near the drainage holes. It took me a few hours to carefully untangle the roots. Within a few days of repotting in a bigger pot, the yellowing stopped and growth exploded over the next week. I also reduced watering a bit and tried to give it a little more sun (preferably morning sun or dappled). Hope this helps.

Mins you tge cuttings tgat were sent to me wasn't 2 inches. Extremely small. Can you give me any link that sells them already rooted.

Does anyone know the truth about the issue of 'water' roots versus soil roots? I too am obsessed with cuttings propagation but have never discovered whether the plant will now merely have something to hold it upright while it develops soil roots, or whether it can use the 'water' roots immediately, and that there is no practical difference?

They are a decent hight with new growth starting but not sure how long ago they was pulled from the mother plant. Thanks danny
@GrowParadise
@GrowParadise 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Danny, if they are rootless I would say you are better off giving them time to establish a good root system…1 growing season should be plenty of time. Then you can propagate it from root cuttings next year 👍 I hope that helps?

Aaaaah I see! In that case potting it up and watering is your best bet. I’d add some perlite to your potting mix to keep it open and airy to prevent it sitting in wet compost. I’ve rooted them like this before so long as they had the tiniest bit of root attached 👍
