Hi! I’m glad i found your channel. The first week of January 2024, i drove around my neighborhood looking for discarded Christmas trees so I can cut it up and use it as mulch for my rose beds. I found an extremely beautiful spruce tree and couldn’t bear to just chop it up into mulch so i was wondering if it could be propagated and came across your channel and a few others. In the comments section, some people are saying it’s either impossible or really hard to propagate and criticizing you for trying. I want you to know that i cut up the branches (assorted sizes and shapes) and stuck it into a big plastic container full of potting soil. I did not use any rooting powders or anything. I just clipped off the branches and stuck it in soil. Then i placed the pot into a clear plastic bag and tied it up. It’s jan 21, 2024 today, and the cuttings are still alive; firm, flexible, and green. I was worried it would be too cold for cuttings so i placed it in a sunny spot. That was a big mistake because the taller branches got sun burned and turned brown at the tips, inside the bag. However, all the little cuttings are still alive! 🤞. I’m glad you tried propagating the branches. If I’m successful with the propagation, i will come back later and update my comment.😁

July 2024 update: It’s July now and the xmas tree isn’t dead. All the branch cuttings died but the original xmas tree hasn’t died 😁. I placed it in a water bucket and it’s been there since January. In fact there are baby pine cones growing on the branches. Has anyone seen this or heard of this? There’s no roots forming but the tree isn’t dead and baby pine cones are forming and growing. Can this tree be hydroponically grown in this water bucket?

Spruce happens to be one of the hardest evergreens to propagate from cuttings! You can propagate them easier from seasoned seeds from seed stores. To propagate them from seeds from your backyard trees will take a year just to season the seeds. The easiest evergreen to propagate is the emerald arborvitae.
@Judgmental_Cat
@Judgmental_Cat 2 жыл бұрын
However arborvitae isn’t very hardy so if you live in cold, windy, and possibly harsh winters then its not the best thing to grow. It does enjoy its moisture so the cold air can easily dry it out if your not on top of the moisture game

Hi Parampreet, So unfortunately the experiment failed 😒. The cuttings stayed green up until last week. And I was very hopeful but there was no new growth on them. And I guess now it became too hot (over 100F°) and they started to turn brown. When I pulled them out, there was not a single root. But I am still optimistic and I will try it again in September, to give it more time and different soil, conditions.

@RCCRAYZ
@RCCRAYZ 2 жыл бұрын
You need to use coarse sand and keep in total shade, "no sun at all" only indirect light, and dont let them totally dry out and dont keep them soaking wet. Also when you do any kind of pine cuttings, you need a little piece of the main branch the cutting comes off of, so like the previous years growth, coming off the bottom of were you cut it off. Its better to tear it off like that then cutting. Then it will callous, and then it will grow roots. Evergreens are really one of the easiest hardwoods to root because they dont loose as much water.

Thank you for being brave enough to put this out there. My first reaction was, "if she can do it, so can I". Only recently did I learn that Spruce can be rooted from cuttings. For the past 6 years I have been trying to do it from seed (98% crop failure) & by grafting (100% crop failure) using online videos. Your video might be the method that works for me. It looks a bit wintery in your video. Could you please specify if the best time is late autumn, winter or early spring.

@@diegoclipstv9176 Thanks for replying. Arborvitae are one of the hardest things to grow in my region. Yet, Emerald is a big seller. About 95% of those planted never make it through the first winter. But, I've had good luck with Golden Globe variety,iï and now testing a new variety called Skybound. I will try rooting some cuttings. Maybe success with that will inspire me to try something harder! Spruce from cuttings is of particular interest because I have 2 very rare types that cannot be purchased anywhere. Spruce grow well here. It is always good to make some copies of any rare species in case the original trees perish. One of my rare ones has attractive cascading branches. The other has golden needles in winter, lime green in summer. Since I wrote my first comment, I found an article with a great deal of detail on how to root spruce cuttings. It is as you've said, requiring special soil prep and chemicals. Too late for this year though; it advised taking cuttings in early summer.

I don't see how these cuttings are going to take, everything you are doing goes against successful rooting like using cuttings from old wood. Cuttings should be taken from new growth. I know it can be done as the fir saplings i buy have definitely been taking from cuttings. Also garden soil is not ideal to use as there are multiple fungi that can stop rooting, you should be using 50:50 fine compost: perlite

why make a video about a topic you know nothing about. leading lots of people through the process of failure. getting conifers to root from cuttings is hard and typically not industry standards. cuttings should be semi hard wood taken in mid summer. maintaining ideal humidity in the air and soil is required. I suggest watchers purchase seed from reputable seed dealers like Scheffields Seed.

Why? Is simply because optimistic gardeners like me like to experiment and try new things. Inspire others to try new things. Hope. It’s not always the final product what people garden. Thanks for watching.
