The red version is basically straight tetrachloroethylene, the stuff used in dry cleaning. It is a category I (strongest) carcinogen… Non-chlorinated version is acetone and toluene, not delicious but not nearly as nasty.😢

Thanks for this message. I hear phosgene gas is like permanantly damaging to lungs. So now (2022) they seem to make less or no more clorinated brake clean, (mine has toluene, another solvent.) Not sure that it is a lot safer either, but not that tetracloroethylene we used to see.

Chlorinated or non-chlorinated? I've been using the Wal-Mart branded cleaner, flammable, which I think is non-chlorinated.

Sooo what the hell CAN we use Brake Cleaner on? Seems like nothing...cause there's plastic and rubber near or behind everything on a modern car, along with some sort of painted or coated surfaces.

Well, you can use it to clean brake rotors. Hence the name.
@BigBear--3 ай бұрын
@@mattadams1442 I mean new ones...I guess. But if they're on the car already are you can take the rotors off to clean them? If not then you'll end up spraying Brake Cleaner on everything else around and behind the Rotors. Which will include plastic, rubber, and painted or coated surfaces. Realistically I've never had a situation where I needed to clean the rotors on a car, unless they were new prior to installation. I'd rather use a homemade IPA spray than Brake Cleaner, if I did have to wipe some rotors down on a vehicle, if I got oil, grease, or anything else on them. There's no, or very little, risk of any unintentional damage that way. Basically the only times I've ever even used Brake Cleaner, was maybe on some parts, while not on the vehicle.

Stupid question of the day: I really need to clean my breaks. This stuff was advertised to use without disassembling the break components. Does that mean you can leave the tires on as well? Im not in a position to remove the tires, and after reading instructions, it says keep away from rubber. Anyone have any insight on that?

Yesterday by accident I dropped and spelled entire 6 quart of dirty engine oil all over the engine. Car is still parked, I didn't start it yet. How or what I should use to clean it? Can not take to car wash nor can wash at home. I was planning to use multiple Brakleen cans, but now you said these are not good for plastic under the hood. What I should do?

But seriously, the chemicals in industrial cleaners are meant to break down petroleum-based products. Prolonged heavy exposure like direct hand washing could contribute to serious skin and tissue issues down the road. Best to leave the hands to some CRC hand cleaner :)
