Washing a 60v Toro SR: I don’t use a pressure washer and I do this once a month to avoid stubborn build up. 1) Rinse with hose 2) Spray with cleaner - I use simple green 3) Clean with dishwasher brush and plastic putty knife 4) Rinse with hose. Do this in smart stow position. 5) Run the mower blade for a few minutes to dry deck. 6) Leaf blower for top of mower

Great tips on mower “deck” cleaning JB! As hard as I’ve tried, I just can’t get that JD X370 tipped on it’s side to clean the deck….😂. It does have the water clean out port but I’ve never used it or ever will. As you mentioned, water and metal don’t mix. Also, I think you should wait until the mower is cooled off a bit after mowing before hitting it with water. IMO. Hey can I borrow your power washer?? Oh….that’s from another video! Hope your enjoying the pool! Cheers buddy!

Hey JB, great video on how to thoroughly clean a mower deck. Just a quick observation though, like yourself, I've been taught a lot of things from my dad over the years with respect to in and out of the garage, but his first rule of thumb (pardon the pun here) was before putting your hand under a mower deck, or snow blower, was to unplug your spark plug. I've never forgotten this rule, and have all my fingers and toes. Is this an old wives tale that turning the blade could engage a cycle of the engine? Love to hear your feedback on this and as always, great videos. Thanks
@GarageGear

Hey Darren! Couple things here. First off I’m damned if I mention it and damned if I don’t. People always have something to say about this. In 25 years of using a mower I never had one start up on me using these methods. I’m also not hitting, twisting, spinning or even touching the blade on purpose to give it any reason to start either. It would also take a lot of revolutions of the blade to start the machine up. A bump here and there on the blade is not going to start it up. Thanks for watching! 👍
@jje984
@jje984 8 ай бұрын
Yes, always always always unplug the spark plug. When you're under the deck it's easy enough for you to twist the blade a bit and if it's warm or the piston is in the just the right spot it could start. It's not likely but it's just a precaution you have to take when you're putting your hands inside a machine with a sharp blade that can spin at 3000 RPMs

Hey JB!! Its great to get people motivated to clean their decks. I always wet the grass under the mower and let it sit for 10 minutes or so. The dried grass comes off so much easier. And I always run the mower for a few minutes after it is wet to dry the bottom and prevent rust. And blow it all off. Any tips on cleaning the catcher mesh? seems no matter what I do the mesh clogs up, Its a small riding mower. Blessings to you and your family, have a Great weekend!! I picked up the new Toro Recycler. It was the rear wheel drive with a steel deck. I looked around for one with a discharge chute. I guess they have sold out of those in my area. My old lasted six years before the deck cracked in several places with hard use. And I didn’t follow your deck cleaning process. I mowed six yards each week. I did get the discharge chute from Toro, but I’m not sure how it will turn out. I will keep you informed

Hey JB thanks for yet another great video. I watched your reviews on the Toro 21564 and bought one via online order from Home Depot. This is my first Toro and after owning 2 Hondas since 1989 it was a big step for me. (HR 214 and a HRX 0:23 217). Like you I do all of my own maintenance and mechanical work. I am sure glad that I went with the Toro, especially since Honda is pulling out of the residential market. 2 other quick things, I have the same exact power washer and have had it for 7-8 years. The only problem that I had with it was the pump seals gave out and it was leaking bad. I found a video online where a guy had the same exact issue with he replaced the seals and wah lah the issue was fixed. So if yours ever leaks know there is a cheaper way to fix it than replacing the pump assembly. Also noticed you are a Jeep Wrangler man. 👍👍 I have a 2017 75 th anniversary JK and love it. This the 4th Jeep I have owned since 1973. I had a 57 CJ, a 63 CJ, and an 80 Renegade. So after raising the boys and hitting the golden years and retiring I am on my 4th and probably last Jeep. I take very good care of it as I do and have done my entire life. Comes from being raised right and paying for my own stuff forever. Anyway enough rattling. Just wanted to say thanks again for all of your great videos. Keep up the good work my friend.

I never did undercarriage maintenance to my mower, and the deck just rusted apart. The mower still worked great, but it was only 5 years old. I found a replacement deck, and stripped all the parts off the rusted deck, and basically rebuilt the mower. Now with watching your videos I am able to clean my mower properly! I also have an old tire brush that I use to clean out the deck after using a hose to it. Once I clean it I let it dry, and every fourth use I apply silicone spray to the deck. I think that helps keep grass from sticking, but it cant hurt. I also remove the spark plug wire, as I learned that as a kid so I don't accidentally cause the mower to spin on.

Most excellent! I’m a small engine mechanic and I wish everyone would follow these steps for the sake of their mowers and for their mechanics when they bring it for maintenance. 😊 Also, If the mower doesn’t have an automatic blade/ engine stop, please disconnect the spark plug wire for safety when your hands goes near the blade…many of my older colleagues have learned this the hard way and now have 3/4 fingers!

For the last twenty five years, ive just taken the mower to end of driveway and shoot a stream of water from the hose up into the mower while it is running. I do it almost everytime. Then hose off the top of the deck and let the mower run for 2-3 min after in the sun to dry. At the end of mowing season it takes about 10 minutes to wipe or scrape what little grass is under the deck.

I have a similar Toro mower with the smart stow. One thing I would suggest after you blow off the mower after you have pressure washed it, spray some lubricant around the inside of the wheels and cables that could potentially rust or bind. My mower has had the tendency to be difficult reversing with the personal pace system active if I miss this step.

I used to have an old toro with a hose port on the top of the deck. Hook the hose right up to it. That not a thing anymore? Edit: just finished the video and see you mentioned it. In the spring and fall when there’s a LOT of grass, and/or if the clippings are damp and sticking to the deck a lot, the washout port definitely gets a lot. It’ll make your driveway look like to spilled pesto all over it. Definitely up there with your quick rinse method. I’d hose the whole mower off then run it for a minute or two to help it dry. No more of a rust issue than anything else with water.

Toro's instructions are to run the mower on level pavement while spraying water on the pavement behind the right front wheel. Anyone here ever try that? Personally, I've got the Toro Super Recycler and have been tipping it on it's side setting my multi-spray spray head to 'stream' and carefully spray the bottom with a stream of water. The deck ends up very clean, no water topside, when finished. Takes 5 minutes after every mow.

Had my super recycler for 22years and it is important to clean off the grass under the deck otherwise it will just leave clumps on the lawn. Also with the very lowest height setting will leave clumps same with the grass being wet. The grass has to be completely dry to benefit the recycling/mulch. Happy mowing season.

I'm going to put the can in a plastic bag, then set it in a bucket of very warm water for 20 min or so, then flip it over and repeat - I'll update and let you know if that helps with the mixing of it... If I may offer an important suggestion. First and foremost, disconnect the spark plug! One ony has to think about hand starting an old-fashioned Biplane aircraft's engine. Question, how often would you suggest removing and sharpening the cutting blades. Myself, every 3rd or 4th, depending on inspection. If there's more than just a couple of Knicks from the odd loose landscape rock.

Just curious though if anyone has actually tried the method suggested in the Toro manual. It says to run the mower on clean concrete surface and spray the hose in front of the right side rear wheel, letting the blade help clean the under side. Sure, I will try it myself, still haven't had time to unbox mine yet.

Jack the wheels way up if parking it on clay, cement or dirt. At least the condensation should be less. But under a carport or canopy is a million times better than no cover at all. Some tarps offer almost no protection from hidden corrosion in electrical contacts and switches. The magnets will rust horribly. I guess live and learn.

I have a 10 year old Sears mower with a mulching blade on it. Everytime I use it, grass cloggs the 5 X 5 inch hole where grass clippings are supposed to blow thru to reach the catcher. Also, the end of the blade accumulates such a clump of grass that the blades sieze because it can't flow thru it.. I haven't tried the Slip Plate coating, but still the design of the mower, I feel, wasn't thought through. How so I get past this? Yes, the grass is wet from dew in the morning, but I'm mowing past 4:00 and still is a tad wet.

I noticed you suggested putting the leftover clippings in your composter. You also said that you used deck keepers. I think it wiser not to add these clippings to your composter but just throw away. Mowers tend to leak a little oil or gas from time to time there might also have paint and mostly the insect treatment from the lawn.which you may not want with a garden.
