@@kimcatledgecatledge5028 Hello Kim, the Zone really helps us, here are our thoughts. Different hydrangea species deal with cold more efficiently than others Hydrangea macrophylla is hardy to zone 6 HOWEVEVER it is more sensitive to cold than some others so needs a protected position to flower really well maybe less flowers than in warmer zones Hydrangea paniculata is better and even better (we think) is Hydrangea quercifolia. So it all depends on variety, hope this helps.

Hello from Adelaide in South Australia 🙂 I found this video very helpful, thank you Could you please advise once cutting has roots and then potted into their first small pot, what happens next as mine are now about 20-30cms high and have little green flower buds? Do I remove to green flowers buds (apologies I don't know the correct name) to allow to keep growing as my aim is to them move and the next size pot then another large pot and eventually, maybe the ground? Cheers Anna

Removing the flower buds will promote faster plant growth , and pinching out the tips will make a bushier plant as well, so yes.

Hello, can i ask if you put any holes around the bottle? And if the top part of the bottle is cut out as well or no? Thanks so much, your video is very helpful. I'm trying to propagate 3 big leaf macrophylla hydrangea cuttings, I hope it works. Have a nice day
@johnnyAGardening4 жыл бұрын
Hello Maggie and thanks for watching. We do not put extra holes in the bottle, just leave the top off. This works with Macrophylla types, sometimes a little rooting hormone powder or dipping the stems in a little honey helps with strike rate, we usually don't worry about using these though. Be patient, they can take a while to strike. Good luck with the cuttings and let us know how you go.

When i take the plastic bottle off, my hydrangea wilts. otherwise, its growing well for the last month. any recommendations so i can take the plastic off?
@johnnyAGardening4 жыл бұрын
Hard to tell without seeing the plant and knowing your location. Here are a few things to check. It sounds like the root system is not yet large enough to support the cutting. You could try placing it in a very shaded cool position if it is not already when you take the bottle off. Also check for soil moisture, it needs to be moist. Is the top on or off the bottle ? We usually have it off. Also ,if you have it, water it with a liquid seaweed solution which will promote root growth. Leave the bottle on for longer if all else fails.Let us know how it goes.

@@johnnyAGardening Thanks Johnny for the reply. I am in Ireland. Once I put the plastic bottle back on, it pops right back up and is looking fine again within hours. i currently have a 5 litre bottle over it, and to be honest, i had the bottle on upside down since the start so no top off, BUT, i have been taking it off every day for a little bit to water it. i moved from a 2 litre to 5 litre bottle within 2 weeks because it had grown so much! have cut a hole in the top of the 5 litre bottle to allow air to get through and hydrangea looks fine since doing that. I tried the shaded cool position but it still wilted with plastic off. i also checked the root system of the hydrangea (by slightly pulling the stem) and it seems firmly established in the ground. ill try liquid seaweed solution next, thanks :)

What type of soil I need to plant hydrangeas and if I plant in august it is ok?please help me I am new to gardening
@johnnyAGardening4 жыл бұрын
Hello Usha. Firstly we assume you are growing it in the ground SO... Hydrangea grow best in a humus rich free draining soil. They do like moisture, but not wet soggy soil, also not at best in clay soils or very sandy soils. IF its is in a post then a good quality potting mix will do. As for when to plant, it depends on where you are located, but generally, they re not fussy. Make sure you water it in well and mulch around the plant to help maintain a cool moist root run. If you let us know your location and climate we can be more specific.

@johnnyAGardening4 жыл бұрын
Once the plant puts on new growth we want it to branch out rather than just send up a central leader. So we 'Pinch Out' (prune or cut away, but generally just pinch it out with our fingers ) the central new growth to help promote a bushier growth habit

Hi. I was wondering where I could find information on growing my own hydrangeas inside in smaller pots. What I'm trying to do is grow potted hydrangea that will be in bloom at the end of September. I would like to use these potted plants for centerpieces for my wedding on September 30, 2017. I'm just trying to figure out when I should plant them indoors to have blooms by that date. I cannot seem to find any information on blooming time from planting. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I thought having the potted would be nice gifts for guests to take home to plant in their own garden!! Thanks!
@johnnyAGardening7 жыл бұрын
It is difficult to grow Hydrangeas indoors, they need a cold winter and then flower in spring to summer. To grow them indoors and get them to flower by a specific date would be difficult. Also keeping them small enough to use as a centerpiece will most likely cause flowering problems. Where are you located.

Tammy, I'm interested to know if you did go ahead and try hydrangeas for your wedding? I know you have a later growing season up there than we do down here in Oregon, but I don't think that much later that you'd have blossoms end of September. Hope you see this and update us!
