I generally put baby oil in my ears for several days to soften the wax up then when i shower i use one of those little bellows blowers that you blast dust off cameras, as long as it is one of the type where the top of it can be pulled off. I pull it off then fill it with warm water, stick the top on and blast away but not too hard as it can dislodge the crystals in the ears that affect balance. Its very productive watching the wax run down the body, but the shower cleans you up double quick.

I've never stuck any cotton swabs in my ears. I'm glad to know that's not beneficial and only makes it worse. Pfft
