Well explained and thoroughly enjoyable. I'm on the verge of propagating my hydrangeas here in Durban, South Africa. Wish me luck as I'm a beginner at age 85. Thank you for your endeavours.

i have been an avid gardener for 45 plus yrs and i just drop my cuttings in a jar of tap water and put them in a warm place. i change the water once a week topping up when needed. have never paid out for all these products which were never available when i began gardening...this of course depends on where you live😀

I love your accent , I'm a southern girl from SC , people always tell me how "country" my voice is ! I use to not like it when people said that , but over the years I've gotten over it , I now take it as a compliment lol ! It's fun & refreshing to hear your "northern girl" accent ! You have a beautiful voice as well as a beautiful garden !! 🖤💜💙

This was a terrific video. I am so upset with myself because we moved to a house with zero landscaping. I love gardening but to start from nothing to get to where I was at our last house will be ridiculously expensive! I had a bazillion hydrangeas at the last house and could have at least had a headstart using your method!

I agree with @danielleaf9146 below, I'll bet the new owners will let you take some cuttings . Another thing to consider is that cuttings take a long time to reach a mature size , If you wait until mid to late summer , many nurseries, home depot and lowes usually have great end of season sales and you can get large mature hydrangeas and other great landscaping plants . 🌸🌸 Thank you for you kind comment .

Most of the flowers in my yard are rooted from cutting and/or seeds I got from family n friends and I go to the sale rack at my local box stores Lowes n Walmart r the main ones. Gardening can be expensive. In September, Labor Day is usually when the stores have soil n mulch on sale n some summer plants as they are bringing in winter plants. Check your local stores. I also use free pine straw for mulch. Azales n rodododendron love pine tree straw as their mulch. Use leaves in your hard also as mulch. Start of slow n things will grow, you will have your beautiful garden again!😊

OMG, this video was so helpful. I cannot tell you how much I realized that I have wasted countless annuals by not knowing how to propagate. It is so helpful to know this information. I followed your instruction and now have about 15 successful propagations that have super-root growths going on. I propagated some coleus plants as well, and they have done exceptionally well. I'm using those for my new fall container gardening arrangements. I don't have to spend a small fortune on buying the young versions all over again. I plan to now do more bins since I've had such success. I'm so excited and I really appreciate this very helpful video. ***** on cost savings.

Hi Kelly, Same as Mr Tseed here. Looking for the next step once roots are established. Fourth attempt for me to try and propagate from my mum's probably Niko type?? Bloody massive heads, gorgeous. She passed away, a fabulous witty 97 yr old, last year when of course we couldn't be with her due to covid. With your help, this is the furthest I've gotten and am fairly desperate for it to work this time! Thank you much ☘
@KellyLehman
@KellyLehman 2 жыл бұрын
Hey there Jo , God bless your mum . Sounds like she lead a full life at passing at 97 ❤️ . So the nexts steps I would take would be to transplant them Into larger pots once they start growing a bit . I would put a mixture of potting soil and garden soil in the pots and baby them a bit more . Then I would keep half the plants in the pots to overwinter in a protected area like a garage or garden shed that gets sunlight and them plant them in spring after there is no more threat in of frost and the other half I would plant directly into the garden this fall at least 6 weeks before the ground freezes so the roots can get established. Make sure they don’t get too much wind of excessive exposure to rough elements of nature where you plant them since they are still tender plants . An area that is semi protected by other shrubs to block the wind yet still allow lots of sunlight in would be ideal . Make sure to plant in well drained soil too . Good luck 🌸❤️

@@KellyLehman Thank you Kelly. Before I got your reply, I transplanted the cuttings into pots with potting soil, they looked really good and healthy., even sprouted some new growth. About a week later, they got a bit "fungussy", stems turning brown, some of the leaves rotted etc, the same thing happened last time. I worried that the soil was too rich, so discarded it for a sterile mix?? Some of the cuttings root system had diminished, some gone completely. I did some fresh cuts and applied rooting agent to those. Had at least half a dozen still good looking but now they are just bare stems. 😩Thought I'd just leave them in the pots and hope for a miracle in Spring! Thanks again for your help and info.

Once you put them into the Perlite and put them in a shaded spot, how often do you add water to the Perlite? Do you keep it moist all of the time? Do you put the lid on tight or do you allow some air to circulate? First time doing this so want to be successful.

Hi Kelly, thank you for this informative video, Loved it. I have been gardening for about 5 years and still learning. I do have a twist and shout hydrangea in my front yard (5yrs. old), sadly my endless summer that was next to it died 2yrs. ago. For mothers day my daughter gifted me a house plant hydrangea. I gave it everything it needed, took care of it as per the directions but, it started to die. My daughter said to me... throw it away mom it's dead. I did not throw it away... I said I am taking a different approach and will try to revive it and will give it a chance. I replanted it in a bigger pot and took it out in my backyard and placed it in a partial sun/shade, dappled sun area. I am very excited and happy because it survived and it is growing on the old wood that seemed dead... it looks very healthy and green. I live in a zone 5, city of Chicago, IL. Now my question is... should I plant it on the ground or leave it in the pot? Should I leave it in the same area? Are these type of hydrangea that are considered house plants to stay indoors for the winter or will it survive outdoors if planted on the ground? I would really appreciate your guidance on this.😊

Gift hydrangeas don't usually survive because of how they're forced into blossoming so quickly. From what I'm told, if yours does miraculously survive, keep it indoors. Very few have made it outside in the shade. If it still has the tag, see if it gives "planting instructions". If not, treat it as a house plant.

You can plant outside and it will grow. Cover during freezes. Amd make sure to mulch it well.

I would bring it in if it’s a house hydrangea and keep it near a window and water it often.

Great help - I have stuck 12" branches into potting soil and next year they have rooted - but I like your better. One question - can I bring the covered tray indoors for the winter for the rooting process?

Great info. We never prune our blue hydrangeas and do prune lime lights and Annabelle. Do prune out dead limbs in april/may... we have very full plants. Durham nc

My Virginia Beach garden had 25+ varieties of Hydrangeas - a climbing reached into the canopy of a 100' Poplar. The easiest way to propagate is to properly prune in the Spring, by cutting above the 2 buds, from just above the ground up the branch where ever the plant needs 'forming'. and sticking the trimming into the soil around the Mother plant. The following Spring you'll see well-rooted plants that can be set about the garden, or potted as gifts. If cuttings are taken late-Summer into Fall you'll be cutting off next year's blooms.

Wow there are 25 varieties and so those seeds they sell online those are real? Are those planted by seeds also perennials?

Wow and thank you! Someone is always asking for a piece of my Hydrangeas. For the pass few weeks I had this very project on my mind. First thing on my mind this morning. I'm always trying to propagate plants to either give away or add to my garden. While I have had success with propagation, my method takes months or even season to season. I will try this method today. Again thank you for your precise instructions. And your garden is beautiful!! Exactly what I'm trying to do.

Be careful with that most plants have patents and its illegal to reproduce the plant. I've heard of some people getting jail time for just that.

@@brentmichael4770 not “most plants” only plants that have been created/reproduce asexually can be patented. Also nothing that grows from tubbers can be patented.

Hi Kelly, you've got some raging fungal things going on with that bush ( the dark brown spots on leaves) Not being critical, just saying incase you never noticed. Love your vid and thanks for sharing. I like the chunky root balls you get with your cuttings. Cheers from an Aussie chick.

Also I have a hydrangea it was at a home we purchased 10 years ago. It was blooming beautiful. The next 8 years nothing. I checked the soil all was good. It was beautiful green plant each summer. The last 2 years has only one bloom on the plant. I contacted a master gardener and they were stumped . I have used hydrangeas fertilizer as per directions etc. Any suggestions on getting it to bloom? Thanks in advance.
