Will the tree not succum to die-back Disease? It is observed,in the absence of leaves at growth ring,if a cut is made the branches are dying. Weexperience with Mango plants in my farm in south India. Nice watching the video,the tree will grow to manageable height and good shape. Hope to see the video of this tree with good canopy. Thank you,Chris.

Thanks! I'm glad it was helpful. Because there are so many different circumstances, we're making many pruning videos. It's just a seasonal thing, so don't think we've turned into a pruning channel.... In a couple weeks, we'll be on to other projects

Chris, I'm a new subscriber to your YT videos and I am so thankful for the knowledge and expertise you share with your followers. I am from Phoenix, Arizona and I am transforming my yard into a 'tropical food forest' I have 6 mangoes, 2 Jamaican cherry, 1 Barbados cherry, guava, moringas, jujube, pomegranate to name a few. I recently purchase a mango grafted mango from a local tropical nursery here, and the tree was labeled 'bullocks heart'. I tried looking for info regarding this variety but end up with nothing. Have you heard about a bullocks heart mango? Also, I have a Marlys mango and was thrilled when you interviewed Marlys herself, and how the mango came to be. Thank you for the inspiration.
@TrulyTropical7 жыл бұрын
Sounds great! You have lots of fun fruit trees... I hope they give you lots of great fruit! All I know about Bullock's Heart is that it's from Egypt. Sorry I don't have any other information, but I don't grow it.

My Coconut Cream mango tree began branching at around 5 ft tall. It has four branches. Should I cut it back down to 3 or 4 feet tall and let it begin sending out new branches from lower? Is it ok to do this now (Sept 16, 2021)?

Does mango tree need open canopy?

It doesn't need it, but more sunshine and air circulation are good things

Great videos. I have a question, I know people graft trees at trunks for a certain variety tree but why is grafting done on the branches?
@TrulyTropical7 жыл бұрын
I think it makes a better tree and is less stressful for the tree, but I know that in certain parts of the world grafting directly into a stumped tree is common.

Hi Chris! I have two mango trees 2 years old. One is a Glenn and the other is a Kent. Neither one fruited this year but they both grew like crazy. I am pretty sure I over irrigated them last winter. All summer they have had gray leaf tips. Do you know what causes that? How much should I trim them? Thank you in advance.
@TrulyTropical7 жыл бұрын
Too much water decreases the chances of fruit developing. Try to cap off irrigation in the area where your mangos are growing. I'm guessing the leaf-tip issue is a nutrient deficiency. Trimming... I would at least prune every branch when it's 12-14 inches long. If you want to try to keep your trees small, tip the branches when they're very young and at least a couple times each year

Very useful video, was actually waiting for such demos. We get lot of rain in our place. Do you suggest any treatment to the cut ends of the branches?
@TrulyTropical7 жыл бұрын
We don't treat cut ends with anything. All the research that I've heard says different products that supposedly help the tree heal are a waste of money
@MadhuReddy-js2nb6 жыл бұрын
We usually put a small paste of Neem leaves and fresh dung if the cuts are very severe.

I want to prune my old mango trees , which month is suitable and also want to try grafting , again tell me season best for it Thanks in advance
@TrulyTropical7 жыл бұрын
Old mango trees take a while before new sprouts form. I would probably cut them back in February or March. That way you would have many good months to graft after new growth has emerged. Cutting back part of the tree each year is easier on the tree, but sometimes it's necessary to do the whole tree at the same time.
@HungNguyen-pi5vd7 жыл бұрын
I think it would have been a better idea to take that high graft and graft it to a lower branch. You basically cut it back to the graft point anyway.
@TrulyTropical7 жыл бұрын
The grafted variety is 'Glenn' ...which can get quite leggy if not encouraged to branch. In this circumstance, I think this small piece of 'Glenn' will branch out very nicely. There's always lots of ways to approach situation like this one. Hardly ever is there only one correct solution.
