Just wanted to stop by and say how wonderful this dogtra #nobaddogs edition is. I've been working with my GSD on the mini educator and have had butt loads of issues and got this dogtra in the mail today and we had an hour training session. NIGHT AND DAY. If anyone is in the market for one I'd seriously skip the other brand and at least go for the dogtra and i'd specifically recommend tom's because of the strap and features. #NOBADDOGS

Yeah I got mine in the mail today too actually. Wish I could say the experience had been better. Quite apparent that it would work well when it works. There just wasn't any consistency to my dog feeling the shock. Pretty sure the issue is his hair is too thick. So I just ordered the 3/4" replacement prongs, as a bunch of people said this helped with their thick haired dogs. So hopefully this brings some consistency. Will update in a couple days. Also, the magnet on/off system I think should be replaced. A push button on/off system would be better. With the current system, I get the collar turned on and then it turns itself off as I'm moving the handset away from the collar. It works to turn the collar on and off from about five inches away. If I have this on my waist band and my dog comes up to me, I could see this potentially turning off without the owners knowledge. Then what happens when your dog thinks that baby in the stroller looks like a tasty lunch and you can't buzz him off course?

Thank you Tom! More people need to be educated that e-collars are not bad. I had my deaf Pitbull trained to both hand signals and an e-collar so that I could get his attention no matter what. He was the best dog I've ever owned and was the only one of my dogs I fully trusted off leash anywhere even though he was deaf. I only ever used a level 2 on him for recall and he responded every single time no matter what distractions there were, and he loved children so taking him to the park was a joy. I used vibration setting with hand signals for other commands when he was not next to me. I would totally train another dog with an e-collar and think nothing of it.

I just wanted to say how much of a breakthrough this dogtra e-collar has been for our reactive rescue dog. She really needed that extra tap on her shoulder to regain her focus and work through her insecurities. She already seems so much more calm and confident. Thank you SO MUCH Tom for all of your training videos. There truly are NO BAD DOGS! 🖤

Such a good introduction for e-collar training! It's the MOST humane thing for a dog - they are finally allowed to BE a dog and have FREEDOMS when off leash trained with the e-collar. They get more exercise, naturally get taken out more often by their owners, and can get so many more steps in than dogs that are restricted to a leash. Love it.

With Zak George strongly pushing to have tools banned, it is fantastic to see more videos like this showing people exactly how they are ment to be used and how they should be conditioned. I feel many trainers like Zak only focus on the negative outcome due to wrongful use of a tool vice recognizing the good and seeing that dogs can still be happy and have a positive relationship. Positive reinforcement should always be the first thing. But a tool offers results that +R alone can't achieve as easily. Tools are not abusive unless you make it abusive. Train responsibly and have fun with your best friend. They don't care about the method so long as it's fair and they are enjoying their time.

Completely agree. My dog started with very r+ methods when she was a puppy. When she got to being around 8-10 months we realized she needed more accountability. Bought a prong collar and a dogtra e collar. She is now so nicely trained. Not saying she wasn’t trained before, but those tools helped to hold her known and practiced behaviors to a T. Plus she was worked regularly as a puppy, probably three thru five sessions daily. So don’t says she didn’t know how to do the behaviors and that is why she got e collared. Great tool

Absolutely agree! I used to like Zak's videos too as there are some great tips and I originally always start out that way. But at times tools can be so much help and definitely not painful or creating a negative bond but the complete opposite and the dog will be thankful in the end. Tom is amazing as he is incredibly open-minded showing and working in so many different ways and teaching how to use tools the right way. We had dogs with hunting instinct in the past one of them going missing in a forest running after a deer or bunny. They both had great recall, but not in that moment. It would have been so helpful to have such a collar back then to get his attention and avoid him running off and away. Several different situations where other tools properly used made such a difference in a very positive way that couldn't have been achieved with purely positive reinforcement.

George and his wife work for the Industry and do / $ay what they are told at this point - forget them. They are long gone. Edit, dogs don't live long enough to be afforded years of basic training. Why waste their lives with muddled clarity when it can be so easy and clear. A neighbour of mine has a Dane with lots of reaction issues; he will bark everytime he's out in the yard. The owner has installed shutters and a 9ft colorbond fence yet the barking continues. I can hear he's on a bark collar at times because his barking is stifled somewhat .. yet for yrs he's been nagged by his owner instead of given a single good stim or two to stop him, and us neighbours, leading miserable lives. This has been on-going since 2017 and I'm prepping for court.

Totally agree. I used to like Zak’s videos, but it seems like much of his information now is him just regurgitating science jargon that doesn’t consider real world scenarios. Tom’s video shows that an ecollar can be used in combination with positive training. I don’t think anyone who has felt one of these at a level 4-6 would consider it abusive to the dog. Yet, Zak would tell you it is, and give a scientific summary of why it is.

Excellent video. Sadly people opposed to Ecollars have no idea that they can be turned down and controlled. They only assume that they will only electrocute a dog. A lack of knowledge leads to more people getting that same lack of knowledge l thank you Tom for promoting proper training with the Ecollar. When my dogs see me get the ecollar out they get excited in a positive way and are ready to have fun. It is totally positive for them.

It also doesn't help that many tend to try the cheap models (no-brand import models) which have varying output for the same setting even within the same model line (poor calibration or QAQC process). I switched to the name-brand EZ Educator and found them to be way better in terms of consistency .. and yes, I do test them on myself. I'd assume the Davis line is much of the same.

Thanks Tom. I've gone through 2 cheapo collars with no good effects, at least partly because I don't want to screw my dog up. Just ordered a Dogtra 280C (didn't know there was a Davis version) and this time am determined to do it right. My Schip is a very good girl almost all the time. But she's got the high energy, drive, willfulness and independence of a Schipperke in spades. Every once in a while she just completely blows me off. With the predators we have around here that is never OK.

My dog went to the beach yesterday. She was on her 15 foot long line and a Tom Davis dogtra 280c collar. She was amazing. She ignored all the people and the couple of other dogs we saw. She even ignored the little kids splashing in the water. She got to have her line dropped as we played fetch in a quieter part of the beach. She came back each time with the ball in her mouth. She was running maybe 40-65 feet away from me to fetch the ball. Her leash was dropped that whole time. The one time she decided to bring the ball near my family she got a nic at level four and a reminder to ‘bring it’. She turned right around and brought the ball right to me. She didn’t run to my family again. The reason I didn’t want her going to family is cause our game of fetch is where she has to bring it to the person who tossed the ball. This can eliminate her going to strangers to toss the ball when we are at a crowded area. But she rocked it. She also got to dig in the sand and was therefore super tired when we left the beach. Thank you Tom for such a great informative video on e collars. I never would have started it with my dog if I hadn’t have found your channel. I hope more people can say the same cause it is so nice to have the off leash (or very close to in my case) freedom with a well trained dog.

This cleared up so much for me. I always got confused because you talk about stimulation vs the pager
@ShayanBhattacharyya
@ShayanBhattacharyya Жыл бұрын
Tom, your love for dogs is infectious. Thank you. Couple of practical questions: 1. Working level of stimulation. I own a dogtra 1900s and I’m assuming the levels are roughly similar to 280c. You mentioned you were at level 4 for working but you also mentioned “going higher” during distractions. Can you please share a process so we get the right level every time? How do we know if we are too high? Or not high enough? 2. Length of conditioning period. I appreciate that we are supposed to only use commands the dog already knows and sessions should be short. In this video you mentioned about two weeks of conditioning. You also used the test of three recalls with verbals and 4th without. First time I heard this and I can’t wait to test it tomorrow. So, is that a test we should do before every off leash session? Are there other tests that can increase confidence the dog is truly ready to be off leash? Should we be conditioning in escalating environments of distraction? 3. Nick vs continuous vs pager. I’ve been conditioning on continuous at a very low level (4 to 6, but I’m also wondering if I need to increase because dog isn’t doing commands he does perfectly without e collar). Or maybe the problem is that it’s already too intense and I should move to nick instead? Which one and how do I know? When would I use pager? Is there a specific sequence or button I should consider programming and training just for recall? 4. Boost. You mentioned setting the boost 5 levels above working level. Is that a good rule of thumb? If not, how do I discover boost levdl? And when is appropriate to use this function? And how? Does this change if environment is more distracted? If yes, this is assuming we are still conditioning, right, because I thought I heard you say that once you condition, you don’t use the functionalities day to day. 5. Aversive. You mention that after conditioning, you don’t use the collar. Does conditioning include using boost a few times so the dog knows escalating “e collar pressure” till they respond appropriately? Do you ever use this tool as an aversive? Like if the dog was running towards a car, how old you actually use the e collar (method, level, process etc) for that kind of event? What about a behavior that is undesirable but not that dire (eg playing too rough with another dog)- how would I use the collar in that scenario ? 6. Regression of known behaviors. If the dog was doing basic obedience behaviors excellently and reliably before, but now is a title sloppier with the ecollar, even as using it as recommended with your process, what kinds of potential causes would you look to troubleshoot to understand the underlying root cause? 7. With a prong. There are still many environments where either because of local law or ordinance or courtesy to others, I will still use a leash despite the dog being highly trained. I use a herm springer 2.5 (with backup clip of course 😊; I have a working line German Shepherd) prong. Are there any considerations I should be aware of with ecollar while dog is on leash? It’s still ok for me to use prongs as aversive to deliver corrections? I imagine these may be questions others have so appreciate you considering a response. Thank you for all you do for the pups.

I use an e-collar on my 20 month old service dog in training so I don’t have to have her on leash because her leash gets in the way of performing her tasks. She doesn’t really need it, but I have it for peace of mind. I trained her using this method after watching all your videos on the collar, a ton of Larry Krohn’s videos, and reading Larry’s book four times before I even bought the collar.

@@tomdavisofficial it did! Even prevented him from jumping up when meeting my sister who's stage 4 renal failure and I didn't want her hurt. Saw him getting ready to get the front end upward bound hit him with #4Nic and a verbal phooey and that thought left his mind. I'd been using pager which has worked better than expected but Nic saved the day 😁. Made me look so good to my sister who has trained and bred schutzhund dogs for decades before getting sick. She thinks the "dog in the chain" would make an excellent service dog because of the way he watches me waiting for a command. I'd hide on another side of the house and yell come. When I had two people we would call her, the other person would run somewhere else, and yell come. It worked great. I have a new puppy I'll be working on it with! I forgot the puppy stages and how the know nothing yet 😂 back to basics. We did do the come game in the house first.

@Upstate Canine Academy My boi, Emilio, is a full grown pibble of 8+ years. My biggest concern is his puppy-like inquisitiveness. Having recently moved to a new nice neighborhood that has children and other dogs, I'd rather he not seize the opportunity to squeeze by and get past the open front door to go visiting. Yes, walking him off-leash to the local dog park would be great as well. And perhaps taking him to work with me now and then, as he is getting older, would be fun outings for him. My concern is for his safety FROM others. Not the other way around. I understand, appreciate, and indeed expect that this may take some extra time. He is an "older" dog, after all. But what might the end results be with this training? Can he and I go further than just keeping him close to me? Or is that about all I should realistically expect? He is a very good boi.

Looking into the e collar for my 10 month old pup, some great info here. I’ve never used one and want to make sure we are doing it correctly with him. With a large dog (Bernese mountain and standard poodle mix weighing over 80lbs at 10months) makes it harder to correct when he wants to jump and pull to other dogs. He doesn’t respond well to leash corrections. He also needs work off leash with biting arms to play. We have 3 kids and homeschool so want to train ourselves and have the tools to give him the best life which will hopefully include Off Leah with us out on trails. We are waiting patiently for your e collar to be back in stock to order your training and get things started. Thanks for all that you do!

7:11 the dog is getting vibration according to the audio. But didn't you imply the vibration is for more aggressive corrections (3:10)? I'm confused, vibrate for basic commands and shock for correction or the other way around? Thanks!

I think I need one for my 5yo German shepherd. No matter what collar I use she pulls and chokes herself. My pit mix 6mo puppy can be wild at times but will listen if my other dog isn’t around lol

Yes, absolutely! We have to re-educate bc when you say e collar or remote collar it has negative association with it. I am always very surprised at the misconceptions around them and I pass people who have reactive dogs quite frequently, I was one of them. I can take my dog out and now I know how to handle varying situations and can keep him safe. Win!

Hi Tom! Love your videos!! I have a boxer that went to a board and train. They trained her with the Dogtra Arc which I do like but I wish it had separate settings for the nick and constant that I don’t have to toggle back and forth from nick and constant because the number settings are different for each one. The trainer trained my dog to only use the ecollar when she doesn’t listen. The nick I use mostly when she is in the yard and does something I don’t want her to do. Also I think having a collar with a boost would be beneficial because sometimes it takes me awhile to adjust the setting to bump it up when there is more distraction. A couple times I mistakenly went to high and she yelped which I hate, or the dial moved. I guess a lock option would be nice too.

So bought one and started using it today with conditioning at 6 I’m going to give you an update in 1 week 2 weeks after review Wtfffffffff amazing change my dog and I improved our relationship from a 7/10 to 9/10 best tool ever BUT you need to know what u are doing, hard to use without making any mistakes so follow his videos to avoid some of them my dog was reactive at the park with people, especially guys, now is at 0 reaction she was getting petted by people. How when she would look at some one with her classic look ( I’m about to bark) I would recall her with the collar and then I would put her on heal and approach the person and do some condicionig training Now why did I need the E-collar because when my dog was barking even if she has good recall she was to focused on the person, with the e collar I have that extra control to set her up for success!!!! Inform your self before buying and if u do buy it, make it fun for you and the dog

I have a 1 year old Doberman who ive trained pretty well! He is intact and is REALLY beginning to push boundaries, specifically outside with play. Blowing me off, not outing his toy when i ask him to, etc. We play in a baseball field and up until this point he does a perfect fetch, and return. Now, when I recall, he will ignore me, and test his boundaries until i go get him. All that being said. When using an e collar, would i hold the nick until he returns to me (aftr conditioning and training of course), or until he commits to coming? It always made sense that we hold the stim until an action is completed, but its a relatively long trot back to me. Thanks for any and all help!!!

So if during recall your dog will commit to you, but really likes to do the "top gun flyby" how would you correct that using the collar? When we're inside he'll come right to me, but outside when he's excited he'll just fly right by me.

So the e-collar is basically WiFi leash pressure. In the sense that it's on immediate off when the dog does the command.That's great it finally clicked for me. Thanks a bunch. I trained my first dog years ago he was the best dog ever but he was never off leash. I just took in a blue heeler pup and this dog is a genius. Thanks for your advice can't wait to get him to a point where he can really enjoy himself in some of these Kentucky fields.

Received my collar a couple days ago. Maybe my English Lab’s fur is dense but she doesn’t even register a response until level 7. We train about four times daily at about 15 minutes. I noticed an immediate sharpening up of her place, come, heel, and other basic commands. Now to figure out how to ‘leave it’ on my landscaping.

Great video. Question: I have a Pyrenees Shepard, living in the country. Refuge dog 3 years old, fairly well trained in basics. However, he sometimes takes off after hunting dogs or trucks/ 4x4 coming from the forest with interesting smells. Can an E-collar do anything for that or should I get a GPS, Thanks and again great video.
