I use a furman surge protector or surgex is the best surge protector and It is a step up and step down regulator so it always keeps your voltage perfectly at where it needs, a UPS is just switching relay that switching You from utility to a AC pure sin wave inverter. A ups might also have voltage regulation When it's running on utility. But when it switches over to The inverter It is a perfectly regulated Pure sine wave.

Yeah, even with what you talked about, it's still going to do severe damage to anything not shielded. It will induce a current in any wire, causing any sensitive components to burn up. Any antennas would be like a vacuum sucking the pulse in to it's self. You can't get past the wire part. Look up the 1859 Carrington event. If that happened now, it would take years to recover. I have heard none of our infrastructure is hardened against a Carrington event, something we probably would see coming, but much less an emp, which would be a surprise attack.

We are full time RVers with 1100w of solar on our roof. We can live fine off grid. Our microwave is EMF shielded and easily holds both laptops, all our cell phones, and the Starlink router. Our Starlink antenna sits on its portable mount that sets on a steel garbage can lid. The garbage can is nearby ready to drop over the antenna onto the lid if we have any time at all. A small steel garbage can inside can hold most or all your sensitive items -- laptops, towers, phones, keys, routers, etc., extremely affordably.

All ground wires need to terminate to a common ground point. You shouldn't ground the antenna to a separate ground rod, when it's also connected via cable to your home's ground. You have to ground dishy to your existing ground rod. For surge suppression, you should have a whole-home surge suppressor installed in your main panel. This greatly protects against nearby lightning strikes causing massive surges from getting in to your home. Along with the UPS, of course.

You are right about an EMP. Yes the antenna is the only part you can't completely protect. The Antenna would funnel the pulse right into your system. The best thing you can do is have spares that are keep in a Faraday cage. What happens is the diod junctions in the IC's get blow when the pulse hits.

I almost laughed myself out of my chair when you said to get on a ladder and pound a 12 foot ground rod into the ground, this likely works in places like Florida with sandy soil, I live in the Rocky Mountains and if you can drive a rod more than 3 feet into the ground you are lucky. Most ground systems around here use multiple rods connected together to form a ground field, I use 3 4 foot rods tied together. I also agree with other folks comments that your antenna ground should be connected to the same ground used by your home otherwise you will cause ground currents to occur which are very bad for electronics when they get very high, like just a few volts. All data centers should be using common grounds or if not the equipment should only be connected to ground at one point so with Starlink you already have a ground through the data cable you would need to disconnect the ground at the router if you are going to connect another ground to the antenna. I have been out of the field for about 25 years but I doubt that grounding systems have changed that much. Look forward to hearing from those with newer ideas.

As far as the UPS, I like to take the standard medium duty UPS, bypass the little battery inside the unit by extending the cables to a 100AH Lifepo4 Lithium battery to be able to run all day during our frequent outages and brownouts here in So California. I only power up the Starlink and one external AP to provide internet for me and my neighbors during outages. If the outage lasts more than a day or so, I just power up one of my dual fuel generators and call it good. My grounds are all routed to my Amateur Radio Room, (W6GAC) where I ground everything to four 8ft copper clad grounding rods outside in the yard. Cheers!

Save your equipment from nearby lightening strikes. A/C, Antennas, hard wire communication and solar panels all need surge suppressors. All of these require a good ground and it's best if they are an isolated ground seperate from your A/C breaker box ground that is tied to your power grid neutral.

Most vehicles are a Rolling faraday cage Minus being grounded, Since the Rubber wheels isolate the vehicle from the ground. Most vehicles Usually would not be affected by a emp. Also I did a research that metal that's isolated from ground is Better able to bounce Ions, But if enough of those ions could build up. They could discharge. Grounded metal absorb And transport the ions into the ground. Just think about static shocks on your car. But there's a possibility that a buildup could fry the computer. Things that would be affected the most would be anything with a coil, Transformers, speakers Especially if they're not on a grounded source They would generate a field and Produce some kind of current. I guess if you're worried about it. You could put some kind of copper alligator clamp Onto a wire That is grounded Just In case that you forgot, it was clamped on it would just release as you drove off.

The other 4 are Cybers 1500va, 1 for each of my 49 inch G9 monitors, 1 for my office TV, and the last for my QNAP NAS box and Exteranal USB to QNAP Backup NAS. I have over 14 in my entire home. You can't have enough. In my area we are always losing power and getting spiked. And now we found out for the next 2 years, they will start to busy ALL power lines from above so this means loss of power coming. Yes I have whole home generator. But the UPS's protect and keep power going as long as you need it to. My point is, DO NOT skimp on this process and DO NOT buy cheap ones. You get what you pay for! My 2 cents

The Starlink dish has a lot of electronics that would burn out with an EMP. The only solution is to keep a spare Starlink dish and router inside a metal box in your basement. A hardened device would be very expensive so it would be cheaper to buy a spare one and shield it.

Higher frequencies have less range but more Bandwith, And Less Letency, I've done tests with my sixty GHz it has three Settings 58 GHz, 60 Ghz 62 GHz. Most of them is less than a millisecond Latency If you ping though the system. Also higher the frequency, smaller the antenna, While lower frequencies are the complete opposite, they have a larger range at the cost of less bandwith And larger latency And bigger Antenna. But when it rains the 62GHz Will start having problems compared to 58 GHz I use CMD To ping, And I use something called iperf for bandwith

If we ever had a threat of an EMP one solution would be your micro wave oven. It is a Faraday box. Take out the glass tray and place your phones, charger, usb cables, tablet computers or anything you may have that has a computer chip in it. Unplug your micro wave oven. You can also use a non-working micro wave oven. It too is a shield. There are other ways such as EMP bags on Amazon or 50 caliber metal ammunition boxes you can get at Harbor Freight. Remember if we get hit nothing will work. Your car won't work, TV, nothing electronic. Don't forget your USB cables as they have a chip in the USB "A" end.

Hi Joe. I have been involved in the electrical system for many, many years. EMP stories are mostly at this time FUD and clickbait. Invariably they will get to the power grid, how antiquated it is and how vulnerable it is to EMP. BS. We knew starting in the 70's about EMP from solar and/ or nuclear weapons, neutrons, etc. Our grid is constantly being upgraded. I have lived through more than three major waves. The electronic relaying and protection that we have today is so far advanced, and have EMP protection built in for so long it is really a non-issue. Which is why every 6 months are so you get scare stories about massive solar flares that are headed our way, and that it will disrupt satellites, radio and the grid - and then.... nothing. It does affect radio - that is the nature of radio waves. It can affect other spectrums - but it does not destroy electronics. If they get around to it, they talk about an incident in the late 60's where a solar flare melted a transformer, and caused a widespread outage, or some outages in the 70's. Those may have marginally had a solar flare origin, but the main culprit was that the protective relaying back then was analog, whose settings would drift, were not that accurate and that had very crude "selectivity" (protective zones). Those have been gone for decades and now have all hardened digital, with super selective zones, repeatability, no drift and tons more layers of protection - which is why we haven't had any of those types of outages since the early 80's. I also calculated the EMP effect from nuclear bombs of many types - I don't have those calcs handy any more, but what happens, is that if you want enough EMP from a nuclear bomb to take out a power grid, you would have to detonate it within about a 20 mile radius - which would take most of it out anyway from the blast and shock waves. Mostly they target detonation much further at altitude so that they spread the radius of fallout and other bad stuff - but then the EMP dies off rather quickly with distance and would not be strong enough to do any real damage to today's power grid. I cannot speak to home electronics or cars.

Well, technically, the reason why a nuke EMP is affective is because it's blown up in the higher atmosphere and causes the ions in the higher atmosphere to bombard us. So if you think there's gonna be fallout, Most people think that it's the nuclear bomb that causes a EMP But a nuclear Bomb, isn't the strongest EMP device.
@dn7783
@dn7783 5 ай бұрын
A nuclear weapon by itself, Doesn't crate a effective e m p, But when blown up in the higher atmosphere, it causes the higher Atmosphere Ions to get pushed down with the blast and moving them into the lower atmosphere. And there's no harm in radiation.

Well for me, I have given this EMP protection to anything in/around my house a hard thought for a long time. Too explain further,I am from Tokyo, Japan;the first I think about is from N.Korea, Kim-Jong is an unstable little man, and well he’s got nukes,he launch them constantly over Japanese airspace! The second most place i think of is China ,they have nukes and especially most recently they want to expand and compete with the USA, and well their government may not like Japan much.. Third, I still think of Russia, while Vladamir Putin doesn’t seem too give much thought to Japan, we are still an ally of USA and we are far closer than any US territory, and have US military stationed here, that could be seen as a threat, I know too well as I was JMSDF(Japanese Marine,in constant training with my Us Navy/US Marine Corps,counterparts for 28 years,before my retirement in 2015..I still think about many things even today,as I still serve my government, but more locally as director of emergency management (Like your FEMA, but on local/state level here in ,Kanagawa prefecture/state, Kawasaki city, just outside of Tokyo,Japan.) I use StarLink as a secondary system,it delivers 384-512 MB/PS Upload/96-128 MB/PS download almost anytime! Amazing service!

It would be interesting to hear you share some more details on the preparations you have made? Depending on who you listen to researching EMP protection might be a bit disheartening as some sources claims that the effect would be so great it would even burn the windings in car generators etc, basically no sensible way to protect against it unless you have systems completely air-gapped and shielded. I've gone in some middle way, got some basic surge protection for the house and individual surge protectors for some separate devices, but that would of corse still not protect from surges that are generated through wires in the devices themselves. Basically I have settled with the idea that all electronics that are "out in the air" will become lost, leaving what we have stored away in a faraday cage (some basics like a small foldable solar panel + charger, some com radios and a couple of other electronics).

If there was an EMP what would be left of the electrical grid? Additionally, what servers would still be accessible? It would be good to protect your equipment but for what? Interesting video and I will give this some additional thought but without the power grid why does it matter.

Also Ma Bell replaced their old copper Comm Lines with Fiber Optic Lines for EMP protection ! May also have to wrap my old cell phones in Aluminium Foil wrap. How do you protect your laptop computer ? tjl

A good example of a cheap Faraday Cage is a grounded microwave oven. - Load it up with anything you want to survive - completely disconnected from anything. After an EMP - basically NOTHING electronic will work - including your car - unless it is 1960's vintage. - It will take an unimaginable amount of time to replace everything with new electronics. Effects could be worse and far more widespread than a nuclear bomb other than at the center of detonation. - Sorry for the bad news...

Aluminum glue tape, at all the cables and doesn't has issues at radiations, same at the dish. it Boosting also. At every cable i use since earl 90s this aluminum tape saved me in power balance also some foil to connections , i have not error packages ,makes so i stable. NOT ON THE DISH, around it like give you(depends area) extended version of dish(doesn't work at cities) Or avoid with it at some scanned lock it will work like the 3rd version(is something i never tried) needs farther tests that method

Many concerns with EMP cuz let's say you can protect your house with a "Emp shield" product. A EMP would render satellites inert. Even a coronal mass ejection would do the same. If powerful enough the air would be charged to the point it might render every electronic useless. Infrastructure would be down and many things would out of reach right after.

Your channel is excellent I when working as an electronic engineer did design lightning protection EMP is way higher frequency and guess much higher current Even for lightning you need only point to earth as there are very high voltage drops across conductors due to to impedance (conductors have inductance) . Airplanes can be struck by lightning mid flight and suffer no consequences. Your multiple earth ideas clearly would not help a plan and most likely will not help your viewers. My guess is there would be a mil standard how to earth stuff to protect against EMP. Ups is really unlikely to protect against EMP. You will protection of the electronics. In the 1980s you could transorbs (a really powerful zener diode that can switch on real quick). There may be better devices now. The EMP is such a high frequency it will defeat most people's attempts at a Faraday cage to protect their equipment In fact EMP radiation will zap and destroy nearly all existing electronics by actually being received as a radio signal actually on the chip In the 1980s the Russian fighters used electrical valves (like you would find in a radio from the 1930s) as they would be able to handle EMP better. If there is an EMP we in a lot of trouble

EMP would take out electrical grid. Where will you get power to power your stuff? If you have solar deployed it would likely be damaged or destroyed by EMP. I plan to have a small solar system with LiFePO4 batteries that are not exposed outside ready to deploy is such a case. Enough to run router, 1 small desktop or laptop and some small fans chargers, etc. I have propane for winter heating as a backup. I will run everything on 12v/24v. I have boost/buck converters to adapt to whatever voltage 19v for laptops, etc. I live in the southeast it's hot here. Fans are very important.

I have a question. In the last storm we had here in Shingletown, there was a lightning strike near by and I lost all signal from Starlink. I wound up having to reboot my system to factory original settings to get back on line. Does lightning create an electromagnetic pulse? I think with the solar maximum building over the next few years, we might just need some form of hardening of our electrical systems. Especially now with computer equipment being produced with 1NM conductors.

All earth grounds need to be bonded so they are at the same potential, if not that lightning bolt will travel down the antenna ground, and also through your router, house etc.
@jcristina
@jcristina 5 ай бұрын
It’s my understanding that the charge would take the easiest route. As the pole is hit, the ground connected would take that charge into the ground. Left over charge could travel to the router of course. I may be wrong.

@@jcristina I'm not an electrical engineer, but from what I've heard from people smarter than me, is that the strike will take all paths to ground, most of it will take the easiest path but some will travel another path to ground. When the grounds are bonded it is less likely to take the longer path to ground. My understanding may be off, but bonding grounds is critical to reduce the chance of electrical damage.

That's all great advice but it's only as good as how protected the provider is. Yes you said satellites are protected to a degree and on top of that there are so many up there that the other hopefully could fill in the blanks. But even if the satellites are good what about the ground stations. How protected are they if they arent then all this is worthless unless like you said our pop is in Georgia and we in florida gets hit then might work

Question; If you put your Starlink router in a faraday cage and it's connected to the dish and your other router by cables, doesn't the surge just travel through the cables and still fry the router? My understanding it that any metallic connection running into a faraday cage will cause the cage to fail. It must be sealed and not connected to anything outside of the cage. Also, after an EMP, parents won't be driving to the schools to pick up their kids unless they are using a horse and buggy. An EMP will fry most electronics in todays cars. Hope you have a bicycle or a horse. Back to the early 1800's we go.

@@jcristina - sorry mate!.. the microwave comment was for the poster who stated microwaves were Faraday cages... its good to have these discussions, but the best wisdom to impart about EMP is to educate about what it actually is... once that's done, it becomes really obvious how it is nearly impossible to mitigate the effects of an intentionally destructive EMP pulse. Also remember that the likely speed with which a destructive EMP pulse propagates is typically far greater than the response time of most commercial defensive devices, and although the tech exists, it's really not that integrated into consumer devices.... at all.

Some people believe that just powering off a device will protect it. If its not connected to the wall, then it wont get hurt. Wrong. That works for lightning, not an EMP. Basically the electronics are just one big giant antenna. The EMP "wave" has all the current it needs. Just think of it this way... you know that "wireless phone charger" you have... Your phone is not plugged in, but its still getting power ... On a "really stupid dumbed down way", that wireless phone charger is a short range EMP generator... Not really, but the analogy is the same.

@RoySalisbury
@RoySalisbury 5 ай бұрын
Here is why I am not worried about an EMP... An EMP effects all electronics not properly protected. This will include the power grid and transformers. So if you had a UPS, it wont last long. Oh, but wait ... your UPS or power strips were not protected... So that backup power or surge protection ... dead. Your computer/phone needs an EMP shield as well or else whats the use of the starlink device still working (with no power BTW). And lets just say you protected everything from an EMP, and were running off a protected whole home USP so you have power. Guess what... bet the NAP's that starlink uses are not working anymore. Neither are the major internet backbones in/out of an effected area. In fact, the entire area is dead (internet, cellular, cable, wifi). Your best bet is an AM radio (if it was protected). So, EMP protection .. forget it. power surge/brownout protection... Thats worth getting. As is lightning protection on devices (normal UPS wont handle a lightning strike). So my suggestion, the money you spend on EMP protection ... spend it on food/water ... you will need it more after an EMP blast.

Hypothetically speaking if an EMP went off per your example (and yes I know it was just an example) and people would be picking up their kids? Not likely because in today's world most cars are operated by the same tech so they would cease to operate. So unless people can walk to the school and walk their kids back there definitely would be chaos. Just saying lol.
