To date, I mix black and white acrylic paint to get nice grey, and add a lot of water. This mixture I add in two layers on paper or canvas, and works ok. I will try this method too. Best regards from Serbia.

Is that ratio ink/water enough to change the properties of the paper's surface too (fabriano or arches hot press) or only sizing with liquid shellac can do it?

Why can't you just use a lower ratio of ink: water to tone a sheet of white Roma?

apparently you can. A friend of mine tried it and it works. I've never tried to do it though...
