The rule of thumb is 1 foot of brush hog per 5 hp of tractor. I pull a 6ft bush hog behind my 32 hp 1953 ford jubilee and it cuts great.

My number one top pick would be a front loader tractor. Always get a tractor with a front loader. I use the front loader bucket A LOT. Makes installing culverts a breeze, loading & dumping gravel, moving dirt & clay around, scooping branches onto the burn pile, and the list goes on. A front loader is a must on the farm!

4 wheel drive regardless of hp, front-end loader, grapple, bush hog, and box scraper in that order. The grapple and front-end loader may be the most used implements, depending on your acres and trees and cleaning up the land.

Good job. I love "what to buy first" video and stories. Decades ago, as a "new-bee" home owner, a friend told me as a "first time home owner" tool to buy was an electric drill (way before battery power) and I found that to be great advice! No matter what ones "first time" experience might be, check first with folks who've been there, done that. It will save you lots of time, money, head aches! Thanks.

Front end loader would be the #1 most useful thing. I have added forks, flail mower, and post hole digger so far. Next will be whatever I need at the time the most. Thanks for the tractor content!

I know this is an old video but my wife and I just started looking at buying acreage. We’ll need to maintain a road, clear out some timber to create trails, till up some area for lawn, gardens and food plots. The rest will be leased out to farm crops. Your videos are extremely helpful and I appreciate the format.

Modified my carryall with 2 by 6 planking and sides, like having a pickup truck bed on my tractor. Very handy for hauling cut logs from woods.

I have a Rhino CY72 bush hog I use just about every day. It mounts on my old Ford 420. I do have a rake, a box scraper, and a pair of 3 point forks for it as well. Nice video!!

I think what you need depends on the condition of the farm you bought and what you want to do. A front end loader with a bucket, a fork and a pallet attachment and a grader for the three point hitch are good for general use in my opinion. Maybe some ballast weights, too. Literally every other attachment depends on the circumstances.

When we bought out tractor in 1960, It was robust 55 hp internatoonal harvestor. There were three implements namely Mouldbourd Plough ( 4 tines), Rotavtor (46 blades) and a 4 wheel Chessis for carriage. The mouldboard plough was doing very fine job in the field. Then Rotavator was used.

I agree with everything you said except that the carry all is a waste. We have a 120 acre pecan farm (grove) and the carry all gets used more than any other implement we have except for maybe the brush hog. I would say its invaluable to us. Great video. I always enjoy your stuff. Keep them coming.

I've been waiting for this one... Have about 10 acres with some woods and a creek. Now have 3 mowers and 2 pull swishers... New Holland skid steer and a small disc I pull with my pickup. Definitely need a box blade and V rake, but currently no PTO or 3 point.

I actually agree with everything you said and all your attachments. I would add a dump trailer that can be towed behind a 3/4 ton truck and tractor with drawbar. I would say though, by having a tiller, bucket with grapple and bush hog, and dump trailer,, you can advertise for clearing land and setting up gardens for people in the time between harvest and freeze and freeze and planting. Its usually some downtime that you can supplement your income with cash with "spare" time and machinery that would otherwise be sitting idle. Great Channel, man. Thanks for the content.

I like this type video especially for a person like me. I inherited a compact tractor, single blade, bush hog, and finish mower from my Dad. Since I'm going to be planting a large garden and help in a flower farm I bought a tiller and EA garden bedder. I think I should have got a single plow to setup the ground for the Spring planting.

Don't plough it, upsets your land and its ecology, just rotovator it. Ploughing is very damaging, a good percentage of farmers near me do not plough but cultivate crops over crops, with a No-Till policy.

Wow, I couldn't believe my ears when you said a carry-all was a total waste of money. Of course, in the present configuration you have, that's perfectly understandable. I built mine out with with pressure-treated 2" x 8" yellow pine over a frame from Tractor Supply to form a nice wide platform and back. I added removable sides and swinging gate, and underneath, I added a standard 2" trailer receiver. I use a John Deere Quick Hitch to mount the carry-all behind the tractor so it's instantly on or off, but since I use it so often, it's more often on than off. I LOVE my carry-all and it is one of the cheapest yet most useful implements I have ever owned. Of course, I have pretty much all the other implements you mentioned, but I'd say my loader bucket or loader forklift forks are by far the most useful to me on the front end. I also have a removable backhoe, but it's a pain to put on and remove and not nearly as efficient as a real TLB would be, especially given that my tractor is a fully cab version.

take my advice...rent a post hole digger....cheaper. That's one piece of equipment that sits all the time on the farm...better to rent unless you are building a major fence project

there ya go!!! Good luck for sure....a good Woods rotary brush hog would be my first purchase, along with a nice woods scrape blade to keep up roads and push debris...next get yourself a grapple...then look at tillers and such

I dont have 4 yet, but my first ones I bought with the tractor were backhoe, scrape blade( wish i would have got one with hydraulics that adjust in all the differnt directions. I got a reverse tine rototiller. And I guess that front loader of that counts. Front quick attach forks are my next investment

I have a 60hp Kubota and got a 10' bushhog, I have over 15 acres of pasture to cut. I needed to maximize my time on the tractor and a 6-8 foot cutter would add a couple of hours to the job.

Thank you for helping me. Your information has been very good. I just need to find a site or someone to show me how to plant Corn, Beans, and where to find 2 or 4 row planters. And what's needed to plow around the row crops when they come up. Simple farming like farmers did 40 - 50 years ago.

I have a carryall that I have a gasoline powered air compressor mounted for driving t-post, plus any other thing that needs air. #1 = bush hog, #2 = disc, #3 = front end loader, and #4 = 150 gal sprayer. Other items are grader/scraper, rear blade, grapple, hyd. post hole digger, garden bedder, trailer, etc.

Box blade, yes, number 1. Rear blade too if moving snow in winter. 3 point chipper.. 3pt. carryall is nice to make a box to carry firewood with, so you can fill the loader bucket plus that.

I would add a 5th implement and it would be optional depending on how much snow you get in the winter. A pivoting snow blade that mounts on your loader and snow chains for your tractor tires. If you live where it snows a lot it will make life easier.

Great video! I need to get me a loader after seeing your videos. I have a woods BW12' batwing mower (35-75hp rating) it handles great on my 55hp john deere. You should look into one if youre just mowing pastures. Great time saver!

I would recommend using the plow at least once before the rototiller. Because you can buy a used plow for a couple hundred bucks. Use it to make sure there are no hidden surprises. After that, the rototiller is awesome. Just hate to tear up expensive equipment when I don't have to. You can use even resale them and get your money back.

Would depend more on what kind of farming one would be doing. If raising crops on a small scale or having a pasture and raising hay; each would require different equipment to function. You have a great collection and all suits your needs. For myself: bush hog, turning plow, and disk are a must. Would like to have a loader, cultipacker, and box blade. I am learning a lot from your videos Josh.

Yes! Tractor content! 🤠 About the Bush Hog - I use the rule where the width should match the width of your rear wheels on your tractor. This rule applies to other implements too. Loader is my #1, #2 hydraulic dump trailer, #3 is bush hog (for me).

This kind of works up to a size. When you get up there you can pull a batwing mower that's way wider than the tires. Usually that rule kind of works as well.

Nate vanLandingham for sure. My workhorse is an Allis Chalmers 170 (pic of a 170 rear view: goo.gl/images/pMVaA4) with a 7’ span across the rear tires. So a 7’ would be the min size I would run for that machine IMO. I have an Allis Chalmers 720 which has a 4’ span and I run a 4’ bush hog on that (pic of a 720 rear view: goo.gl/images/2h1tpb). I guess we should add “minimum size” to the rule as you pointed out. I have run a 5’ on the 170 and it is harder to cover a big area and not miss spots. With an equal length - if your tires fit in between something so does your cut line.

You can stab straddle or pick up hay with pallet forks but you can't pick up pallets with a hay pole.

racheting come-along isn't an attachment but i tend to use it with my tractor quite a bit to get at the hanging trees or stuff where the tractor can't easily go, and some tow chains. The TOOLS you keep in the cab or box in the field with you are critical too. You can't be huffing it back to the garage for that wrench. Helps to have a level too for adjusting the "angle of the dangle", as they say. And bring that Deep Woods OFF.

My order of implements will be the loader, roto-tiller, and box blade....I think it really depends on your needs at the time which implements you start out with. Someone in snow country may want a snow blower, or plow before they purchase a tiller, box blade, rotary cutter, etc. My chores list will be repairing my driveway, and getting 2 loads of gravel hauled in which will have to be moved around to a couple different areas that the dump truck can't get into so the loader and box blade will be immediately needed. The roto-tiller as I have a couple areas that need to be loosened up and filled in where ditches were that got partially filled in but extremely rough to walk and drive across. I'll eventually get snow handling equipment but I have a snow blower for my lawn tractor so that's currently taken care of with what little snow we have been getting the past few years. I only have an acre so a sub-compact tractor will easily handle all my chores and chores I haven't even thought of LOL. I put my name on a new tractor, loader, tiller, and box blade at the dealer....apparently this year many people have gone and bought new tractors, they've sold all their inventory that usually lasts them 6-9 months within the past 2 months, pretty good sales year for the dealer, sucks for the guy trying to get their first tractor though LOL. Went over hoping to climb on a tractor and get myself familiarized with them, and look at the implements, but what I found was a very bare sales lot LOL....dealer is estimating end of August beginning of September for my tractor to arrive & be ready to pickup...can't wait, the chore list keeps on growing. I am still tossing the idea around of picking up the mid-mount mower for the tractor as well. I have a lawn tractor that's got plenty of life left, but I could save $300 on the mower if I buy it when I buy the tractor. May be worth buying even it it only gets used a couple times a year.
