Hey it's Richard here with Platinum Ponds & Lake Management at Platinumlakes.com and we are here at a pond and I wanted to show you exactly what a cypress tree looks like and how you keep these cypress trees alive. The cypress tree is planted on the side of our ponds they have beautiful knees that come up from the bottom of the ponds. I'll show you this knee coming up here, they actually use this knee in the water to breath. Because it is a swamp tree it needs oxygen. It sends out these knees all around the base of the tree trunk and allows them to breath. Of course they are very very popular in the south of the United States. Such as in Louisiana where we are here today. I wanted to show you how we keep these alive. This is one of the tastiest things in a pond for a beaver. You can see these little ruts that beavers make as they come out of the pond is the bark. So willow cypress would be a premier plant and here we have a cage made out of regular fencing. It goes around the base of the plant and this actually will provide some protection to keep the beaver away. We have seen beavers stand up over 3 to 4 feet tall and will naw on the top of the stumps.
Typically when we put these types of cages around it, this one it is about 10 to 12 inches across the base of this tree. This side you will actually see a smaller tree, this is where we start our saplings off . This is just used with regular 6 inches corrugated pipe not the 4 inches but the actual 6 inch. Then we just put a slit in the edge here so it will come apart and then basically slide it around the tree. As the seedlings start to pop up you have a protected base from beaver. That stands about 3 1/2 feet tall off the bottom of this pond. We have a beautiful pond here with a warf area that comes out. This is actually a stocking pond that we use to grow fish in prior to putting them into a large pond. Of course that is important we don't want our fingerlings to be eaten by the larger fish such as bass and such.
