This is the kind of detail often sought by us dorks when we get stuck. I'm reinstalling my rear derailleur and I got stuck on the damned screw that secures the cable in the derailleur - looks like I've somehow jammed the wedge part - even with the screw removed entirely, it doesn't release to allow routing the cable behind it. I'll dope it out, but now I know I'm not missing something obvious.

Absolutely. The smallest details on whether a cable goes this way or that; which is the correct ferule to use; what length brake caliper mounting bolts are the right ones; whether spacers included with a bottom bracket are need or not; do I need BH59 or BH90 brake hose; so many items can and do stop a casual bike builder in their tracks.

It should be one in the same. Use a high end Shimano derailleur cable if you can. They are colored dark barren or bark gold. They have a thin coat of slick plastic material.
