I know a guy that drove 100 miles to work everyday each way and it would get 300,000 miles on a Chevy and still have the original brakes on it. He took it in to get the brakes replaced and they told him he didn't need brakes. He told them it had 300,000 miles and he wanted new brakes. These are cars not exactly known for longevity but the type of miles made all the difference.

@@TonyEG6 Another point to add to that. If a cap was recently replaced, you would most likely be able to spot it. Even if the oil was frequently changed, the cap would still show signs of wear, such as grip wear, print fading, staining, ect. @TheComputec8 жыл бұрын
The good thing about these tips is that it is almost impossible to judge a car with high mileage in any other way unless you take it in for a Full Forensic inspection. The reason that highway miles are "better miles" to have on your clock are quite simple and logical Highways typically have better road surfaces with fewer potholes and camber shifts, so your suspension doesn't take such a beating compared to city and suburban streets and country roads and tracks Highway driving "typically" is more smooth and requires less gear changes so your transmission has less wear Highway driving should put less pressure on your braking system as you will brake less often and less sharply Highway driving reduces wear on your interior as most highway miles vehicles will be solo occupied... less scuffs on the seats, broken speaker grills, wear on seatbelts and interior gadgets Highway miles cars are usually business maintained so will get more regular maintenance as they are essential tools for the users job and they will in most cases have been serviced at main dealers and at any cost... If you aren't paying for the repairs and servicing out of your own pocket you are not going to feel the need to buy budget or cut corners and use back street garages These are great tips that while not proving or disproving a sellers claims definitively, should give you a great indication of its history

check how smoothy the driver's door closes and lines up, looking at both the lines from the side of the car and if the door is flush against the roof and side, also if the door handles are loose and very easy to operate that may indicate frequent stops meaning lack of long distance (highway) miles.. same goes for the shifter button/stick shift if it's super easy to push that means many gears changes which doesn't happen on highways.

Good information. One point of conflict is the statement about one headlight looking new and the other really worn or old (sorry I don't remember the exact phrase, but means the same) and saying that means it has been in an accident and to walk away. That does not mean it has been in an accident! It certainly may mean that but it also may just mean that someone had tried doing some restoration of the one headlight and never got to the other or the newer one got hit by a child with a hammer (ask me how I know) or a rock and cracked the lens so they replaced just the one light. I still liked it though and keep up the good work.

I would dispute some of what you are saying. I commute to work mostly on the highway but wash my car by hand, and I hose off the radiator so bugs don't build up. You don't want all that crap on there because too much will affect the cooling ability. I also take great care to polish off the bugs from the front. I do not want to drive a car that looks like that. If it gets to that point I'll get it repainted. As for the seat belt, if there is little wear on it that could mean the drive did not use the seatbelt like they should have. Do not assume it indicates highway miles.
@jcrnda6 жыл бұрын
Greg makes sense but there are other things to check, too. In the cabin almost of them are around driver's seat. Check for ignition key scratches (in older cars of course) - too many will tell how abused the car was; check for buttons wear on the radio, driver's seat wear. Generally you choose between nice-looking hood and radiator and abused car and a chipped hood in a car that has 4 times more life left in it even with three times more mileage even if both cars have been serviced religiously. If I drive for three hours daily at 65 mph - that's around 100 miles and back - I may use brakes only once. 200 miles in the city? That would be 4-6 days getting through traffic, getting in and out of the car, etc. That's like 10 times worse.

It is all original never needing any major repairs. The transmission has never been rebuilt and the engine has never even had the valve cover taken off. Another great informative video. Very good tips on what to look for in purchasing used high-mileage vehicles. Its a jungle out there with more junk than booty. But if you do your homework, know what you are buying, know its value, and most importantly, research the year, make, and model based on its reliability, recalls, engineering, and performance, you'll stand a better chance of years of enjoyment from a wise purchase.

I'm just a lil scared of highway. I try to avoid when possible. I have bad habit of speeding. I'm blind in 1 eye. Bikers drive nuts almost always causing wrecks. I feel it burns much more gas especially considering i drive a v6

another way is miles per hours driven... If your vehicle has an hour meter My 2001 Silverado does,... you just have to know the trick... Divide the hours driven into how many miles on the odometer... The higher the number the more highway miles driven...

The cool thing about these is that all of these points apply to electric cars too but in those cars highway miles means worn battery if not replaced but everything else seems like it should apply just like gas cars.

Seat wear is a big indicator in my opinion. I had my mind set on a Lexus LS 430 until I saw the seat bolster wore down and frayed seat belt. Car was from Hawaii, which was a red flag. Would you steer away from a Hybrid 4cyl with 20k miles and a fraying seat belt?

The biggest one to look at is the steering wheel. If its one of those fake leather wrapped types, that stuff doesn't hold up well to the constant turning and spinning around you get in the city and will peel apart and flake off in your hands. If its one of those cheaper matte rubber ones, those will typically start to lose their texture and go smooth or even glossy.
