I think its important to recognise that a lot of Bookstubers are also English or literature students/read as part of their job! So many of their read books are required texts or additional study. If you're in school or study something like science it will always be harder to read this much for a host of reasons, so there's no point comparing yourself to people like this! As long as you're consistently getting through your own reading list, the number you tick off doesn't matter

100%. Or if you have a full -time job that does not involve reading books and if you have a ton of responsabilities around your house, could also be hard to hit a high number. So this is super personal and as long as you are able to read what you want, go for it.

Remember you can listen to audiobooks if you want. And don't come at me saying it doesn't count as read, because studies say it actually does. Even if it will never be the same, audiobooks can help you get to read more.
@amelijaceica96173 жыл бұрын
@@ramirez4630 people who say audiobooks don't count are just silly. They are too focused on the aesthetics of reading and not really seeing the real purpose of reading, in my opinion. Ngl it’s just as valid to read 10 books a year than it is for 150 books a year- if you took in and loved those 10 books, then you might have enjoyed those 10 way more than someone who read 150! Quality is way more important than quantity!
@evangelia.nikolaou13 жыл бұрын
I agree I find that Russian books, for example, such as Anna Karenina, War and Peace, or the Idiot, are excellent book but you have to read three hours per day if you want to finish just ONE in two weeks. I do not like how people become obsessed with the number of books they read and not with their quality, or they rush the process to read more. Experience is important as well. You need inputs from life in order to expand your inputs from books. You need to feel, live, laugh, cry, otherwise you will only resonate with people and situations within your bubble. Reading less is sometimes reading more. I do not say not to read every day, I just say 1-2 hours per day is enough. If you read 1-2 hours per day, it's impossible to read that many books, especially if you pick the right books FOR YOU, that can develop YOU. I always pick books that I can read in difficulty because they are the right books for ME. I could easily read some books with easy dialectic, but I prefer those that need time. You need patience to read qualitatively and not quantitatively.

one thing that's helped me get through classics is to see them as regular books, because... that's what they are?? when classics were first published, they weren't seen as a huge piece of classical literature, but as a common book you would find in a bookstore. also, most classics are just people in their early 20s going through an ongoing life crisis because it's impossible to know which period of your life is the middle, i'd say it makes them less intimidating

Hi friends :) I haven’t watched the video yet (I have a lecture I must go to first... I’ll be back lol), so idk if Ruby discussed this, but I wanted to make a quick note that being a bookworm shouldn’t be determined by how many books you read! If you love books but only read one or two when you can that’s totally okay! You are still a bookworm! Don’t ever feel bad if you don’t have the time to read or buy new books. You are still a bookworm! Don’t feel bad if you can’t read for hours at a time, either because you don’t have the time or maybe the attention span to do so. You’re still a bookworm! And this isn’t me hating on Ruby! I think it’s incredible that she’s read so many books. Just please don’t feel like you have to compare yourself! Reading isn’t a competition between people and it doesn’t have to be a competition with yourself. Just go at whatever pace you feel is necessary and don’t feel bad if you’ve haven’t read hundreds of books. Even if you’ve read only a few but those few were incredible, I think that’s a major accomplishment :) With love, A fellow bookworm ❤️🐛 P.s. Instead of reading more books, I think a good goal is to just read more in general, if you don’t want to feel pressured by numbers :) of course it’s fun to see how many books you can read, but that doesn’t equate to how much of a bookworm you are :)
@luna79383 жыл бұрын
Yes! You explain it perfectly! When I read, I sometimes feel like a 3 day or 2 or maybe even a week break from reading. But that doesn’t exactly work it just ends up a one day break, but it’s ok to not read sometimes because you’re a human, we have work, homework, chores etc and that limits how much we can read. :)

I work in a bookshop and I absolutely LOVE when someone comes in, reads one of my staff picks, and buys the book! Thank you for recommending recommendations! When I'm in a slump, I usually go for a graphic novel; they're also great for me to help break up the heaviness of non-fiction. Also, I love thrift books for affordable books! They have $3 paperbacks that saved me a fortune in college. I also love library book sales in normal times. To raise money, libraries (at least in my area of the US) will sometimes sell books really cheaply-- they're usually books that no one has checked out in a long time or books they have excessive multiples of. Of course, there's always checking out and returning books as well.

I've noticed so many youtubers boasting about how many books they read and it left many people discouraged (including me ) but there is somehting fundamentally wrong with this : Reading a book is like going through a journey . It can be good , it can be bad . But you always learn something from it . A single book can forever change how you view something , this is the power of books . I don't track how many books i read , and i don't have a specific time for it . I read when i feel like it , and i always make sure to get the most of the books i read . Remember this : You can read 3 books that completely turn your life upside down , and you can also go through a 100 book then forget everything a few months later. Setting a goal like : i wanna read 75 books this year , will distract you from the actual benefit of reading , you'll be too focused on reaching the goal that you forget to enjoy what you're reading ,let alone benefit from it . That's why IMO some people in the book community are very toxic , it all becomes about how many books you've read instead of how much wisdom you gained . So instead of counting the books you read , rushing to the next book and envying other readers , why don't we just enjoy what we're currently reading , write our own thoughts about it , and do whatever can be applied ??? Take you time when reading books , why the rush ?? Learn the art of "reading fewer books" . Sorry for the long comment , i just wanted to write my thoughts for any lost souls like me . thank you ruby for another awesome video , you're a big inspiration of mine . And sorry for my english .

It's good to see you looking and sounding so much better, Ruby, and this is such a compelling and important vlog you have made. Any student - not just of English Literature - should watch it on repeat, especially if they are struggling in their courses! I confess to being old enough that when on long journeys in my childhood, having a book was the only 'default,' as you describe it. In those days, if you had a mobile phone at all, it just made calls, so having a book was essential. Once, I was on a 9-hour flight to the US that had no inflight entertainment (ah, those were the days!) so I took a four-novel science fiction serial with me, as well as some texts I was studying for A-level. One of them was the play "Translations" by Brian Friel, and the fact that I remember it so well touches upon your point about how to retain what you have read. I remember the texts vividly because of having had them with me and having used them on that unforgettable trip! You speak of the stigma attached to film adaptations. As I see it, the only real negative that may come out of watching a filmed adaptation of a literary work is that one's imagination is dulled in consequence. Fiction channels the imagination of the reader / listener / viewer: as we read Tolkien's descriptions of Middle Earth, we can fashion the landscapes, conjure up the creatures and fill in the colours with our own minds, drawing upon real world experiences as necessary; when we watch one of the film adaptations, we are forced to see the landscape and creatures and colours as imagined by the director, producers, designers, technicians (etc.) thus all the imagining is done for us. That can take away some of the magic of reading the original text, whether we did it before watching or do it after watching. Even so, I can remember watching many an adaptation, in class at school, during both GCSE and A-level English studies, and in many cases it was enormously helpful, fostering greater enthusiasm for the text, and aiding better understanding and interpretation. Indeed, one text we studied was Alan Bleasdale's "Boys from the Blackstuff," which was little more than the published scripts of the television series of that name released in the early 1980s - a rare instance, perhaps, of a literary work coming after a dramatic adaptation rather than before? I hope that many will take heed of your excellent advice and benefit from it!

My tips: 1. Read with others. Find a book circle or just a friend and read the same book and talk about it. 2. If you like an author: Take a look at what she or he do/did like to read. Usually there are people that have made lists, look at interviews or at their Wikipedia page under the section about inspiration and influences. 3. Look at the display-shelf at the library. Usually the librarians are very knowledgeable people that make up very good compilations in connection to current topics. 4. Audio books! There are some wonderful narrators out there. If you are lucky the author is reading the book her/himself. 5. Read with the seasons! Its always a nice thing in spring to read books that takes place during spring. 6. If it's a difficult beginning of the book, try reading it aloud, preferably with a very dramatic narrator voice. ;) 7. Read book-reviews or find a book-tuber that review books. 8. Quit your netflix subscription. ;)

Dear Ruby, I'm a fellow bookworm and an English language and literature student from Bosnia and Herzegovina who is obsessed with your videos. Although Bosnian is my mother tongue, I read only in English. Not only do I enjoy the books for their plots, but I also improve my language skills in English whilst reading. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for inspiring me to read even more, pick up more books, strive for knowledge, and escape from reality in this confusing time. I'm currently reading "Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix" and "The Sound and the Fury." Lots of love and warm hugs!😊 P.S. such a great video!!😇

Here are some of my own recommendations to go along with Ruby's: - Motivation: Reading a book with a friend can be very motivating. Plus, it's always fun to discuss the book together! - Cheap Books: Thriftbooks is a great online used bookstore that I use all the time and definitely recommend. - Reading Slump: I always find that going back to some of my favorites, like The Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter, gets me back in the reading mood. Happy Reading!

I always loved the idea of reading but never read much, I'd bring twenty books home from the library and read two or three. But this year I had the goal to read 50-80 books. So far I've read 37 books with no intentions of stopping anytime soon. It's videos like these that have helped me reach my goal of reading more. Thanks Ruby!

Talking about discussing books, let's start a chain where we talk about our current reads (without spoilers)! Currently i am reading - Peter Pan (because i am turning 20 in a couple weeks, and very much so not dealing with growing up very well :') ) - A Discovery of Witches (and i am intrigued by the concept, and it's set in Oxford which i think is fun) - Jane Eyre (because i have selected this as my 'birthday read' i.e. i want to be reading it when it is my birthday, so i am getting started early) Reply with your current reads below!

Sounds intriguing! I actually have never read Peter Pan, but i should this year, i am also 20. I am currently reading the second Heroes of Olympus book (i really liked the first one, very interesting story. I am excited to learn more about Latin mythology as well) And the "Miss Peregrines home for peculiar children", i am in the third one i think? (I like the story, but right now i dont find it so captivating, resulting in long reading breaks and then being confused what happened last. But i really liked the first one)

I think Ruby's first point is really important that we figure out our goals and what reading means to us. For me reading is one of the ways to know more about the world and self. It's also definitely the most fulfilling hobby for me. But other than verbal expressions, I do enjoy artworks/graphs or concise flow charts/formula. Sometimes just going with scientific literature/experiments in my major makes me happy. So I do have a mixed activities to explore the world in different angles. ^^ Ruby's advice are super useful if we want to get more reading !! But I think we should know what role reading plays in our life and find that comfortable point.

I completely agree with you about not hesitating to read plot summaries in order to better appreciate classics. I first tried to read Notre Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo without reading summaries before, and it was actually painful because I tried so hard to understand what was actually happening that I did not even enjoy it, let alone appreciate the genius of Hugo. I started loving the book only once I had a better understading of the story after looking at chapter summaries, 300 pages into the book!

It's not about how much you read, but rather enjoying each page and soaking up the beauty of it all. Each page holds a mystery that captivates a person revealing less about the plot and more about yourself. Embrace the journey, not the distance. If you rush through pages without savoring the literature, to achieve a materialistic goal, you will never have the privilege of bathing in the richness of literature and it's wonders.

Hi Ruby! A couple of years ago I found your channel thanks to the video "I read 108 books this year" and I was SO impressed! I could barely read 20 books per year even if I really loved reading (for escapism in particular). You inspired me so much (also thanks to your other video about "how to read more") that last year I read 110 books! Thanks so much for sharing your love for books and knowledge in general! It's so inspiring and every video of yours makes me feel better! Lots of love xx

This was such a lovely video, thank you so much for all the work you put into creating your videos. Another tip for reading slumps that helps me to get back on track is to reread a favorite book because they always remind me of why I love reading in the first place and I feel like favorite books do not feel like they're a lot of work to read because they essentially feel like coming home. Also, love the new bed, it's so pretty😍
