I'm in Northern New Jersey, zone 6a. I planted a few test plants last season to see if they would survive the winter here. I planted 2 very young goji berry plants (8-10 inches tall) and mulched them with wood chips. I just saw little buds on them yesterday so they survived 0 degrees this winter. Also, I planted 2 young Aronia berry plants around the same time, about 10 inches tall. One in the ground and one in a small pot. (I actually forgot to put it in the ground) and they both survived 0 degrees. With no mulch!

Goji berries are cold tolerant, so they can handle the cold in many central and northern states.

Musa basjoo pseudostems can survive without protection to -5c, as long as it doesn't freeze too often. They've root hardy to at least -10c. I've been growing them in Dublin, Ireland for 15 years.

I just cut mine down to the ground and cover with a bale of Hay. They come back big time in the Spring. And they come back with more stalks! NW South Carolina. Zone 7 I think.

I believe he lives in a subtropical area. If you live in a cooler climate that it does get below 65 degrees. I would try to get a large clear bag .place on top covering. and put some mulch at the bottom many people use hay some people just use straw, but I use bamboo Mulch and bamboo mulch isntout on the market if you interested in getting some just let me know ,but the bamboo mulch at the bottom of our banana trees absorbs any water that isn't supposed to be there, and then it also provides water to the bananas tree as needed.

You should get straw Straub won't hold the water in and if you get well you guys are in Arizona so I'm in the Northeast where it rains during the winter time so people who have banana trees and it gets starts getting really cold I put the same effect he has basically and I use straw for my banana trees out here in Southeast Georgia 8 hours from Tampa Bay 4 hours to Jacksonville Florida it gets cold by us we already in 28° I cut my tree leaves down wrap them up with newspapers at the bottom give them some extra coffee grinds eggshells and banana peels then I mulch it with the same effect but I use straw because it rains and it will cause root rot which you don't want this works in subtropical climates where you don't get much rain but for the states that do get rain this is not a good idea to do my opinion of course strong would work way better for people in Northeast Southeastern area of the United States of America where it does get cold but use straw then leaves.

Good information. Straw is an excellent insulator because it doesn't hold water, is hollow (traps air) and doesn't compress like leaf, grass or hay.
@greensteelusallc7862
@greensteelusallc7862 2 жыл бұрын
@@rickdavis2235 Yes Rick but we don't use hay in our neck of the woods. What we use around our banana trees , is Bamboo mulch. along llwith the large clear bags creating a greenhouse for it, we use bamboo mulch. Yes I said bamboo mulch. As you can see the name of my channel is called Green Steel USA LLC. We grow giant bamboo out here on 4 Acres of rural land in Southeast Georgia. We have excellent clay source and mineral spring well water which helps the bamboo out. bamboo liks to get their feet wet but they don't like to be soaked Our weather system kind of files the tennessee-kentucky weatherflow. Unfortunately it gets extremely cold sometimes in the winter and because banana trees is a subtropical plants. I put large bags on top of my tree. It creates moisture with the sun and continues to allow the leaves to grow on a natural basis. The water on the inside is good for the banana tree because banana trees need lots of water for them to create strength to grow nice beautiful Chiquita bananas. And unfortunately I do not have the best setup for a greenhouse just yet, but eventually I will love to move them into my 12 ft hoop Greenhouse. Any moisture that is on the floor the bamboo wood absorb it , along with providing extra water for the bananas to grow through in the winter.
@rickdavis2235
@rickdavis2235 2 жыл бұрын
@@greensteelusallc7862 I put my cavendish in my greenhouse and the leaves started to yellow so I moved it back outside with the blue java. It's already looking better. We can grow bamboo down here too but most people find it too invasive.
