I have the same issue with one of my cattle dogs! I have sisters from the same litter. Gorda, best dog ever. Amazing recall, always right at my heels when I’m trail running, not aggressive whatsoever with dogs or people, just literally the absolute BEST. I never even had to train her, she just gets it. Her sister tho….. nah. She’s so sweet and smart, but BOY does she bully dogs. If she smells any type of weakness in them, she’s just at them like they’re cattle. If they stand up to her and fight back, she’s okay with them 🙄🙄 I’m kinda at a loss on what to do with her behavior. I’m not sure if she’s genuinely aggressive or if she’s just a jerk who needs to be put into her place by a bigger dog.

I finally have found a trainer I can truly look up to and learn from. After starting purely compulsion, then venturing into the R+ world only, I had to find myself over and over again as a trainer. And now I have found the trainer who I can truly vibe with who is actually balanced and fair. Hopefully one day I can meet him and learn from him and pick his brain! This guy has truly made a huge impact on me as a dog trainer and I couldn’t be more grateful

I've also debated using an e collar on my small dog whose a teddy roosevent terrier. He may be small, but he's still a hunting breed, and he's superr smart and clever. He loves to please but also will for sure walk over you if allowed to. I haven't taught heel outside and i rlly should. I definitely need to start with a slip lead at least to teach him right from wrong, and more treats to truly let him know what i do expect of him. So much to learn and i love it!!

The confusion around whether or not to use e-collar training or prongs etc is overwhelming. I absolutely love your videos and your training approach. As a new handler I am so confused by the divide between trainer ideology. I just want to do what’s best for my dog.

When I started 4 months ago, I never knew about the ideologies. I was lucky enough to not being confused because it all made sense with my dog - Bull Arab 65kg /120lb - he behaviour need to change. I watched many videos and eventually subscribed to Toms Club and Robert Cabral. The videos were well worth it and cemented my thoughts of the ideology. I highly recommend subscribing (even for a month) and you can stop the confusion - either Balnced training vs Positive reinforcment only. It becomes an easy decision in my opinion - hope this helps you in your journey

Hi thanks for your videos it’s helped with my Rottweiler puppy. Just a little confused as to the recall. After the process of using treats, slip leash , prong collars and e collars - do you eventually phase out those tools at some point ? Is the goal to get to a point where e collars and treats aren’t needed anymore for recalls ?
@pickles_871
@pickles_871 Жыл бұрын
I think it honestly depends on the dog, but in most cases the training tools should be weaned off. But “tune ups” may always be necessary and beneficial. As of e collars, think of them like a seat belt. So you wouldn’t stop using a seat belt just because you understand the concept of it.

Yes. Watch a Tom Davis prong collar video. It will explain this. Also your puppy may not need a prong that early. I suggest trying a lot more reinforcement methods first with that puppy. And maybe a slip leash. But a prong can be a lot of pressure for some dogs and I wouldn’t need want your pup to shut down cause you started using it at the beginning of their training.

thank you for the response! I love your balanced approach to dog training! I find that it’s extremely difficult to find dog training videos featuring smaller dogs and their specific needs like a yorkie’s sensitive neck. It’s nice to know that a lot of the techniques should translate over. I see you use slip leashes and prong collars on larger dogs in training dogs to walk without pulling etc. would you suggest the same technique also work for yorkies in light of their sensitive tracheas?

Yes but how do you stop the collar not becoming the cue to come rather than the call or whistle. At some stage you would need to fade the e collar rather than have to rely on it perminantly
@jordancrowe87
@jordancrowe87 Жыл бұрын
You answered your own question. You fade it out over time. The dog learns to come without needing the e-collar, but having the e-collar there as a back up in case of distractions, like loud noises and lots of people or other animals is helpful.
@sallyhollis47
@sallyhollis47 Жыл бұрын
@@jordancrowe87 having just been to a Michael Ellis 3 day seminar that really is not the message he was imparting - his dogs have e collars on (but not in use) since puppy hood and then introduced to the use of them later in training. He was quite concerned that the continual use of very low level stimulation in training COULD lead to the dog becoming conditioned to the low level stimulation - say for ‘come’ - as the cue rather than the verbal or signal command. Then you have your dog fully relied on the e collar stimulation as the cue and would be very hard to fade.
@jordancrowe87
@jordancrowe87 Жыл бұрын
I can't speak to what he says. I just know from my own personal experience with my working dog, where we started out with a leash and then using an e-collar for recall, and now I can use a verbal cue, a whistle, or a stem from the e-collar for recall.@@sallyhollis47
@jordancrowe87
@jordancrowe87 Жыл бұрын
Also, my dog has an e-collar on all day long. I would say 99.9% of the time I don't need to use it. I really only use it when we are working on a new task that I am teaching her during her daily training sessions.@@sallyhollis47

If the collar is only used at low levels, ie the dog just feels a "stimulation" what's the difference between that and say a dog whistle which to the dog would be a "stimulation." If this is the case the e collar is rather an expensive dog whistle
@Missfoxtooyou
@Missfoxtooyou Жыл бұрын
Not all dogs have the ability to hear, and if a whistle had a strong stimulation in high level distractions which could be life threatening, then e collars would not exist. The low levels are an introduction to learn to shut it off, as well it’s paired to the owners voice.
@JanSilins
@JanSilins Жыл бұрын
@@Missfoxtooyou Most dogs are not deaf/hard of hearing and there is no mention with e training that it’s targeted at deaf/hard of hearing dogs, just ordinary dogs. I understand that up to around 10 (or a device calibrated from 1 to 100) the sensation is mild, not unpleasant, a sort of tingle, it’s around 60 to 80 volts. Above that the sensation becomes progressively unpleasant and at maximum settings it will be anything between 1,500 to 3,000 volts. So if the dog is sufficiently distracted that it will not respond to the low level (or a dog whistle) then I suppose the idea is to raise the level at which it will be definitely unpleasant to the dog at which it will respond, simply because the sensation is unpleasant and strong. It may obey the command or simply stop doing whatever it was not supposed to do. But the latest scientific evidence is that this will raise the overall anxiety of the dog. A human will do things to avoid the unpleasant sensation and is able to work out mentally what that is, in the same way as a boy in a school that has corporal punishment can work out what behaviours to avoid, and therefore relax instead of being fearful of when he may get caned. But a dog may not have that capacity. It lives in the moment and will respond to commands provided they are repeated many times for these to become habit for the dog. So that would entail giving the dog a major distraction, giving the command and setting the e collar to high settings and doing this many times so the dog “get’s it.” In reality the dog will remember the unpleasant sensations and instead of relaxing and behaving, will become more fearsome and anxious. I am afraid it’s down to a poor leadership relationship with the dog if the dog does not obey a command when distracted. If you think about leadership relationships, in the most strongest ones people will be prepared to die for their leader. So if your dog does not obey your recall in all situations, keep it on a lead!
@Missfoxtooyou
@Missfoxtooyou Жыл бұрын
@@JanSilins I would love to read the articles as well their sources and experiences of personally using an e collar. A lot of scientists are giving out false information on a tool they have never used. What was the variable when they “conducted this research”. Was the dog stable, nervous, poor genetics, or neutral? What was the environment like? What units of e collars did they PERSONALLY use? K9 police use the e collars here as well in the States. I respect that you may not need or want to use a tool. But do not minimize what it can do for another handler. I 100% agree a relationship with a dog and handler are the above else the most important. But this is an animal, and it’s going to act on its desires, which could mean going off to chase a wild animal while on a hike or insert various scenarios. You have led previous comments that minimize this tool, it’s not for you and that’s okay. Lastly, I do not need you to try to mansplain the uncomfortable feeling the dog may receive at higher levels nor did I say most dogs are deaf or hard of hearing. But a lot of dogs that are unable to hear have been able to benefit from the stimulation of a e collar vs a “expensive dog whistle” .
@juliamagnusson8670
@juliamagnusson8670 Жыл бұрын
The thing with the e-collar is it's very black & white and easier to be precise. You want it to shut off the second the dog does the command. Blowing in a whistle until that point can be difficult if the dog is distracted. Also, what happens if someone else is blowing a whistle? How will the dog know the difference?
@jackymx6509
@jackymx6509 Жыл бұрын
If something is getting your dog‘s attention (say your dog has a high prey drive and he sees a squirrel ir he‘s reactive and is triggered by another dog) a dog‘s hearing can get very selective. He would be too much in the zone to actually react to your voice and even a whistle wouldn‘t get him out of that. Since dogs are very tactile animals (touch is huge for them and so much more effective than just sound) they will respond so much better to the eCollar. I don‘t think a whistle is bad, they are just different and the eCollar is more reliable.
