There's no risk of *overcharging* pretty much any piece of tech nowadays, but leaving something a lithium battery stuck at 100% for a long period of time will reduce the longevity just a bit. Optimized battery charging is better, but only in perfect scenarios, as in you have a routine schedule that the phone can learn from. Maybe the newer iPhones are smarter, but my iPhone XS struggled with my schedule as it bounced back and forth. It would be in the habit of charging my phone fully almost 3 hours before I was ready to unplug it and start my day, most likely because I would occasionally wake up and use it for a bit before going back to sleep. Either extreme for the battery, 0% or 100% will reduce battery longevity more than it would if it were between 20% and 80%. It would be ideal to remove any case for wireless charging, made for it or not, the further away the coils are, the harder they have to work to provide that power, increasing heat output. Batteries aren't the biggest fan of heat, and will lose longevity faster if they are subjected to higher temperatures. A bit of extra heat is usually fine, but less is better. Don't leave your phone in the sun, and if the phone is particularly warm, avoid charging it until it cools down, as charging will be less efficient in addition to it putting more heat into the phone. And apps in the background do use some resources, particularly without low power mode enabled. Apple is good at reducing the amount of power they use, but they still do use resources to remain loaded. Unless you're opening an app frequently, there's no harm in clearing out your app switcher on occasion to remove apps you haven't used in a while. It's like starting your car, if you're not stopping and going frequently, turn it off, but if you're in stop and go traffic, you'll use more gas starting the engine multiple times than you would just leaving it on.

I would say if you care about extending battery life then you definitely should keep the battery around 20-80 all through out the day. It is also what “Optimized Charging” is trying to do - limit the phone at 80 and then top the last 20 up right before you unplug it. The last 20% will definitely push more stress into the battery and of course this is somewhat unpractical for some users so ultilizing IOS feature is totally fine.

If you implied that having the phone plugged in and charged to a 100% is no problem, being that the phone is designed to stop charging at a 100… then what use is the “optimized charging” that keeps the percentage at 80% before you pick it up?
@00SNIVY003 жыл бұрын
There's no risk of overcharging your phone like there used to be with older batteries, so you're not going to cause a fire by leaving it plugged in, but leaving a lithium battery dead or fully charged for a long period of time will decrease its longevity bit by bit. Optimized charging learns from your schedule and will keep the phone at 80% until you're about to wake up, then it will charge up to 100% by the time you're ready to unplug it, thus reducing the time that the battery spends fully charged.
@RVNmax3 жыл бұрын
Basically what superfraggi... said. But the reason is that when the battery is near full charge or near empty, the charge is unbalanced and this is where the battery is under the highest amount of stress. So it would be ideal to keep the battery within the range of 20% to 80% charge to reduce the risk of battery expansion and reduction in performance.
@iwillnoteatzebugs2 жыл бұрын
Because while yes the iphone stops charging at 100% the problem is , it can happen that while you sleep 8 hours, your phone goes to 100% in 3 hours , now in the 5 hours left it can drop to 99% and the iphone starts charging again, that s called trickle charging which puts stress on your battery. So yhe optimized charging tries to prevent this behaviour basicly

well, from what i know, leaving your phone at night will not significantly damage your battery but it's kinda wrong to say it won't ever. optimized battery charging helps but if you have an irregular sleep pattern like me, it won't do much. the thing is; these lithium batteries are designed to constantly work. the ideal percentages for the battery's health is generally around 50% or at least between 40-80%. i'm only talking for the extra careful people out here though. since leaving the phone on charge while sleeping keeps it always at 100%, it might very very very slightly fasten up your battery degradation. it's still better to keep your phone off charge while sleeping, but if you prefer not to do so, like i said, it probably won't do a visible damage at all. at the end of the day, it's perfectly normal for a battery to degrade to 80% health in 2 years.

Funny how I've seen in other videos people say that actually leaving the apps open is the myth, and the actual fact is that apps can get into loops where they keep working on random stuff and cannot stop due to bad coding or general software version issues (this increases in probability the more apps you have open), and these loops will cause resources to be constatly devoted. I have seen this on my iPhone 7 with many applications. Honestly, I don't even know what to believe these days.

While it’s less noticeable than it used to be, having apps up and running does use power, as well as bandwidth if they’re connected or constantly reestablishing connection as you move from location to location through your day. Thank you sm!! I have an iPhone 6s rn and the battery health is really low, so I’m getting the iPhone 11 soon! I’ve always charged my phone overnight so I thought that was the problem but it’s not, so thanks! Once I get my new iPhone I will make sure to take care of the battery health a lot more
@marcor58863 жыл бұрын
Imho you may have ruined the battery by charging it overnight, maybe because of an older battery design or older software and I would not charge overnight a new phone. Charge it before going to bed even if it’s not dead and unplug it before you sleep
@J_Games_And_More72162 жыл бұрын
@@marcor5886 that’s what I thought of doing but instead I’ve done it since the morning since I leave it around 60 percent and use the rest in the morning which isn’t good plus I noticed how my battery went down a few percent when I wasn’t using it for about 2 hours 4 percent of it I’d gone is that normal I already been having an iPhone 11 a little since before my birthday back in autumn of 2020 and now I can only use it for a few hours if it’s about 60 percent before it goes to 25 percent which is where I have been charging it and all my other devices then stopping since 95 percent

@@J_Games_And_More7216 I've charged my phone overnight and this doesn't ruin the battery (if you turn on the optimized mode in the settings). I usually charge it from 40% up to 90-95% during the day and it's ok. I also noticed that the battery level drops by a few % when idle and don't know if that's normal.

I dont know why you havent mentioned the ff: -Dont charge your phone all the time to 100% only charge it up to 90-95% most of the time -As much as possible when your battery reaches 35% you should already charge it because once you let your battery go down to below 30 or 20% the battery life is decreasing. -Lastly, upgrading to latest IOS affects battery health as well.
@realt43312 жыл бұрын
-why? -why? -updating OS is necessary most of the time. Battery health status on the setting is just a number and sometimes inaccurate. The most important number is the cycle count, not battery health.

Charging over night isn’t good for a battery though. It’s best to keep your phone between 20-80% when you can, once you hit 80%, the last 20% puts a lot of “pressure” on the battery and degrades it faster. Hence the reason why Apple added the battery optimization setting to stop at 80 until you wake up.

Also apps do gradually get larger over time with newer versions in terms of how much storage and RAM they require. So if you have an older IPhone with only 2GB of Ram then it might mostly automatically close the last app you were using in the background after a few seconds of the device being locked while it will also close the last app you were in while it’s loading another app you switched to. This is also another contributor to bad battery life on older IPhones on top of the ageing batteries.
@Ryan-wc8wm3 жыл бұрын
not really an issue. the iphone has another feature where the first 3-4 apps are ram users but the rest of the apps open are sitting in a non ram using state. so you don't have to worry
@Techno-Universal3 жыл бұрын
@@Ryan-wc8wm Okay well it’s mainly sort of an issue on my current IPhone 8 as on the latest public version of IOS 15 my phone mostly has to completely relaunch apps whenever I switch to them. They will also often get fully closed in the background after a few seconds of my phone being locked to save on battery however apps frequently relaunching does drain my battery quite a bit so it could be a problem on my specific device or it seems like it’s relaunching apps when they are loading from RAM! :)
@Ryan-wc8wm3 жыл бұрын
@@Techno-Universal well yeah. it's a different story with iPhone 8. I didn't mention that the ram feature is for the newest models in the 11, 12 and 13. its NOT and ios update. sorry for the confusion
@Techno-Universal3 жыл бұрын
@@Ryan-wc8wm Okay I guess in that case the RAM management issue would effect anyone with an older device on IOS 15 that has only 2GB of RAM however it’s still possible that an old battery could be making the issue worse due to the device not wanting to hold anything open that’s not running in the RAM when locked. Of course it should improve once I get a new battery for my phone sometime early next year as my battery health is at 80% and the device is almost three years old. At least my phone can still charge extremely quickly on a third party 18W USB-C charger without getting very warm which is quite handy and better then wireless charging! :)
@Ryan-wc8wm3 жыл бұрын
@@Techno-Universal I’m assume that too. Making the feature an iOS feature could effect older phones that have less ram. Battery could be a factor, but if you don’t have an 11, 12 or 13 I would suggest closing SOME off your apps.

@westsiderio37144 жыл бұрын
It’s not good to have background app refresh on.
@nishantnair27123 жыл бұрын
Nope. Background app refresh is a way for the app to receive data (via its servers) even when its backgrounded. Meaning it has nothing to do with app getting reloaded. If the app developers have not used this feature properly, the app might use more of your battery, but apple blocks the apps running too much in the background. So you don’t need to worry.

The “don’t charge your phone overnight” is a myth as most phones now cut off the charging voltage as soon as the battery hits 100% capacity so it will not affect the battery.
