You know when you're really used to doing something and for so long that after a while you just think "oh hey, I can actually do this". That's what I thought about reading. I read a lot. I read as much as my schedule allows me in my free time and I read a lot for work. My Law Degree basically consisted of reading, my Master's degree also basically consisted of reading and after a while I thought - well, I must know how to read.
And then I read a book on how to read a book. The book is literally called "how to read a book" and it was written by Mortimer J Adler and Charles Van Doren and it basically blew my mind.

Highlighting interesting and useful parts in a book, and then later adding these parts into a "common book" has been a really nice new habit in my reading and I love it! 😊

Hello! How would I benefit from this method when reading a fictional novel?
@AdemirAlijagic
@AdemirAlijagic 3 жыл бұрын
@@danashaheen5826 There are plenty of interesting parts in most books, fiction or non-fiction. With novels, I personally tend to highlight my own "commentary" to the plot. Many novels have a theme or 'message' they want to get across, and I then highlight these points as I see them. Sometimes I would highlight something funny, interesting, or just fun trivia for later. Other times a book is just not that memorable and I don't find anything noteworthy, and that's fine as well 😊 Enjoy your novel, and have a great day Dana!

Mind-numbing, after 60 years of reading I think I will stick to reading a book for the joy of reading. I think this is aimed at new readers or reading for qualifications. I found the key element to understanding a book is to be aware of the time when it was written and the life of the author. Leo Tolstoy for instance War and Peaceis a book I am reading it for the third time in 40 years and discovering so much more at every reading. Don't forget to actually enjoy the book!

I read "How to Read a Book" this book she reviewed is a instruction on how to read "Great Books" books that have transformed western thought and have been foundational to our understanding. Usually the books referenced were nonfiction books, separate from something like the Bible which would be a different form of reading, something the author points out in the text. There is reading for entertainment and reading for learning/understanding. It's perfectly fine to read for entertainment just as you've decided. This book is really aimed for those who are very interested in abstract ideas more so than interested in traditional literature.

I really struggle with formulating questions while reading a book. because of this find "having a conversation" with my book helps for me. To do this I write comments, questions, and even indicate my motions in the margins of a book. I also include notes for pages I think are relevant or other books or articles I have read. In simple terms, I pretend the word I am reading are my friend talking to me and the margin space is just my responding in turn to the conversation.

My ADHD makes me fly throughout the books I’m able to highlight favorite lines I’m able to look up words and make flash cards to increase my vocabulary. I love you’re gorgeous nails baby. 🤤😍 I recently joined a book club.

Ok, I love your videos! I also love, love, love reading, but my own major doesn't really allows me the type of reading I want to do most of the time, so it's been a long time since I've last deep dove into reading and actually felt really good while doing so, like it heals and fullfils me in a way only book lovers (or bookworms, it better describes myself :D) can experience. Watching these type of videos, full of useful information + bringing a lot of passion into the art of appreciating books, makes me dream of stuffing myself with books and never-ending exploring of new ways to enjoy them! Thank you so much for your dedication in bringing to us excellent quality information. Abraços do Brasil :D

I start at page one and work my way to the end. I make notes in a notebook to note things that interested me and keep a dictionary at hand for unknown words. I'm very opinionated so the author is already working uphill to get my attention to pickup the book and then read it. For novels, hopefully the author has done their job to keep my attention in the book and not wondering off causing me to count the pages to the end or just start skimming over obviously boring uninterested parts. James Patterson and Dan Brown has a way with keeping my attention and usually I can't put their books down until the end.

Understanding a book for me depends on the subject of the book. Take Beyond Good And Evil by F. Nietzsche my problem is knowing when he is actually saying what he means and when he is making fun of other philosophers or ideas. Also for me I have to read Nietzsche very slowly since his writing is packed with a multiplicity of meaning.
