This video was instrumental in helping me get my timing chains replaced 100% correctly on my 2.0 tsi engine. I'm so very grateful that I bought this car. With this engine. Because it introduced me to your channel Charles. Your an awesome mechanic I just did this job on my gen 1 2.0 tsi CCTA engine with 145k miles, engine live data channel 93 intake cam adjustment was at -5.4, after the replacement of all the chains, guides, & and updated timing chain tensioner. channel 93 shows -1.02 degrees of adjustment and the engine runs smoother for sure. I worked on this job for 21 hours non stop. From 9am Thursday to 6am Friday. If it cost me 1k in labor then my time spent working on this was ~20 dollars an hour. So if you make less than that consider DIY it's worth it. This was a life changing experience guys. While I was working on it, the timing slipped on me and I started panic, but then I collected my self. watched this video over and over, read my factory manual and torqued my heart out. I have driven the car around town, and it runs great. Really really great. I am so glad that I didn't destroy my engine. I am so happy 21 hours of my life didn't go to waste. I'm really eager to see how the pistons rings and cylinder walls will hold up as I drag this thing into 200k miles. Getting to work on engines for the first time has been really cool. But I wouldn't have even attempted this if I couldn't find good resources about the job online. Thank you so much Charles

This upload came at perfect timing, just had a 2011 A5 come into work with a timing failure and no compression. Just got the head off yesterday ready for rebuild, measured between the cam marks at just over 150MM and the inlet mark was between links. So obviously I’ll be replacing all the chain so this video was extremely helpful and saved me having to read the manual, it’s much easier visually seeing the process. Thanks 👍🏻

Charles is absolutely right about taking your time and following the shop manual. Set the beer aside for later. Be rested and alert. Do it in stages if you can. Tearing it down only took me a few hours. Then I stopped and read about it again and again. As it is I did a full timing set on my B8 A4 as "maintenance" last fall before the old tensioner coughed. Guides, bolts, chains, balance shafts, gears, cover, timing bridge. Yes I plan to keep the car. It's not really a hard job but you need to be alert. If you lose timing or forget to torque something down bad things can happen in a hurry. And the fact that the timing marks don't line up after rotating the engine one or two revolutions threw me until I read about it. An Audi engineering paper stated something like 164 revolutions. Crazy. I bet you I checked those marks 10x :). Good luck!

Glad I did cause today I got the lower timing cover off to be met with the early style chain tensioner.. My car was serviced at the dealer until 2019 under the 10yr warranty program by the previous owner, I was surprised to see the early tensioner style hanging out in there at 140kmiles.

It isn't a 1:1 ratio so when you open it up it is very likely that the timing marks won't be lined up! You have to look very hard for the gear timing marks when it is in the car and then you have to rotate the gear to get them in time.

Thank you for this video, I just picked up a non-running 2009 2.0l audi a4, the notes said the person was driving it and no problems, the next day they went to start it and the car would not start, they sold it to me assuming the engine is no good (which may be true), today I removed the top timing cover and found the cam timing marks but did not know where they should be, someone marked on the valve cover where the LH cam should line up to, but no indication for the RH cam, so I lined up the LH and took a photo noting where both cam marks are, and thanks to your video I can tell the timing is out, by probably about an inch, I am thinking one cam gear has skipped a tooth on the chain. Now the big question is, are the valves bent? (most likely), I think I am going to loosen the chain and put the other cam to where it should be and then tighten and reassemble everything and just send it, see if the car will run. I feel like it most likely needs a new engine and that was the idea when I bought it, so I don't really feel like I am losing anything by trying this, plus I don't know what else to try while the engine is still in the car. Of course, if it does run, then I will shut it off and go about replacing the timing chain and all associated bits.

@@HumbleMechanic Hey there! Back again! For a timing chain/tensioner project, what resource would you use to allow the most yet practical access to the engine? (Engine hoist? "Engine support bar"?) Is the 1.8L similar if not the same as the 2.0 timing? Clarification: My main issue is maintaining the engine within the parameters of the engine compartment, since access is tight and parts to the mount are in the way. So I am trying to find a safe, yet workable solution, especially since there is one main part leading to the passenger-side mount that really is in the way. I've spoken to several shops that have given me quotes from $800 to $2600 and some of them say that they need todo balance shafts, cam bridges, cam cradle, or something like that... plus several chains, guides, lower cover, etc... I don't understand why the price is so ridiculous and they want to change so much when really the only part that is prone to fail is the actual tensioner/chain. So much stuff jammed in there... This is why I love the Mercedes OM617: to change the timing chain, all you have to remove is the valve cover, the thermostat housing, and chain tensioner spring and housing. Then cut a link out of the old chain, attach the end of the new one to the old, making sure the chain is constantly meshed with the cam sprocket while you carefully rotate the crankshaft and the new chain gets pulled through, then permanently connect the ends of the new chain. Imagine, replacing a timing chain in less than 20 minutes. (With enough practice)

Hello, thanks again for uploading this video! I'm almost done installing my new chain and tensioner after watching this video a couple of times but had a question about the guide and tensioner bolts - do they not need threadlocker/loctite? The torque specs are extremely low (20nm for guides, 9nm for tensioner) which makes me worry that they could loosen overtime with engine vibration.

Great video! I had this pre-emptively done to my 2011 Mk6 GTI a couple years before the big class action (new chain, tensioner, guides, and cover) because having a stab of anxiety every time you crank your car up isn't a good way to live. I'm glad the Mk7's don't seem to have the same tensioner and chain issues. Honestly it doesn't look like that bad of a job, though it's probably a much bigger pain in the ass to to do with the engine in the car, surrounded by accessories.

Getting the middle bolt out of the mounting bracket is probably the hardest bit. Just doing it on a Scirocco and there's not enough clearnace between engine and body for the bolt and a tool to remove it. Ended up removing the last bit one flat at a time, took ages. Not looking forward to putting it back in!

This is nicely explained, thank you. What I don't get is if you are just replacing the timing chain, how do you know if the timing chain is properly set in relation to the balance shaft chain? My chain was in time, just the tensioner was shot. I counted the links between the marks and compared to marked links on new chain so my chain had not skipped. But, how would I be 100% certain that it was not assembled incorrectly to begin with without rotating the motor several dozen times until the timing marks line up with the balance chain marks? Oh, I did download the erwin manual and the way they measure the crankshaft pulley marks is slightly different than the way you showed.

Great video! Simple and to the point. When is the recommended timing chain replacement for the 2.0 tfsi? I was planning for about 85k.

So I have a 2008.5 Jetta tsi 2.0t , had an engine replacement via VW warranty in march 2014 with 68k miles I have now 203k . 134k on new engine. What’s your thoughts on doing a timing chain kit replacement? I would assume it has the newer tensioner and chain, no issues so far.

hey loving your work man, question for you sir .... after an engine rebuild on a 2009 2.0 tsi sirocco .. all up and running now , i have a clicking sound from the engine think its inside the upper plastic timing cover , i am sure i am properly timed up , but i have a feeling the new plastic guides are a bit suspect , a sound that wasn't there before but maybe didn't notice with the thudding of the spun bearings in the rods ... i got the crank machined and new rods and bearings , new lifters and rockers the whole lot , do you think i should revisit the timing ? go with the German timing kit or trust the budget kit i bought .... or do you know of another cause of a clattery sound on declaration, the exhaust sounds great thou ?

Great video, great for a normal timing chain replacement however if the engine isn't already timed up then this video doesn't help as much, other videos have showed there are timing marks on the cam pulleys so may require a revisit or caption adding to the video, keep up the good work.

I recently bought a vaico kit from rockauto for my 2014 Passat 1.8t. from what I can see, three of the guides are different than what was on the car. It seems like they could work, but i'm wondering if it matters

Charles (or anyone here with 2.0t knowledge) I’ve just done timing and balance shaft chains guides and tensioners this past week with a huge part in thanks to this video. Car runs much better now (previously was at 5.7 degrees for cam on phase , cutting it close chain ea stretched a good bit 2014 w 170k miles). My question is when checking cam phase now with vcds I get a reading of 0.00 degrees , is this normal ? I feel like even if minimal there should be some sort of number there after replacing. Also should I have done my oil pump chain and tensioner while I was in there or possibly even pulled the pan to do the entire oil pump assembly since I’m at 170k. Should my Cambridge have been replaced or left hand thread valve holding the bridge on the intake cam. Thanks

Could this be what's causing the really loud ticking at idle coming from my 2017 Tiguan? It sounds like the lifter/injector tick on my MK7 but a lot louder
