I know a guy that drove 100 miles to work everyday each way and it would get 300,000 miles on a Chevy and still have the original brakes on it. He took it in to get the brakes replaced and they told him he didn't need brakes. He told them it had 300,000 miles and he wanted new brakes. These are cars not exactly known for longevity but the type of miles made all the difference.

The good thing about these tips is that it is almost impossible to judge a car with high mileage in any other way unless you take it in for a Full Forensic inspection. The reason that highway miles are "better miles" to have on your clock are quite simple and logical Highways typically have better road surfaces with fewer potholes and camber shifts, so your suspension doesn't take such a beating compared to city and suburban streets and country roads and tracks Highway driving "typically" is more smooth and requires less gear changes so your transmission has less wear Highway driving should put less pressure on your braking system as you will brake less often and less sharply Highway driving reduces wear on your interior as most highway miles vehicles will be solo occupied... less scuffs on the seats, broken speaker grills, wear on seatbelts and interior gadgets Highway miles cars are usually business maintained so will get more regular maintenance as they are essential tools for the users job and they will in most cases have been serviced at main dealers and at any cost... If you aren't paying for the repairs and servicing out of your own pocket you are not going to feel the need to buy budget or cut corners and use back street garages These are great tips that while not proving or disproving a sellers claims definitively, should give you a great indication of its history

Also, it takes a lot less horsepower and torque to keep the vehicle at 70 mph then to accelerate from a dead stop. Highway means less strain on the engine.

@@TonyEG6 Another point to add to that. If a cap was recently replaced, you would most likely be able to spot it. Even if the oil was frequently changed, the cap would still show signs of wear, such as grip wear, print fading, staining, ect. A brand new cap would stick out like a sore thumb especially on a car with this many miles. Highway or city.

Good tips, alot of this is a testament more to Toyota build quality than it is City vs Highway IMO. For example, Toyota engineers bought back a 1 million mile Tundra from a customer that was a driver for the oil industry. They were most amazed by the condition of the seats as they were near perfect even after all of that time someone was sitting in them.

Brake pedal - worn right where you said it would be, no seatbelt wear but they might be one of those individuals who just didn't wear it, none of that beautiful road rash and pristine radiator fins - no bugs. Lots of red flags and definitely DEFINITELY city miles. Thanks alot, CarAngel!

All these tips checked out, and the car still drives like a top. I do keep it in a garage. I will have to disagree with all these, except for the brake pedal cover. Here's my tips: - Driver's seat side bolsters - both the upper and the bottom one. The more the times the driver got inside the car - such as for short trips, the more there will be wear on these parts of the seat. Very easy to see, first thing to look at. - Steering wheel wear - driving mostly highway miles, causes very little wear on the upper part of the steering wheel. Opposite for short city distances. Moreover, many drivers have one or more rings on their fingers - these cause deep wear on the steering wheel so the worse it is this wear means lots of turns in city driving - Transmission selector knob - harder to see, but city driving means more shifting into D P R so more surface scratches or leather wear - Carpet wear under the gas pedal - also more tricky but in city driving more chances the heel of the shoes has rubbed more into the carpet caused a wear area right under the gas pedal By the way, all these tips are gold when going to see a suspiciously low miles car with a lot of wear in these areas. Digital odometers can be rolled back. Always buy a car with paper work and follow the miles marked on various garage visits - ultimately, grab the VIN and call a dealer, they may give you valuable information if the car was serviced at one of their locations.
@justinshankle

Agree with these except the wear on top of steering wheel. I always drive one handed and my hand rests on top of wheel so it gets worn out quickly there, regardless of nearly all highway miles.

check how smoothy the driver's door closes and lines up, looking at both the lines from the side of the car and if the door is flush against the roof and side, also if the door handles are loose and very easy to operate that may indicate frequent stops meaning lack of long distance (highway) miles.. same goes for the shifter button/stick shift if it's super easy to push that means many gears changes which doesn't happen on highways.

I would dispute some of what you are saying. I commute to work mostly on the highway but wash my car by hand, and I hose off the radiator so bugs don't build up. You don't want all that crap on there because too much will affect the cooling ability. I also take great care to polish off the bugs from the front. I do not want to drive a car that looks like that. If it gets to that point I'll get it repainted. As for the seat belt, if there is little wear on it that could mean the drive did not use the seatbelt like they should have. Do not assume it indicates highway miles.

Greg makes sense but there are other things to check, too. In the cabin almost of them are around driver's seat. Check for ignition key scratches (in older cars of course) - too many will tell how abused the car was; check for buttons wear on the radio, driver's seat wear. Generally you choose between nice-looking hood and radiator and abused car and a chipped hood in a car that has 4 times more life left in it even with three times more mileage even if both cars have been serviced religiously. If I drive for three hours daily at 65 mph - that's around 100 miles and back - I may use brakes only once. 200 miles in the city? That would be 4-6 days getting through traffic, getting in and out of the car, etc. That's like 10 times worse.

I just bought a 2010 Honda Insight hybrid with about 170k miles. Drives like it has 70,000 miles since most of them were highway. Has all the evidence you pointed out like the rock chips in front, etc.

Another great informative video. Very good tips on what to look for in purchasing used high-mileage vehicles. Its a jungle out there with more junk than booty. But if you do your homework, know what you are buying, know its value, and most importantly, research the year, make, and model based on its reliability, recalls, engineering, and performance, you'll stand a better chance of years of enjoyment from a wise purchase.

Good information. One point of conflict is the statement about one headlight looking new and the other really worn or old (sorry I don't remember the exact phrase, but means the same) and saying that means it has been in an accident and to walk away. That does not mean it has been in an accident! It certainly may mean that but it also may just mean that someone had tried doing some restoration of the one headlight and never got to the other or the newer one got hit by a child with a hammer (ask me how I know) or a rock and cracked the lens so they replaced just the one light. I still liked it though and keep up the good work.

The condition of the brake pedal doesn't always prove as much as you think. I used to work for a VW/Audi Dealership and we replaced the brake pedal rubber (and clutch pedal rubber) as a maintenance item when cars came in for service.

I discovered my BMW F10 5 series inline 6 cylinder engine car has 178k miles of mostly 95% highway miles. The car looks in excellent condition, runs amazing and idles perfect. Interior is in mint condition, exterior looks very great. The engine is very clean as the whole car look beautiful all around! 178k would be equal to about 85k to 90k mile city car!

I’ve had Asian cars and American. While both are reliable and will run easy 300K miles if maintained personally I have had the best luck with older Volvo’s. I’ve had a few with over 400K miles and never any major repairs needed beyond normal maintenance. Currently my daily driver is a 1992 740 Volvo with 415K miles. It’s been in my family since new. It is all original never needing any major repairs. The transmission has never been rebuilt and the engine has never even had the valve cover taken off. I have driven it cross country and will be heading out this weekend on a 3000 mile round trip vacation. These cars in my opinion are the best bang for your buck. A lower mileage Volvo like mine in great condition can be bought for under $3K.

The biggest one to look at is the steering wheel. If its one of those fake leather wrapped types, that stuff doesn't hold up well to the constant turning and spinning around you get in the city and will peel apart and flake off in your hands. If its one of those cheaper matte rubber ones, those will typically start to lose their texture and go smooth or even glossy.
