How do you pick the right size tractor attachment? To some extent, we all want the biggest attachments we can get to accomplish the job at hand as fast as possible. However, there's many variables that determine the right attachment for the job. From PTO requirements to width restrictions to even traction, there's lots of aspects to consider. You might be able to run a 72" attachment and a 48" attachment on the same tractor and have them both be the right size!
If you're trying to figure out the right size for you, then spend a few minutes watching this video to get an unbiased opinion and maybe help make that decision a little easier for you. Thanks so much for stopping by. Consider subscribing and be sure to check out the other videos on my channel! Have a great day!

I have a B2650. I carry around most days a 60 inch box blade for ballast. Along with the blade I made some simple brackets that I have my 20 gallon sprayer on always loaded with weed killer or just water. Works great and like you said it is handy to have loaded with whatever you generally need. Thanks for the videos keep them coming.

Here in southern Oklahoma, the mowing season is almost over, with the pastures drying up. I have an old 60 gal. Continental sprayer full of water on the back, excellent ballast, & makes an awesome firefighting rig. Being retired from the fire/Ems services, I remember how thankful the guys were to have assistance from the land owner with his spray rig.

The only problem I could see with using a sprayer as ballast is that it can move around. So if you had a load in the air, and dropped a rear tire in a hole that liquid would splash back and forth in the tank which could potentially upset the imbalance situation further. If you're already in a bad spot, and that spray sloshed in the wrong direction (which you have zero control of) you're going to be in a world of hurt. The only way around this is to fill the sprayer all the way full, which would work, yes. But I think a dedicated rear weight is a far better idea. Also, if you do get in trouble and roll over, you're not going to spill 55 gallons of expensive/potentially harmful chemicals on the ground with a dedicated rear weight. Just my 2 cents.

I have a serious answer for you Master C, yes it does. 😀 Also we need a "Where's Courtney?" t-shirt where you are hidden in your implement inventory. 😁

I use a 35 gallon container as ballast all the time. It's always got water in it since I use it to haul water to the barn (yes, a well is in my future). It's set up for the quick hitch so I just pick up and go. The only down side is the water sloshing water can sometimes be felt when you have weight on the front.

Hello, my englisch is typically on the conservative side. So, I hope I got your question about balance weight right. We frequently use our tractor cable winch as a balance weight. 275kg is enough in most cases and if not, we have to change to the "normal" weight (500kg). The main advantage: the tractor cable winch has a legal trailer hitch. No other weight or tool has this great feature. Cheers Heinz

I think the sprayer tank would work fine for adding about 400 to 500 lbs to the rear. I use by 72" flail mower for my 4720 as real ballast and leave it on most of the time as I'm mowing all summer. It also is a lot closer to the tractor than a bush hog so backing into things is not a problem.

The "too big" bucket doesn't make your tractor bigger, but the duel tires on the rear are cool. I took 10 eighty pound bags of cement and poured them into a shipping create I had and put that on my carry all for added ballast. Works good enough for what I do and cheap enough to get the "Wife seal of approval".

I’d say sprayer is ok for ballast if you don’t have tight quarters to work in because it does extend out behind the tractor quite a bit. I took your advice and got the ballast box and put bricks in it

For ballast. I use a stump grinder on jd2520. Works well as it is about the right weight.

I use a 60 gallon plastic food container strapped on my carryall as ballast when the backhoe isn’t on my BX. Works well for bucket work and I expect it will do same when I get some pallet forks. I have a 12v sprayer pump I use for watering a small orchard from that tank and also for tree fungicide and pesticide spraying from other containers. I’ve also tossed five or 6 80# quickrete bags on the carryall when I am concerned about sloshing or a high center of gravity (side slopes) or just need more ballast than the 600# combined weight of the carryall/barrel. Mix and match for the job and what I have around.

Im rehabbing a 8ft flail mower that someone donated to church camp. My 57 JD 520 may or may not be able to run it. Camp has a ford jubilee so not an option. My tractor definitely knows its there when picking it up. Needs a new pto shaft got one with it but telescope stuck. Turns out its twisted 10° ruffly. Also needs a new belt (missing) tensioner bent and siezed

One thing you didn't mention on "covering the tires" attachment widths... For attachments that angle (rear blade, landscape rake, snow plow) make sure the tires are still covered when the attachment is *angled*.

Scooping up snow piles im light on the rear. Want tires loaded but thats 1000 lbs to haul and i haul mine a lot. Trk and trl can do it but not sure. I put my 3pt 3 bottom plow. It didnt help much as i need new chains with a different design. Tractor is already very stable

As I posted on a previous video, my 750# flail mower is my rear ballast (along with filled rear tires) on a 35 HP compact tractor. I'm surprised the JDQA points on the wide bucket are in a position that the loader arms of a small tractor can lock into.

What are your thoughts on the Tar River 60" Tiller you have on a 2025R ? I just put 3" BORA wheel spacers on and I want to cover my tracks but not exceed the PTO HP - I would be tilling a lot of Ag land that hasn't been worked in 10 -12 years (at least initially). Thanks !

I'm in the market for a hay mower to start making my own hay. the tractor I use is a 1999 Kubota 5400 w/ 2wd, 50 pto hp. The mowers I've been eyeing up are two, first is a John Deere 625 moco requires 55 to 75 pto hp plus weighs 4200 lbs. The second is a New Holland 488 haybine requiring 35 pto hp n weighs around 2300 to 2500 lbs. What do you all think would be the best choice.

Corey, when you are considering the lifting ability of forks are you talking about the weight you save without the bucket? I know the forks are rated at a certain weight, but the bucket must weigh more that the forks. That should give you a little more ability.
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors 4 жыл бұрын
I'm talking about the lightweight forks weighing 130 lbs less than the standard duty forks. I think the bucket for the 1025r for example weighs around 180 lbs. The light weight forks weigh as little as 190 lbs, the standard duty start around 320 lbs. Hope that makes sense.

Tank would work , but I would hesitate if there could be sideways slosh in use . even with good care you could be out of control quick , so would not recommend to a customer because of liability .

I experimented with a 72" 1500 series and it worked great. However, I think the duals and tires helped out a lot. I also like to push the limits and see where things fail :)
