Making and saving checklists are a great idea. That way when it becomes time to re stock the larder, you just pull the lists out and head to the store. You can change things on the lists as you find out what you use and what is not consumed. Looks like lots of fun. Have a good time putting it all away. Happy sailing.

A couple of recommendations for your tool bag. DeoxIT D100 - an electronic contact cleaner; get the small bottle with the dropper Fluid Film - a much better lubricant and anti-corrosion spray than WD-40; use on electrical contacts Silicon spray - great on rubber Lanolin grease - general lubrication and anti-corrosion; use on large (nut and bolt) electrical connections

I found that a kindle is the way to go for reading material. I can stock up on as many books as I want without taking up space or worrying about damp pages. They recharge same as a phone.
@RiggingDoctor6 жыл бұрын
Yeah a kindle definitely would have been more economical, but I wouldn't feel as comfortable having it out where waves could destroy it. The more technology on an ocean crossing, the more chances of corrosion and failure.

You can seal it in a heavy duty clear freezer bag or buy a waterproof pouch that is made just for that kind of thing.

I will be getting a boat in the future. I have been watching a lot of videos. One thing that I have not seen for provisioning is a food dehydrator. I think that would be a great tool to have for saving some of the fruits and veggies as well as making your own jerky for those times when cooking would not be practical.

Mason jars? Interesting. I would have thought your vacuum sealer to be the better bet given the weight and displacement trade off. I understand there is a plastic issue, but you can re-use non-meat packaging in gradually decreasing sizes for the cost of the clipped sealed top. Plus empties store flat, do not rattle and wont’t break when you drop them.
@RiggingDoctor6 жыл бұрын
Thankfully, we have yet to break any of the 144 (1 gross) jars we carry. The vacuum sealer needs 110 vAC to run, which would require us to crank on the generator each time we wanted to reseal something. The jars add weight, but we have them scattered throughout the boat and low in the hull. They make up a small part of the extra ton we took on in preparation to go cruising.
@jackpatteeuw92446 жыл бұрын
I use heavy duty 6 mil zipper lock bags. They store flat and are reusable. The only problem is you have to buy them online in large quantities so you need to figure out what is the best size before buying 500 of them !

I was wondering if a light coating of dielectric grease on the charging cables would prevent corrosion on the cable along with protecting the phone. Also the food safe lubricant used for the “O” rings in soft serve machines is perfect to lightly coat knives and any other kitchen equipment to prevent rust.

Great episode guys! I have a foodsaver but hadn't considered using it to repackage meat, great tip! With all those mason jars aboard do you have a canning pressure cooker to preserve meat and fish you catch? The DrakeParagon sailing channel recently had a great episode on canning salmon! Also, re book buying, think about doing some digital provisioning before your next crossing. The gutenberg.org download gives you 58,000 free ebooks with all the out of copyright classics including A room with a view btw :-) P.S. Kivix allows you to keep a copy of the medipedia offline or the whole wikipedia if you like! Don't forget music and movies too :-) For a good storage solution hardware wise, I'd mate a cheap low power fanless 12v router like the Linksys WRT AS1200 with a 4Tb external harddrive via the USB 3 port on the router for this express purpose. The whole setup can be done for 1/4th the cost of an iPhone :-D Keep up the good work, just subscribed and thumbed up. Paul.

Do you make rough meal plans (and ingredient lists) for breakfast, lunches, and dinners? Do you count up how many of each particular recipe you will cook to ensure you get enough of something? If not, how do you create the shopping list without meal plans or the count? Just curious how this is done when you can't just run to the store for something you forgot. @RiggingDoctor2 жыл бұрын
A variety of ways. We normally keep them in the fridge in their original cartons, but if we buy them in a country that doesn’t have egg cartons (Suriname and Cape Verde for example) we would put them in a plastic egg case and put that in the fridge. We turn them often and they tend to keep for about a month while out at sea.

Extra batteries for VHF and electronics that will use them. Flashlight bulbs and lenses? An Estwing Camper's axe, spare block and tackle, drawknife and spokeshave? Spare prescription glasses/contact lenses? A couple gallons of SPF 100 Sunscreen,lol. Machete? And some of that temporary tooth filling, if Herb don't have it in his Pack. I'm not understanding why your bilge pump is not automatic and you have to hear the prop shaft spinning in it to know your boat is half full of water.
@RiggingDoctor6 жыл бұрын
It’s ironically a safety thing. Imagine that you have a leak and the bulge pump empties it all the time. Each time you do a bilge check, the water level will be low. This means you won’t realize that there is a leak. If the pump fails, the bilge would fill and you would not expect it. I heard it between checks by chance. It almost made it a “very bad day”!
@Josef_R6 жыл бұрын
If the bilge pump is constantly running, you will hear it. If you can't hear it, you need an alarm on it. I'd rather have it doing it's job than my boat filling with water til the floorboards float off.
