How to Properly Tip a Lawn Mower to work under the Mower Deck. Whether you need to change the oil, sharpen blades or clean under the deck you will need to tip your mower over to accomplish these tasks. Chances are if you just tip your mower over, the piston cylinder will fill up with oil and you will make a mess on your garage floor or concrete driveway. Also when you tip the mower back your piston cylinder may be full of oil which will hydro-lock your piston which will not allow you to start your engine. You will not be able to pull the starter cord.
In this video I will show you how to properly tip a small engine (4 cycle engine) so that you will not run into any of these problems.

It's also a good idea to pull the cap off the spark plug to prevent accidental engine start.

Man I love KZbin and I love ppl like you that upload such helpful information. I really appreciate the video. I may come back here in the future if I have any questions if that's okay. I just got the same mower and I'm doing as much research on it as possible.

Leaving fuel in the carb, providing the gas is treated with a stabilizer, keeps gaskets and O rings lubricated and from drying out. I use stabilizer in my gas all year round.

QUESTION: I recently tilted my Cub Cadet mower on its side in order to use a garden tool to scrape out some grass that had built up inside the mower. The moment I tilted the mower on its side with the air filter pointing up, I heard "HISSS!!!... HISSSS!!!" It was as if a drop of something spilled and was becoming HOTT and flammable. After I was done cleaning out the interior of the mower, I waited 15 minutes for the oil to go back down. I then started the mower. There was a large cloud of grey smoke. This smoke got worse. It was obvious the mower was not going to run properly. I then grabbed the weed wacker and did that chore instead. This took about a half hour, which allowed the mower to sit there and become calm and settle down again. There was another cloud of grey smoke, but not as bad this time. The smoke then disappeared for several seconds. I then started to move the lawn mower. But then the grey smoke came back. it was obvious the mower wasn't going to work anymore. Do you know what happened? I have tilted the mower on its side in the past to clean it, but there were no problems like this.

Good video.. good refresher.. I tell people spark plug up. Is the stuff you past on underdeck to keep grass sticking any good ? Notice it's expensive?

Wish I’d seen this before.. lol I flipped mine over to clean to clumps of wet grass.. was so proud of myself.. Until I flipped it back to discover all the gas/boil had leaked out on our brand new concrete. Lol.😂

If you notice the blue connector on the lower left you connect a hose to it. turn the hose on, start the mower and the clippings will washout. Do that until the water isn't green. Do that after each use and you will never get the build up he has.

Why won't the oil/fuel come out of their filler pipes when the mower's tilted?

I followed these instructions to the letter. When I set the mower back upright and pulled the starter cord the blade rotated quite freely but the motor would not start or show any sign of firing. Thinking that the plug might be fouled I pulled the spark plug but it was dry and clean. While the plug was out I pulled the starter cord over about half a dozen times. I then replaced the spark plug and pulled it over again and it started and ran fine. It's a Briggs engine. This might work for you too if you have the same experience.

And the same thing happened a second time - this time pulling the plug was not enough, I did so and replaced but it still would not start. However it did fire up after I pulled the plug a second time and this time with a dry paper towel cleaned the spark plug. Replaced the plug and it fired up right away. I think if there is the slightest bit of damp from gas fumes on the plug then the plug will not fire correctly since the electric charge can leak to ground through the damp plug components. Perhaps the first time I placed the plug in direct sun and the wetness evaporated before I replaced it.

Toro manual says the following: Remove the spark plug, add 30 ml (1 fl oz) of engine oil through the spark-plug hole, and pull the starter rope slowly several times to distribute oil throughout the cylinder to prevent cylinder corrosion during the off-season. Any thoughts on this?

That is a good idea especially if you have cold winters and hot days and cold days during fall and spring. You will get moisture in the cylinder and it can cause corrosion. You can also spray fogging oil in there which is a little easier and do the same thing doesn’t take much

Its the funniest thing, When I mow my ditches I alway keep the carb UP, HOWEVER, every so often, the mower will start spewing smoke. With the carb UP the engine is not suppose to do that. After a minute the smoke clears and the engine runs clean again. So weird. !
