HOW TO PROPAGATE SALVIA ‘AMISTAD’

Salvias are such fabulous plants and they are super easy to propagate in water.
This is a great and quick way of creating more plants for free, especially if you like salvias.
Your cuttings will root within 2-3 weeks.
HOW AND WHEN TO DO IT
🧚🏻 Cut strong, healthy stems without buds on them in early Autumn
🧚🏻 Take 4 inches long healthy and vigorous stems for rooting.
🧚🏻 Remove all of the leaves from the lower 2 inches of the stem.
WHERE TO STORE YOUR CUTTINGS
🧚🏻 Keep your cuttings in a light, frost free place, but out of direct sun.

I took several cuttings of Amistad last year which was lucky as my plant succumbed to frost. This looks SO much easier so I'll be doing that this year. Thanks for making my life easier

Just joining you. New to gardening and my home only has two boxwoods. I plan to get cuttings for hydrangeas, lavender and boxwoods this summer/fall. Not sure on the salvia about when to take from the water and plant. Would love to see a video this fall for that. My sister in-law has many flowers so I plan to raid her garden later this summer.

Thanks for this video. I thought that this plant was hardy in my zone 7. I will definitely try to overwinter it. You are right. It is in full bloom and we just entered fall. I have tried propagating using info from your channel and had success. Thanks again.

I'm in zone 6b and they've survived for many years. The first hard freeze kills them to the ground, then over the winter the basal leaves start to slowly grow. They shoot up in late February and March, and by April they're blooming. They only survive in the ground, in my experience. The ones I've tried to overwinter in pots have all died.

This is so helpful . Do I have to wait until October to take Amistad cuttings or could I do it earlier ? Also if I root them in water as you have shown what do I do next once they have rooted ? Also should I change the water or leave it until they have rooted ? Thank you

Hello Anya, I live in the states and we have very cold winters. Would these cuttings survive in a dark unheated garage? If I bring them inside should they be in a sunny window?

They need light and dark garage isn’t a good idea. Indoors might be too warm. How cold does it get?

Where do you keep the potted up cuttings over winter? Have lots of baby plants from your videos, all just starting to grow, salvias, hydrangea, erigeron etc. But not sure whether to plant them in the garden or or keep them in pots till next spring? If in pots where should I keep them? Thank you for all your help with growing new plants!

Winter hardy plant just stay outside. Frost hardy are protected in the greenhouse.
